Pour some ‘Best wee country’ syrup down your throat

Whatever former Scotland manager Craig Levein tells the media about referees’ behaviour will not come as news to you.  As Dundee United boss in 2008 he faced Rangers and was so incensed by the behaviour of referee, Mike McCurry, his reaction cost him a £5k SFA fine.

This is Scotland, it is not news, it is not even noteworthy.  The reaction from sections of the media and referees since a Celtic goal on Thursday tells you all you need to know.  Let them pour some more ‘Best wee country’ syrup down your throat while they are at it.  My only flag is green and white.

Anyone can Google. What do you know about them that makes you say they’re “an ambitious far sighted Board?”

Where did you find their salary figures? Someone on here said their last accounts had Van der Saar being paid €2m, which is more than PL got paid last year according to our accounts

We did I thought I recognised your moniker!

Our CSC was named Mount Carmel, went defunct early 1980’s. Never recovered from a major lost running bus to Berwick Rangers among others. No need to visit the fair scheme now , as alas, all known folk now passed away. But that’s time for you.

  3. Been watching those ‘Hunting for the Essex Lorry Killers’ and ‘The Detectives’ TV shows. Heartbreaking tragedy and hurt for all the 39 victims and their families as well as for the polis wading thru societies’ dross; seeing the worse of humanity is shown to take it tolls on investigators as well as the surviving families. Horrible job, desperately trying to bring justice on immoral crims – and give peace to all the desperate grieving relatives.

IMO, totally counters the easy trope that every situation is made worse when the coppers turn up.

  4. Watching CL highlights. Sporting keeper doing a Barkas, especially the penalty – seemed to stop his dive

That’s a shame. I was Stewarton so went to the games on the train with mates from Hurlford in the mid 80s. In Glasgow after that. Been in Mt Carmel church a few times in last few years with my parents. The scheme hasn’t changed that much. Good memories

Anyone can Google. Check Lawwell’s total remuneration, including bonuses, over the years, all while downsizing us since 2003. A penny pinching bean counter, recruited from the National Coal Board, where his tenure coincided with thousands losing their jobs.

Odd that you become argumentative if there is the slightest whiff of criticism of our mendacious, sleekit and evasive Board members.

  13. An Tearmann, A Celtic State of Mind’s double dunt weekend fundraising brings some amount of cash getting support from other Celtic podcasts.

I only heard the etims podcast on Sunday night which was entertaining.

Our team is winning games with good performances then our performance was top notch on Sunday with our biggest win in the league for a while.

Bernard Higgins is persona non gratis . I know someone who was lifted at one of our games in late 2017. He’s been to court three times , each time the case has been suspended. He is still waiting to hear if his case will be heard the fourth time he goes to court.

  14. Iniquitous

“If achievement exactly equated to resources, we would not be ousted regularly by the likes of Midtjylland, Ferencvaros, Cluj, etc.”

    —————————————————-

To be precise , we are NOT ousted regularly by any one of those teams but have been beaten by a variant team drawn from a league with even smaller resources than ours, although it is only marginal in the case of Danish teams.

Overall we tend to beat a Fernecvaros or a Cluj or Midjtylland more often than they beat us. But even when we beat one or two of them in a 3 round or 4 round process of qualifying the risk of losing out increases with each passing round and we remember the names and finances of the “minnow”/ “pub team” that beat us and forget all the ones we beat because we were expected to beat them and get no credit for them. Over the past 20 years, we have overall a better European record than the vast majority of “minnow” clubs. Only the likes of Basel and RB Salzburg have a better record and Dinamo Zagreb/Copenhagen are getting close to a comparable one, though stillinferior to ours.

The Battered Bunnet gave the odds on this a while back so I am paraphrasing the figures here.

In a first round qualifying, we may be 80:20 or 70:30 favourites to win and in the second round we may be 70:30 or 60:40 to win but the odds of winning both ties veer towards 50:50 as you have two chances to lose. By the time you are playing a 4th round of qualifying, you will be odds against to have qualified, even though you have only one round to go against a relatively comparable opponent.

So, I am afraid in this environment, the possibility of getting knocked out at some stage by a team you regard as inferior is quite high and it is intended to be so. The Champions Route qualifiers who grace the CL Group stages are there to be 4th seed cannon fodder and their presence is ever more resented by those who are richer clubs, the group who are 5th to 12th in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France who would alll fancy their chances of beating Celtic, if allowed and can buy our best players easily to increase their chances.

Unless this structure changes we are doomed to ever decreasing odds.

Of course we can buy earlier and buy bigger and we’ll scrape a higher percentage of the marginal encounters but there is no amount of expenditure that can square the circle and even get us near tier two where the Ajax and Benfica and Porto teams are to be found. Even a golden generation , as Belgium have enjoyed, has done very little for the qualiications and results of Anderlecht and Bruges, as they can only afford the scraps of their best players, the ones not yet spotted by the big leagues or the ones who have gone there and failed.

Of course, I feel we can do better and qualifying from a CL Group for a 4th time is not beyond us but it is much harder than many of us care to admit, despite the evidence.

I believe that TV money and Big League hegemony condemns us to an also ran space in football.

You and many other attribute this same outcome to a lack of ambition and a wilfull commitment to buying bad players or good ones too late.

I cannot see any circumstances in which your hypothesis can be put to the test because no one is going to pour that sort of money into a big fish in a peripheral league because the risks far outweigh the potential gains.

I think good development coaches like Strachan (yes! that Strachan), Rodgers and Postecoglou can improve us and we can, of course, do better but even they cannot stop the player predation or the coach predation. If we are successful, we get raided and stripped of our best and get the chance to go again on a hazardous re-build where even big money signings (Ajeti, Barkas) are no guarantee of success

  15. SFTB

“To be precise , we are NOT ousted regularly by any one of those teams but have been beaten by a variant team drawn from a league with even smaller resources than ours, although it is only marginal in the case of Danish teams.”

I’m sorry, SFTB, but to me this is a distinction without a difference. You like precision, an admirable trait, so perhaps I should have qualified my statement by a time element, such as “in the recent past” or “in the past few years, we have been ousted from the CL by various teams with fewer resources.”

I have no argument with the statement on coaches ( I thought Strachan did wonderfully well ) but have difficulty accepting that we are perpetually condemned to ‘also ran’ status. This is redolent of Bankier’s AGM response, which to my mind was immensely discouraging. If we have no hope, what is the point of competing?

If we are well managed, well coached, professionally run, using the best training practices, data analytics, sports science, prepare early, and hire someone smart enough NOT to acquire the likes of Ajeti ( even I vigorously opposed that ), I think we can do a hell of a lot better in the CL than in the recent past. Now of course, we are never going to win it, but the Man City team of today are not light years better than the team we drew 3-3 with at Celtic Park. Who would not strive to bring these days back?

Otherwise, we might as well just pack our tents and go home.

Off to my scratcher. Good night.😊

An interesting and erudite post. I agree with the gist, reasoning and sheer common sense of what you write. Regular progress and success in Europe is a conundrum that is nye on impossible to solve from our domestic base. If we still had the likes Forster, Frimpong, Boyatta, Van Dyck, Tierney, Armstrong, Christie, Wanyama Dembele & Eduard, we would be up there challenging. However top players come and go at different times and we need to sell to get by – there is no easy, or, quick, fix.

Our ambition, reach and grasp are reduced as the financial threshhold into the top tiers gets ratcheted-up year on year.

    —-

An independent SNPcult Scotland with a desperation to join the EU would be in the vanguard to wipe out Catholicism. In the fallout, bankruptcy and swingeing cuts post Indy, Catholic education would be non-existant well within a decade and our 15% would dribble away and disperse in the aftermath. We have more ‘friends’ in the England than the total population of Scotland, many would find work, homes and a future there.

A reminder for those who would argue the contrary. Look how the SNP have turned the Catholic/Irish/Celtic vote in their favour over the last fifteen years – various polls put the percentage at 60%(350k)- the catalyst to SNP domination in local, Holyrood & Westminster elections in that period. The SNPcult has promoted Ulster-like politics accentuating the terms of Unionist & Nationalist to con & portray a Northern Ireland-type meaning.

The corner has been reached and is in the process of being turned.

  19. SFtBs @ 1:20 AM,

With all due respect TBB got those odds wrong.

He failed to take into account the seeding and Co-eff of Celtic and the weighting the “Champions Route” afforded.

Celtic were among the favourites to qualify from the “Champions Route” and more than one favourite could qualify.

This weighting was not put into TBB’s odds.

When Rangers died and the “Champions Route” was introduced some ten years back I argued if we invested in the team we would qualify regularly and were capable of getting Tier 3 UCL status.

In the Brendan Rodgers era we invested in the team, football management and support staff.

We used money we already had, money generated by previous European campaigns and player sales.

Money that was not made available to Lenny or Ronny.

We then qualified for the UCL proper and in a couple of seasons gained co-eff points and seeding to make us a UCL tier three Club.

    Exactly as predicted.

The third season of BR’s tenure seen civil war between the Board and Football Department and a lack of re-investment in the team.

We failed narrowly to get UCL qualification.

Since then Newco Rangers, a financial basket case has taken over as the top seeded Scottish European contenders.

Although I didn’t agree with the argument put forward by the likes of the Board, TBB and yourself at the time in 2017 it may have had merit.

With hindsight it had no merit whatsoever and it was proven to have no merit. So your argument must be consigned to the dustbin where it belongs.

Of course as things stand we are in a different situation.

We have a domestic challenge and we have been punching way below our weight in Europe.

A well run Celtic Football Club has every chance of being a top twenty European Club.

Brendan Rodgers proved what can be achieved, Ajax have proven what can be achieved.

We now have a manager who is ambitious, capable, optimistic and most importantly takes responsibility.

Something sadly lacking in previous seasons.

If he’s backed and of course that is a huge “IF” as things stand. We can again achieve UCL status.

    We’ll see

    Hail Hail

  20. JHB @ 4:26 AM,

Where is this love of Roman Catholicism in England?

    The Anglicans run England.

They took over the Catholic Churches and destroyed many of the Abbeys, monasteries and convents.

Oliver Cromwell was no lover of Catholics, he is an English hero and his Statue has pride of place outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

You seem to know very little about a lot.

You really need to do your homework.

What about those who sing Roaming ?

    ###

Roamin in the gloamin is a relict of an earlier age when Catholics in Scotland, and by extension Celtic fans, were a marginalised and despised minority, who suffered life long structural and cultural discrimination. It’s defiant and assertive in the face of that adversity, it threatens no one and, crucially, It punches up not down.

If it’s offensive to those who would prefer to pretend ignorance of that history and context then all the better.

  31. Timmy 7 Noted.

You cite proof in that he mentions 15% Roman Catholic in posts.

Some Celtic supporters sing how good it is to be a Roman Catholic

    The link is obvious.

So I ask again :- Are those Celtic supporters who indulge singing such songs Racists or Sectarian. ?

My view is that none of them are, although perhaps misguided. What do you think. ?
