Power behind the throne

303

Agreeing on important topics, like wages, seems a straightforward business for some. You wonder if agreeing compensation is more of a challenge.

Celtic and confirmed prime target Brendan Rodgers have lots to discuss, not least who will make it into his backroom team.  Chris Davies was considered the power behind the throne when they were both I’m Glasgow before.

Chris was the technician, Brendan’s main sounding board and tactical resource. At 38, after 13 years as a Rodgers protégé, he will have options of a manager’s of his own.  I respect Chris greatly but wonder if Brendan needs a fresh pair of eyes after do many years.

One man’s food another mans poison

He has steered Celtic to a dominant position in Scotland

We have all celebrated success and PL contributed to that

So for me, I want him on board but I also want him positive about BR

  2. Genuine question.

You must have some major problems if you associate Peter lawwells CEO stewardship and now chairpersonage as being comparable to the old family of owners.

    Delusional.

  3. Adidas Friday by this time tomorrow the “White Smoke “will have disappeared hopefully guys.

He came home to lead the green and white with his own choices of back team and clubs guarantees.

This is a far more aggressive progressive Celtic now.

I just listened to Paul67 on Spiers podcast along with Harry Brady.

They discussed the recycled build up play Rodgers used first time round.

It was a hard watch towards the end of his first tenure, alright.

Mark II could be a similar hard watch after the delights of Angeball.

  8. When CQN was in its infancy, it provided something that was badly missing from the MSM, thoughtful articles about Celtic from a Celtic perspective. “Not Lazy Journalism” was the tag line and remains so to this day.

We all know Paul is on good terms with PL. That occasionally allows him access to exclusives and often allows him to give us an insight into what was and is really going on.

But this week he has become what he set out to replace. He is pushing one man’s agenda just like the Murray succulent lamb stenographers that we laughed at. He has told us that BR was not getting the gig, that he was a sideshow, a distraction, someone not suited to the role. Today he is suggesting that Davies is the main man, that BR is just the front fluff.

There can be little doubt that Paul does not want the return of BR. He said he could have published a piece that would all buy have torpedoed that possibility. That points to a willingness to serve one man’s agenda no matter what the cost to the club and the wishes of majority shareholder DD. The fact he didn’t push the nuclear button suggests either he or the chairman realised the folly of it. Or perhaps they are keeping that ammo for a future score-settling battle?

  9. Thank as always Paul for giving us this forum to discuss all things Celtic.

Sounds like there has been some differing opinions on the Board as to the best candidate for the managers role, and that DD is putting his foot down. I was one of the ones who thought Ange would not leave this Summer, but we move on and I think Brendan is a magnificent choice. Positive moves in the transfer market and a few good results and all past behaviours will be forgotten. Let’s get it done!

I was at a game between Celtic and St Mirren (Hospitality) and we had just sign big Elliott but he played with the reserves that day.

After the game we were in the lounge at Love Street and he came in as I think he looked after the reserves at that time.

One of my mates asked him how Elliott played and he said he’s “Sh**e, Sh**e, Sh**e”. Could spot a player eh ?

  12. When was Paul’s last “exclusive”?

I’ve always found most if his articles to be pretty vague, always careful not to commit one way or the other.

Would that be J McCall’s hospitality?

As I recall, Paul Elliot’s first season at Celtic was a bit of a nightmare. He really struggled and the support didn’t take to him at all. Following season he was outstanding and never looked back.

So McQueen might have had a point.

  18. Tit for tat perhaps? BR wants JK to stay thinking Davies is going to Swansea and Ange, pissed off he can’t get JK, nicks Davies. It’s like the NBA draft. Or just made up rubbish 😄

  19. The returnof weeron on

Some silly talk going on here about Chris Davies from both Paul and the gang of moaners that are on his case…

Paul67, it was unfair to call CD ‘the brains…’

In modern football, there are lots of brains in gear. CD’s was one of many.

That said, the rest of you are just being silly. CD was a BIG asset to BR and Celtic.

    Coexisting truths….

Mark II could be a similar hard watch after the delights of Angeball.

    ————————

Angeball was slowing down, too. Scottish teams had figured it out. Given another half season, we would have been in the same spot as we were with BR.

Fundamentalist coaches have a short shelf life. The best ones know how to reinvent themselves every 2 years.

  22. THE RETURNOF WEERON @ 4:55 PM,

The lead is a load of nonsense.

Small minded West of Scotland narrow mindedness, because folk don’t get there own way.

My advice to the City Group Clan

    It’s life – suck it up…

    Hail Hail

  23. I dont subscribe to the “Angeball was slowing down” theory or that the huns were getting closer.

the dead rubbers games were just that.

and we scored more goals in the second season, had more win, and had our 3rd best ever goals tally.

our shots to goals ratio was near same through out the season.

i hate to say it, ange ball will succeed at spurs, and i fear Callum and or Reo going there as they would lead the transition.

For CAL, at the end of the rodgers time, did he not comment around we will get the job done for the gaffer that wants to be here ? was there any bad blood with Brendan like Keiran had ?

my other fear, Brendan mark 2 doesnt get the whirlwind start. and the critics begin. probably on the japan tour

  24. So Rodgers’ football was a hard watch. Davies was the brains. His recruitment and squad management was lacking. And Brendan was not a team player.

God only knows what P67 would have to say had Brendan not won every trophy he ever entered in Scotland…

  25. i hate to say it, ange ball will succeed at spurs

    We’ll see.

For my money, Spurs will ship some tankings. That level of naivety will get punished in England as it was with us in europe.

  26. Quick summary of CQN this pm then:

Ange good, Brendan bad, Davies better & Lawell the best.

  28. the long wait is over on

    Tick tock

Oddschecker has BR as anywhere between 7/1 and 20/1 on to be appointed. Can’t see them being that far wrong but , as we know from past experience, there’s many a slip…

My view on BR seems similar to most here. Disappointed to say the least about how he treated us last time around but , for everyone else except the fans, CFC is a business and head has always to rule over heart.

I’ll welcome the appointment even if I have some reservations about the man himself.

He’s here – hopefully – to do a job he has demonstrated he can do very well, not marry one of my daughters.

I’d like to see it over the line now so we can start planning rather be in a limbo entirely of Ange’s making.
