Pragmatic expectations and serial divorcees

1500

I spoke to a serial divorcee some years ago and he suggested that after one bad marriage, you’re more likely to plunge headfirst into another, then another, than your average person, despite all the warning signs.

He was driven by a need to put things right in his life.  Regretful of lost time, he wanted to get on with finding a secure, lasting, future relationship.

Parma were a tiny club for most of their existence, occupying the fourth tier of Italian football, but they rose inextricably to become one of the top clubs in Europe.  When Rangers knocked them out of the Champions League qualifiers in the 90s, they were sixth top seed in the Uefa rankings.  When the money dried up and insolvency grabbed them a few years ago it must have been hard to accept their place – a club with little substance going for it, but with fans expecting glory.

News this week that after liquidation a newco Parma would kick off at the bottom tier of the professional game in Italy is a morality tale.  Just as my pal, the divorcee, was compelled to plunge into a ‘lasting and successful’ relationship at the first opportunity, few people who pick up the pieces of insolvent football clubs seem to be blessed with pragmatic expectations.  A second, even more damaging liquidation, haunts in the shadows.

  4. As much as I agree lawell and board have let us down in transfer market on important occasions I think they should be given a chance now with ronnie… Last summer was poor and their was panic loan signings after small protests outside paradise.

I’m hoping that was kick up arse they needed, we got GMS and SA , boyota could be great signing .

Let’s see what the nxt week brings, I don’t think we will bring anyone else in before least 2nd leg of the qualifier.

The standard of player we could afford/attract will change quite a bit between buying now or waiting to see if we get into group stage.. That is a tough gamble.

  5. Much of Parma’s success was due to the funding by local company Parmalat. Parmalat eventually went bankrupt with debts of £9billion and their founder was jailed for fraud. I can’t think of any other club being bankrolled by a financial basket case tho.

  6. Parma have nothing to fear from administratione and liquidatione whichever way you slice it.

What we failed to do in 2003 was sell players who had reached their peak with us. There were large offers for Bobo and Agathe. Two positions that could have been improved with the income.

We compounded that by putting Bobo on his 28k a week and suffered for the remaining years.

We have failed to recruit a striker for over 10 years worthy of playing for Celtic. The money wasted on several misfits and trials is a scandal. Celtic should be looking at heads on sticks but they keep going back to the same folk for advice.

I partly blame the lack of a golden thread of strikers on the lack of flexibility to break up the Seville team. The two players I mentioned could have been sold with any one of umpteen successful strikers brought in. The Right Back and centre half positions could have been filled as they are now with bosman or low value high quality potential.

  19. From previous on Kodi (no its not a new 30 goals guaranteed a season scorer)

    Paul67

On the threat of streaming via KODI I downloaded the software to my lap top last night to check it out.

I’d compare it’s state after downloading and installing as having opened a flat pack of a furniture item with no instructions.

However a few Googles led me to a number of You Tube tutorials that were very helpful, although I had the tutorial showing on my phone and Kodi screen up on my lap top to make it easier to follow the tutorial and apply the instructions (with lots of stops and rewinds.)

End result was access to a number of recent movies with the learning gathered from putting the flat pack together.

On the threat to Sky what I would say is that if ex pats in Spain were paying Sky in the past, then Sky moving their satellite has forced ex pats in Spain to go Android and as a result of messing around last night with Kodi I have a better idea of what lies within the Android boxes in software terms.

The cost is way below what Sky charge with lots of choice.

I had fears about the cable infrastructure in Spain being able to handle the video traffic, broadband being delivered over the existing wired telephone cables, but already fibre glass optic cabling is being installed in the area and Spain is likely to move mainly to IPTV from to air broadcasting.

It will take a while for the mindset in the UK to move over but it will happen as the to air dinasours die out and Kodi or its counterparts is delivered pre built.

The worry I would have is for Celtic TV if it becomes even easier to watch for free. Why would Celtic keep such an operation going if it’s not making money?

The match going support would be subsidising those who watch for free and the message has to be there is no free lunch.

Somehow the club have to find a way to live in a world that hopefully is going back to the days when size was dictated by the numbers attending and not by the league they were playing in.

To air broadcasting has encouraged the latter, individual choice to watch and pay to watch only our own club by IPTV could be the game changer.

Technically is there any way to carry a code in the stream being pumped out by Celtic that requires a software decoder at the recipient’s end to verify the viewer has paid to watch that is so embedded it cannot be removed by an onward pirate streamer?

    Syd

Should have factored wages into the discussion.

BTW I took a look at the standings for the ‘Golden Shoe’ there, per: http://www.eurotopfoot.com/gb/soulierdor.php3

Usual suspects n the top 30, running from Ronaldo on 48, down to Suarez on 16 (although he missed the first 6 games).

Beric at Vienna is the standout. 22 years old, loads of goals.

The Portuguese have a number of runners, dunno if that’s because their forwards are great, or their defences are poor.

Other than that, ‘elite centre forward’ means 20 goals a year in Germany, England, Spain or Italy.

The rest of the world’s striker’s are lucky to nab more than 10 in a season it seems, and the best of them are outwith our price and wage range.

A fit Leigh Griffiths running at 0.6 goals per game for Celtic (as he did in the league last season) would be in the top 30 list.

I really don’t know where to go with that, but thought it worth sharing.

Hooper not worthy to be “A Celtic striker”87 goals in 3 seasons!!!!!!!!!!!.Apart from KOK,he is up there with anyone in the last 20-30 years.

I agree with your views on signing strikers.Has been abysmal apart from Hooper.I know its not easy, but we should have done much better.I think its a position you have to pay a premium for.We dont seem keen to break the structure, seems a lot of fans dont either, but in my opinion,if we keep operating in the price range we are, then many more flops will follow.
