Pragmatic expectations and serial divorcees

1500

I spoke to a serial divorcee some years ago and he suggested that after one bad marriage, you’re more likely to plunge headfirst into another, then another, than your average person, despite all the warning signs.

He was driven by a need to put things right in his life.  Regretful of lost time, he wanted to get on with finding a secure, lasting, future relationship.

Parma were a tiny club for most of their existence, occupying the fourth tier of Italian football, but they rose inextricably to become one of the top clubs in Europe.  When Rangers knocked them out of the Champions League qualifiers in the 90s, they were sixth top seed in the Uefa rankings.  When the money dried up and insolvency grabbed them a few years ago it must have been hard to accept their place – a club with little substance going for it, but with fans expecting glory.

News this week that after liquidation a newco Parma would kick off at the bottom tier of the professional game in Italy is a morality tale.  Just as my pal, the divorcee, was compelled to plunge into a ‘lasting and successful’ relationship at the first opportunity, few people who pick up the pieces of insolvent football clubs seem to be blessed with pragmatic expectations.  A second, even more damaging liquidation, haunts in the shadows.

  1. Serie D will be the most competitive league in Italy and Parma will make new friends on their journey back to where they belong, or something like that.

Wee story. On the last hole me and my mate were all Square against the two huns,I hit a pearler of a chip and landed 3 feet from the pin to par,and win the hole.Walking up,I kept saying to my mate”I hate these “Fritza”shots.I putted out,and as we were shaking hands,he said”WTF is a Fritza ball.Straight in with two feet.I burst out with”Fritza Grand Old Team”To his credit,he thought it was brilliant,I know this because he called me “Big Fenian Bassa”as he was laughing. He never lived it down.We called him that from then on.

    Turkey bhoy,

I stepped back before I posted and thought about Hooper and wee McDonald but neither ever really satisfied me as a proper leading man. I believe it was always our intention to get a better striker in while Hooper was here as the coaching staff thought we could do better.

Hooper second to Henrik since Henrik left but by some considerable distance. We really must look for a striker worthy of the type of praise reserved for our best. Henrik, McAvennie, Nicholas, McClair.

I’m hoping the gap between the 80s and 90s find of Henrik is repeated in this calendar year and we unearth a new gem worthy of turning games with one of brilliance

  5. The Dubliner did indeed have some great Irish turns on.Great times there.Massive seating area outside.

    Ah well.

Slow lane, occasional bright spots and highlights and regular visits to YouTube to remind me of the days when putting a team worthy of the support into those jerseys was the prime purpose of the club.

Who knows,a return to days like those might see an upturn in fortunes. Regular CL nights, people excited by Celtic-even by the prospect of seeing Celtic.

Discussing the WOW moments wi yer pals in the pub afterwards. For days afterwards, btw.

And buying a season ticket because it was a ticket to Paradise and pleasure. Not a shot in the dark at hope over experience done through the ‘brand loyalty’ that the board take for granted.

That’s worked well as season tickets sales decline, hasn’t it? Usage of season tickets decline still further, depriving us of matchday income, future supporters, and atmosphere at the ground.

Aye,all rosy here. Move on. (Or we’ll get our pals in Focus to do it for us)

  10. MO’N tried to bring in Kilmarnock right-back, Peter Canero to cover/replace Agathe….Killie wanted £250,000…Celtic board refused to back the manager….just like they refused to back him when, when he tried to bring in Motherwell’s James McFadden on loan.

Celtic have brought in a few strikers over recent seasons but….for some reason these strikers are branded as useless?

How about….instead of looking at the ‘black & white’ perspective….how about, looking at it from another angle….where I’m coming from with this….I remember when the ‘dug’ used to run onto the pitch from the Jungle and it would be serenaded with chants of – “John Grieg” – and, the Celtic played in such a style that fans would say – “….ye could play the ‘dug’ up front and it would score a barrow load.” – what happened to those days?

I still can’t understand ‘how’ a striker is expected to make the grade….if, he disny get chances?

Maybe one of the ‘conceited’ posters with, Andy Roxburgh-Craig Brown types of wee lists with the amount of goals-assissts-press-ups-sit-ups-bench-presses-etc…blah, blah can come on and explain ‘how-why’ if, a striker disny get chances he’s a failure?

Celtic have brought a lot of strikers over the recent period but….for me…’thats’ not the issue…the issue for me is….these strikers are being mis-managed because they are playing in teams that ‘dont’ create enough chances.

    Anyway….oot. YNWA.

In the most part I would be in your camp.

Last season we bought a prolific striker in Stefan Scepovic, scored for fun in Spain, aye it was the 2nd div, but a few cuts above the spl imo, maybes he will do the biz this season, who knows.

It’s a problem, take Finboggason, the blog was screaming for him to be signed, he went to Spain and bombed.

I accept that the scouts and Pedro have wasted many millions on pish strikers, but they were following their looking for the nugget policy, I think it may have changed slightly with Ronny, I hope so.

I agree with TBB, the Griff will score for fun in the spl, europe, give the chances he will as well, it’s what he does, he scores goals.

I reckon an top quality middy is what we need more than a run of the mill striker, someone who makes the killer pass, someone who sees the runs the strikers make, someone who anticipates that the striker will make the runs and releases the ball a split second before he does, this is how we will score goals imo.

“How much do you think a player that would increase chances of qualifying would cost over a 3 year contract?” Auldheid earlier.

I wish everyone who wants us to sign a striker would consider Auldheid`s question before so doing.

Maybe I am missing something (genuinely) but I only see problems in going down the road of big spend that so many see as the answer to almost guaranteed CL group stage qualification.

    1) Name the player (s) fit for purpose;

    2) How much would he cost?

    3) What would be his wages?

    4) How would that affect our current players?

    5) Would we be able to attract the necessary quality?

    6) What if we still failed to qualify?

    7) How likely is it that he would have the desired effect?

    8) Who would he replace?

I am sure there are other factors and I understand the desire for success but at all costs?

I am very happy with Celtic and with the current squad and Management. I believe that we can qualify with what we have already and I will certainly enjoy watching my team attempting to do just that. Celtic brings me joy 0:-). It is good to be a supporter.

There have been suggestions on here over the years who have gone on to be successful. The response is that -they might not have been so successful wi Celtic,it proves nothing.

Those we didn’t sign who bombed at their next club though are proof that the club is following the right philosophy.

It is very, very ,very, very hot at this time of year.

It was a case of a/c flat to a/c car to a/c hotel.

We took the ferry from the Marina to the Creek, costs 50 dirhams and takes ~ 90 minutes. It was a bit cooler in the breeze and it gives you a chance to see how the whole place fits together.

The creek is the original small fishing harbour, you can go to the spice market and haggle away to your heart’s content for saffron, cinnamon and frankincense.

There is no shortage of good places to eat; in cooler weather the Walk at the beach would be very pleasant. The hotels do a ‘brunch ‘ on a Saturday, buy a ticket and you can eat [and drink ] as much as you like..

..BUT is still Ramadan just now so things are very much curtailed!

What is the point in us trying to qualify for the CL every season? UEFA, the Big 5 Leagues and TV Companies have completely ruined any possibility of a club in our situation from competing successfully in the group stages never mind the latter stages.

The whole competition, through the abhorrent coefficient ranking system has been manipulated to such an extent by these entities that it is simply depressing to think the club we love see entry to it as some kind of victory akin to actually winning the tournament.

Our club has the world stature to be competing in the latter stages of the CL on a regular basis but has been hindered from doing so due to UEFA’s discriminatory system, designed for one purpose only. Money. Which, sadly, will continue unabated until challenged.

Celtic and teams such as ourselves are and will be permanently handicapped in Europe’s premier competition until this is challenged either by pressure from teams outwith the Big 5 or a court case on the grounds of unfair competition rules. A pipe dream in the current climate.

Which begs the question. Why do we get excited for the CL when we will never have any serious hope of winning it?

    I have no idea,mate.

I think we should consider the option of dividing the responsibility in our scouting much as we do in our coaching.

    Defence coaches/scouts for defenders,forward coaches/scouts for forwards.

    Etc.

Just caught the Soccernomics author in Talksport.

Depressing listening for Scottish football and Celtic. The bubble ain’t gonna bust according to him.

Clubs should break even but rich sugar daddies should be able to put non football money into the game. ( How do we know where that money comes from?).

He favours dispensing with FFP. Looks like because clubs don’t “die” but live on even if impoverished because they keep a core support then it’s ok to operate on that basis.

He should talk to supporters of clubs who have gone bust and come back phoenix fashion. I wonder if they would agree with him.

    Depressing.

I don’t discount Scepovic, and I’ve got some time for him, but he didn’t convince the manager when he got time on the park.

He and Guidetti got equal game time early on, and Scepovic didn’t show up strongly enough.

By January, Griffiths was getting the nod ahead of him.

If he’s going to do anything at Celtic, now’s the very time.
