Pragmatic expectations and serial divorcees

1500

I spoke to a serial divorcee some years ago and he suggested that after one bad marriage, you’re more likely to plunge headfirst into another, then another, than your average person, despite all the warning signs.

He was driven by a need to put things right in his life.  Regretful of lost time, he wanted to get on with finding a secure, lasting, future relationship.

Parma were a tiny club for most of their existence, occupying the fourth tier of Italian football, but they rose inextricably to become one of the top clubs in Europe.  When Rangers knocked them out of the Champions League qualifiers in the 90s, they were sixth top seed in the Uefa rankings.  When the money dried up and insolvency grabbed them a few years ago it must have been hard to accept their place – a club with little substance going for it, but with fans expecting glory.

News this week that after liquidation a newco Parma would kick off at the bottom tier of the professional game in Italy is a morality tale.  Just as my pal, the divorcee, was compelled to plunge into a ‘lasting and successful’ relationship at the first opportunity, few people who pick up the pieces of insolvent football clubs seem to be blessed with pragmatic expectations.  A second, even more damaging liquidation, haunts in the shadows.

I went on the tour with my Dad and son a few years ago.

Need to go back again soon.

    A brilliant afternoon.

The tour guide whose name I can’t remember was magic.

The stories I didn’t know that he was able to recite were just brilliant.

The passion this ghuy had for the club shone through.

Thanks for the reminder and I will definitely go again soon.

“Watch the Petrofac Training Cup First Round draw LIVE on the ‪#‎SPFL‬ YouTube channel on Monday from 1430.”

Yes, the one you’ve all been waiting for. The glamorous, glorious, most sought after competition of them all, the Petrofac Training cup is back!

And, in order to save money for all the wee diddy teams, the first round is split into north and south sections.

  7. 67heaven – which means either the reported details of the deal are wrong or he’s an idiot.

  8. So if my earlier figures are correct Sevco get around 126 pound profit for every 4800 pounds of shirts sold. Assuming 100% of ordered shirts are sold.

  9. kinglubo & 18:27,

Mike in toronto, i read one of your posts earler about Darnell Fisher being moved to midfield as a defensive midfielder.

He arrived at us as a midfielder but was then played at right back as we short of a right back in the youth team.

He is not scared of a tackle and seems quite tough. When we played hibs at Easter Road just under two years ago, he took a lot of rough stuff from the HIbs players and didn’t look intimidated.

He was out with a long term injury but looks like he worked on his upper body strength while recovering. He has some set of shoulders on him and looked stronger in the gameshe appeared in at the end of last season.

Livibhoy/Burghboy, having taken the CP tour some years back, I agree 100% with your comments re the experience and the enthusiasm/knowledge of the guides.

I think though, that the Club are missing a trick here. I was over collecting tickets for the Paisley games last week and was struck by the number of what were obviously foreign tourists in the superstore and having their photos taken outside the Park. How many of them would be aware that tours were available ? There is a small notice in the superstore but surely it would be worth the Club investing in a large banner or noticeboard advertising this major attraction.

As well as having financial benefits for the Club, enticing visitors to the city to enter Paradise would surely help bring them closer to the Club.

I also think that all hotels in the Greater Glasgow area should carry leaflets supplied by Celtic, advertising the tours.

These leaflets used to be available in the old information bureau at George Square when there were three different stadium tours advertised. I know as I used to re arrange them so that tourists would know which tour was best !

  21. The tour of the stadium is OK .but you would expect a big club like ours to have decent catering facilities. especially on a day it’s raining.when you could do with something hot to drink or eat.so that tells us that main stand is past it sell by date.but what do expect from Celtic.football club.time a lot of shareholders started to ask some serious questions.its just not about season tickets and merchandise.

Agree about the catering. Think the plan is to build a museum, café etc on the site of the old school but no idea when this is due for completion

Given the false allegation that Celtic benefitted from purchasing land from a council, disproved after investigation. Sports Scotland admitting it gave RFC £650k towards building the Murray Park facility is clear and blatant government assistance for the sole benefit of RFC above other clubs. The value of this is around £1.3m today and allowed the development of youth for sell on profits for RFC and the improved training of the first team to their benefit over all other Scottish teams.

It doesn’t even need investigating. It’s all admitted openly. This doesn’t make it ok.”

The main stand was built after the successful campaigns in Europe.

The sole purpose of which was to give the board somewhere comfy to plank their fat arses, a few bob spent in ’71 on the playing staff would have been better.

A joke from the day it was built, the structure needed to be supported 6 days out of 7.

  27. Socrates & Timbhoy3

Both make good points. My dad was underwhelmed with the board room. Which I was surprised about but I think there is an opportunity to do some new things. A museum like the one at Hampden and an interactive walll like the camp nou plus a hall of fame of our players and other features would be excellent. Also a cafe/bar would be a welcome addition. The tour is not advertised very well. You even have to hunt for it a bit on the official site. I think a lot more walk up fans and interested parties would go on it. We met one of the most enthusiastic football fans I have ever seen in my life coming back out the stadium. He was from Iraq and was snapping away with the enthusiasm of a Celtic mad child at the statues and front of the ground. We spoke to him for a short time and made sure he had his photo taken with each statue and then explained there was a tour and off he bounced toward the front door. Hope he managed to get on the tour itself. He looked like one of the weans seeing the inside of Charlie’s chocolate factory today.

The more the tour is supported the more the club will do to improve it. I will feedback via email and also make suggestions. Hopefully the tour guide will get a wee raise or bonus. She was a credit to the club today.
