Preference for a trip to Almaty

171

Despite the prospect of a journey deep into Asia on 26 August, I would prefer Kairat Almaty to progress to the playoff round in place of Slovan Bratislava.  Slovan looked to be in control of the first leg of the tie in Kazakhstan until a 65th minute red card, followed by a 90th minute penalty goal for the home side.  The Slovakians are the stronger side and remain favourites to progress but that late goal means they will need to battle in the return leg.

Coefficient Monkeys update: Fractional points in the bag this week for our future Champions League aspirations from our reliable helpers at Ibrox.  Really hoping Dundee United can get something away at Rapid Vienna tonight (old memories).  Rapid are not the side they once were, but neither are United.

Hibs almost achieved a shock in the Europa qualifiers last week, when they were within minutes of taking Midtjylland to penalties.  That experience will fortify them for their game at Partizan Belgrade tonight.

Getting clubs into the Conference League, league stage is the easiest way for a country to attain coefficient points.  It now looks likely only Aberdeen will get there.

I see Celtic, Aberdeen & Partick have been sanctioned for pyros. I assume the SPL are still looking into missiles being thrown at Celtic players in recent games at Ibrox? 🤔

    What a goal Quad ⚽️⚽️👏👏

    ——–

Cheers PPB; not bad for a crocked old defender 🫢

  3. I think the general consensus is we look reasonable at the back but very light up front both in terms of quality and depth so why are we supposedly tracking another defender?

If this is correct we do not seem to have a joined up plan. We seem determined to make an arse of this window as the school bhoys all seem to fall out with one another………..

Celtic appear to have no requirement to engage with us or just push the boat a little quicker to please fans/customers. Are they so far removed from reality that they can’t take the temperature in the room and throw us something? Could they try just a little harder to get a positive headline and get us all onside – clearly not.

Worst case scenario currently is that anyone with some influence hates everyone else and and they are all as stubborn as each other and if this is remotely close to the truth then we are in big trouble. At this moment anything less than that shitshow would seem positive………

  4. The co-efficient monkeys as you call them will pose a bigger threat to our league domination this year, looking at both squads they carry more threat than we do at present and Yang and Tilio will not trouble them, Hibs are confident and Hearts are making noises about splitting who they see as the top 2 why because they see Celtic as vulvernable, they have no European football and have made some signings, your attitude towards a challenge to us in the League smacks of complacency on a large scale and hope it isn’t the attitude of the Football department.

  5. If it’s Almaty we will thump them at a packed Parkhead and put the game to bed before our long trip out there.

We’ve shown much more resilience at the back in Europe recently and KT improves us significantly defensively since Bayern away so even if it’s tight we have experience of going away and not conceding.

I’d rather we play a team whos recent memories are of being traumatized at Celtic Park but thats just me.

  6. We’ll undoubtedly face a tougher and more treacherous path to the CL in the years ahead.

This for me, makes the lack of preparedness for what should be a fairly straightforward play off this year all the more frustrating.

This year could be our last in the CL for many years to come. Given how we’re run, that’s what I expect.

Why on earth has the exterior of the stadium been allowed to deteriorate?

Easy fixes, paint the grey and rusting poles, Install some LED screens that can be used to show historic players and goals as well as advertising whatever the hell they want to sell that week.

Do the board members not see this when they go to matches???

We’re a week into the season and theyre already two points behind us, and their manager thinks they’re a bunch of losers.

  9. When I think of the season ahead generally, and the CL in particular, the phrase “failure to prepare is preparing to fail” comes to my mind.

    very shabby!

  11. Does he well he managed that in the next game when he made changes and destroyed a team that I think I’m right in saying has a higher co-efficient than us, what I’m guarding against is unwarranted complacency especially looking at our wide options which are very poor, will we change to 442 2 who knows.

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Personally I think last night was a terrific outcome.

Slovan will have had two long trips early season and they’ll have to put a lot of energy into the return leg.

    Injury and suspension very possible.

I expect them to win the tie and face us.

    Respectfully DB …

    “Looking at both squads”

Depends who is looking … and what they’ve read or listened to before they looked.

If they’ve read the prevailing four legs good, too legs bad narratives?

“they carry more threat than we do at present” applies … and by a country mile.

    Otherwise no basis in fact.

  14. B2B

Wait and see, and if they get 5m as a parachute payment for not making the CL or much much more by getting into the goups watch how they invest that in players they want to make them better.

  15. bournesouprecipe on

No one seems to have a clue what’s going on, to such an extent they have to make things up. Fair bit of fact juggling going on, no substance as per usual, no knowledge just innuendo, and leave it out there.

Bigging up wee Barry bigging up a new era at Sevco. You wonder how they’ll shift the narrative if Brendan Rodgers ever gets the green light to conduct, the real business that Paul referred to, always happens towards the end of the window? We couldn’t possibly be planning for 5 in a row, and another title, could we? never finished with less than a ‘double’ you’d think would be enough for a contract extension? Nope.

The cost of players and the gaps, is very much within our reach (whatever it is) and shouldn’t matter unless you’ve a thing, about money and as well all know, the Celtic board don’t have any such thing. They’re probably preparing to blame Brendan for selling all the players they wanted to keep 😂 and will say if only “he’d had an eye for a player “ – oh wait It’s what they do best, blaming MON in the end, then Tony Mowbray, Gordon Strachan, Ronny Deila, Neil Lennon.

Long hard season ahead it’s good for business, not only shopping in the same market but looking at the same items. Until they splash the cash, Conservatism with a capital C and ‘downsizing’ will pervade the air, have we men of reversing? no wonder the fans swamped The Bunnet at the weekend 👍 the last man of reverie.

Celtic 2nd largest shareholder is the owner of Trainer Advertising. He will know the possibilities

  17. Lawwell and his puppets/muppets will not spend money on a £5mil +player until they know if we qualify for Champions League proper.

They know we are in the Europa Cup so they will be happy carrying on penny pinching.

Maloney ,Lennon of that level will be lined up to do the masters bidding.

  19. Coefficient Monkeys update:

The same coefficient monkeys that we haven’t managed to beat across 90 minutes in nearly a year?

The complacency within CP isn’t just confined to the boardroom methinks.

  20. Dexter P. Bampot on

The exterior of the ground is very shabby indeed now.

First appearances are important- for first time Hoops fans and for visiting fans from all over Europe.

It’s not as if the remedial works would be massive (leaving aside the the issue of South Stand redevelopment more generally).

In the very short term, it simply needs some buckets of paint and proper signage.

We should also be looking at better food and drink options. Let’s get real- the pubs around the ground may be ‘atmospheric’ but there is a dearth of quality food and drink options.

The immediate improvements could be done within days or weeks and would hardly cost the earth.

Big club mentality, wee club spending

  21. I think Kairat will probably be an ‘easier’ team to play. However if they do get through, then they can’t be mugs. Plus we’d have that very long trip, just before playing Sevco. I don’t know if their new wingers are any good, but they seemed to acquire them a lot easier than we are trying to get whoever we (I hope) get. Tic tic. Another groundhog day.

  22. no to almaty.

24 hours on flights across 12 times zones there and back . no to that .

beat the slovaks at home. we jaunt to bratland. job is a good yin.

  23. and all this stuff and nonsense about thems spending. just one big gamble for the European jackpot.

for an organization they said we are going to be sustainable.

doesnt seem that way to me so far

Antman is a speed merchant with a final ball, I was impressed with what I saw of him on his debut. I’d say on first impressions, Antman is a very good signing.

Gassama has a happy knack of scoring goals but I haven’t seen much else yet.

  26. I generally walk around the club quite a lot in the week. It does look tired, but has looked that way for a few years now. The last few weeks I can see an increase in the amount of Tours, especially kids and Mum & Dads. I’ve always believed that digital advertising around the stadium, but, especially at the front, is a must have in this day and age. Okay advertising could take place days before the game or even minutes before a tour and the rest of the time could have something similar to the banners and replays of famous victories. Also why not have Celtic songs over the outside the stadium sound system during the day for those looking round the ground, or taking the tour, visiting the shop or just going to the Pools office. Moving the start of the tour to the sports bar thing has massively detracted from the tour as before you went in through the main door which was a great way to start, felt special! Where are the the forward thinkers at the club? por cierto

  27. We’ve discussed before this fear of R2ngers. It stems from the cheating Murray era , the period they didn’t get caught.

Still makes me chuckle the fear that broke out whenever it was suggested he might come back.

Just a reminder for those now on DefCon1. Without cheating they have won one title in 50 years and that was played under Covid rules.

I have absolutely no doubt they will win another in my lifetime. So what! We are in a good place now , they can’t cheat like before. We will always be in the chase. Will they?

I am sure we will sign some good players before the window slams, if we don’t I will shout as loud as anyone.
