Preference for a trip to Almaty

171

Despite the prospect of a journey deep into Asia on 26 August, I would prefer Kairat Almaty to progress to the playoff round in place of Slovan Bratislava.  Slovan looked to be in control of the first leg of the tie in Kazakhstan until a 65th minute red card, followed by a 90th minute penalty goal for the home side.  The Slovakians are the stronger side and remain favourites to progress but that late goal means they will need to battle in the return leg.

Coefficient Monkeys update: Fractional points in the bag this week for our future Champions League aspirations from our reliable helpers at Ibrox.  Really hoping Dundee United can get something away at Rapid Vienna tonight (old memories).  Rapid are not the side they once were, but neither are United.

Hibs almost achieved a shock in the Europa qualifiers last week, when they were within minutes of taking Midtjylland to penalties.  That experience will fortify them for their game at Partizan Belgrade tonight.

Getting clubs into the Conference League, league stage is the easiest way for a country to attain coefficient points.  It now looks likely only Aberdeen will get there.

“Its a good shape United have now”

    (Revolving Door Dodds, 42:59)

    43:09 – Rapid Vienna score.

I suppose him going back through the revolving door yet again is unlikely?

  2. By way of context as to how shit Plzen were. The team they beat (Servette) after extra time in last round just lost 3-1 at home to Utrecht !

Since then Plzen had a man suspended and their best player sold.

  3. Burnley,

Brendan said last week he has not been offered a contract.

If Brendan is telling lies,as your good self keeps alluding to,then it seems very strange to me,that after his comments, there was no comment from our Board stating their position on the subject. If only one of the parties is willing to state the facts publicly, then he should be believed until proven otherwise.

Seems ,after a week, this wont be the case, unless of course our Board have all become,Trappist Monks, and cannot possibly comment.

  4. Arabs and Hibees both doing great with 10 mins plus to go.

    I hope I’m not jinxing them…..

  7. Two brilliant results tonight for both the Tim teams( FF ).Hibs look through but still a lot to do as it stands for Dundee Harp,( FF ).C.Mon the Fenians.

  9. Bischoff valued at,£6.2 million.We are interested.

    Aw ur wi,Aye. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

  10. Can you imagine the fun we’ll have when in the away leg of the champions league qualifier we need a goal and the only attacking player left on the bench is yang?

I wonder who will get the most pelters?

  11. Two impressive results for the Scottish sides tonight. Both very welcome.

Hibs look to be in a really good place right now. 0-2 away to Partizan is mightily impressive.

  12. My morning readback suggests a dominant sense of many supporters exhibiting some signs of trauma.

Despite the club’s general and overall success; trophy after trophy and a very strong fiscal position.

I noted in a previous article:

“How far would we need to go at home and abroad before the blogosphere and its devotees said: “Gee, everyone that works for Celtic (backroom, board, coaches, execs and players included) are really doing us proud ?”

I’m not saying we shouldnt expect better from every department (that doesnt exist) but jeebus, how good has our success been – even under the alleged dunces we employ across the club ?

  13. I’ve no doubt whatsoever Celtic will sign quality players before the window closes. Never fails to amaze me the bedwetters in our support fall for the MSM merde narrative every Summer window.

Celtic are not just for Rodgers. BR does what every manager would do and set out his stall accordingly: a wish list every supporter can get on board with. However, unless there are exceptional circumstances, quality players Celtic are in the bidding mix for won’t be making any final decisions until: A) European Cup (Champs League) group qualification is secured.

    B) All final offers have been received (end of transfer window).

That’s the nature of football business for a club offering an SPL bed. Celtic, despite many faults, are the envy of most clubs across the world (a business strategy well executed). That’s why our Glasgow derby rivals, Sevco a la Rangers*, are now trying to copy that long road ahead. Ave Ave

  14. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Nordsjælland have agreed to sell their CB, Lucas Høgsberg (who only just turned 19) for €15m.

The club seem to have mastered the transfer business, regularly getting huge fees for their players.

We did well to get one of their star players for a comparatively low sum.

Feels like a really retro night for Scottish football.

The 2 teams will be pleased to have sorted their transfer dealings early and given themselves the best chance of qualifying.

Sadly, there are signs that sevco have also scouted and strengthened well

    Timmy 7 (Sic)

”Who said the manager has signed a new deal ? That would be good news and can hopefully end the game theory or even game playing and can allow focus on football. I am not aware of it though.”

    Burnley78 on 7th August 2025 4:59 pm,

    Timmy 7

I haven’t checked back but I think I mentioned yourself instead of Chairbhoy (Sic) in prior post.

    Apologies if so.

It was Timbhoy163 on 7th August 2025 10:09 am, that picked up on the erroneous nonsense that Brendan Rodgers had a new deal, the Manager has clearly told us that wasn’t the case.

    Burnley78 on 7th August 2025 6:32 pm,

    Kinglubo

Regardless of whether one loves or does not love BR the owner really has messed up.

As soon as BR did not extend his 3 year deal and was running down the clock decisive action was needed.

We didn’t take it and he is still here.

Imagine it is your business. You have a guy running it day to day or even month to month.

He is clearly he is leaving at the end of the year.

Would you entrust him to make huge investment decisions which will affect the business for the next 4 years ? I know I would not. I don’t know many business folk who would.”

For someone who presents themselves as some kind of business guru you seem to struggle with basic concepts.

BR has not been offered an extension to his three year deal, he stated that quite clearly.

Celtic managers normally work on a one year rolling contract, aa do many of their employees, which means they are always in theory, in the last year of their contract.

Ange, for instance was on a one year rolling contract* therefore, following your logic, should not have been able to sign players ever.

Celtic do not have an owner, they have a principal shareholder, one of your knowledgeable business associates should be able to explain the difference to you.

They also have a Board, with a Chairman at it’s head and an Executive, who are also part of the Board – again a knowledgeable business associate can explain how that is “meant” to work in a functional PLC and how that “works” at Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers is the Football Manager, not a business manager, hopefully if your associate has explained things properly you will understand the difference.

Celtic are made up of two fundamental components, Celtic PLC which is a business, Celtic FC which is the football club.

Although the football club produces the vast majority of the revenues, all of that revenue is controlled by the PLC, the football club relies 100% on PLC to invest the money back.

!!Bada Bing!! on 7th August 2025 7:09 pm?

Running down a contract would only be described as that,if an extension hasn’t been offered

    Burnley78 on 7th August 2025 7:14 pm,

    Bada Bing

    Or offered and not accepted.

Brendan Rodgers has not been offered an extended contract, as Turkeybhoy states, he was unequivocal about that in a press conference.

It would be quite easy for the Board &/or the Executive to correct any factual error in BR’s statement and they have not.

You called Brendan Rodgers a Charlatan, it’s my contention that BR speaks clearly and well, while you have been caught out on a number of “fibs”.

Let’s face it, you are no business guru, you are a modern day snake oil salesmen, and those not on the deludamol are not buying it.

    Burnley78 on 7th August 2025 2:58 pm,

”A complete morron would surely see that WGS winning 3 leagues out of 4 against a scarily over spending rival, whilst we were rightsizimg our football cost base, and by getting to CL 16 beating Man U and Milan was simply an astonishing performance. His achievement is hardly even recognised by many sadly.”

    Wee bit of perspective eh!!

When WGS took over Rangers were a basket case and already technically bust.

Celtic won the League and Hearts came second – hardly your strong Rangers.

Rangers didn’t start spending again until the “dream team” of Walter and Ally came back.

We had the “Willo Flood window,” that season, nothing to do with “rightsizing” and everything to do with the parsimonious Board not wanting to spend money, having given up on old firm competitiveness (Rangers won the next three in a row before officially going bust).

You often cite WGS’s great European record, well taking over fortress Celtic Park from MO’N and maintaining that record was indeed special, a great achievement, however, you always fail to mention his away record in Europe which was diabolical, the worst away record of any Celtic manager this century

You are moaning about the current football under BR&CO yet have totally forgotten WGS’s “pragmatic”approach to the hame and the “sieve.”

*Once he said he wasn’t going to renew DD and the Board offered him a more lucrative longer term contract – too little, too late – which is why they did not want to make the same mistake BR Mk2.

    Hail Hail

  18. Great night for Scottish teams.

Hopefully United can get the job done next week.

With Legia getting hammered at Larnaca it seems Hibs may have another mountain to climb to get to the groups but the energy in their set up seems really good.

Tricky tie for United should they win they will play AIK Stockholm or Eto Gyor.

Both the above are tricky but winnable.

Aberdeen will play either Drita of Kosovo or the old Steau Bucharest team to reach the Europa League groups.

It is not impossible, although still unlikely, that Scotland has 2 Champions League teams, 1 Europa League team and 2 Conference League teams.

A more likely scenario is 1 Champions League team, 1 Europa League team and 2 Conference League teams.

Either way there is a chance our national Coefficient could get a boost. Which would be a good thing.

  19. Chairbhoy

It must of really hurt that WGS was successful you moaned about Celtics leadership and direction back then even more than now.

Yes rangers were a basket case and bust but got to the Europa final in 2008. They massively over spent through the early to late noughties which funnily enough is why they went bust. WGS dealt with downsizing and delivered. The football was not great but effective at that level just as Neil was in 2012 season. Our 3 best in Europe’s top competition in 46 years btw.

Yes maybe I should have said de facto owner and not owner. Even majority shareholder. Hopefully that makes you happy. Either way it’s the guy Brendan has a hot line to according to your good self.

I would never claim to be any kind of business expert. Apologies if I have misled anyone on that score.

I think you seem to offer all the great solutions to Celtic being so badly run. Maybe you are a frustrated business guru ? I simply accept we live within our means and have survived and done really well against a basket case over spending rival in a wee pond with a glass ceiling.

I have no desire to tell Celtic where they are going wrong on a daily basis. No bitter wee personal agendas. I really hope our manager succeeds. I personally don’t see it happening. I do think second time around it has been less enjoyable and far less effective than the first time and especially than Ange.

    Really simple.

  20. Chairbhoy

Ah the Willo Flood window. That old chestnut eh.

The exception that proves the rule I think they call it.

  21. Burnley78 @ 7:55 am,

No, you miss remember, definitely a member of the very happy clappy sect in dem days…

WGS did great, certainly much better than I thought he would, much better than an inauspicious start suggested.

Yes, they did get to the Europa final with the “dream team” playing anti-football – seen off WGS, Tony Mowbray and the fledgling Lenny, when they went bust Lenny did really come of age.

The one agenda I have an have made it perfectly clear, is to stick up for Brendan Rodgers and his undeserved criticism and character assassinations.

My feeling is that he is a good big club manager, a good provincial club manager, a goid development club manager, so a good fit for Celtic.

If/when he leaves his legacy will be there for all to see and a turquoiseprint for Managers established.

There is very few fholk in the overspend camp these days CQN did a great job of educating us in that respect.

We have a PLC that wants to make a lot of money, that is it’s nature and it’s up to the stakeholders and customers who want to see a “world class” football club to shout for adequate investment.

Willo Flood eh!! The more things change…

Apologies for the facetious comments if I picked you up wrong on the business acumen – as you are well aware I’m very much in the amateur department there.

    Hail Hail

  22. Chairbhoy for clarity and to reply respectfully regarding Willo’s window.

The business had long since ‘right sized’ I think most people knew that WGS had already decided he was moving on. Indeed, as Tontine Tim said yesterday, he had wanted to leave after 3 years and his treatment prior to our title win in 2008.

This was an example of the club thinking the league was won and knowing their manager was leaving. It happens. Not every call made is the right one in business I believe. Game theory etc.

Perhaps it is living so close to a triple crown MBA institution down there which gives you such an astute business brain ? Maybe helps you see all the mistakes those running the club this past 25 years have made ?

Or maybe it’s why mere business mortals who only attended it for 2 years (1991/2) can only see an incredibly solid job done by those tasked to deliver.

19 leagues in 25 years vs 7 in the previous 25 years suggests more good calls than bad.

Wins in the top competitions vs clubs from all the Top 5 leagues plus Holland Belgium and Portugal also suggests those running it are doing more right than wrong.

  23. Chairbhoy

Best we agree to differ. Clearly both want the best for the club. Perhaps your ambition or expectation is greater than mine.

My view Brendan 1 was really good / great. Brendan 2 not so good / not proven yet.

  24. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good morning CQN.

Only two days until we see the hoops in action.

    Good times.

I’m not as confident about the prospects for Hibs and Dundee United.

Big credit due for brilliant results away from home last night.

Still work to do for both, IMHO. Both ties in the balance.

  25. Burnley78…

Didn’t mean to suggest you knew nothing about business either – I know you have been involved in successful enterprises.

Did you go to the same institution as St Stivs?

Yes, business is definitely not my prowess, did have one for the best part of ten years supporting blue-chip clientèle so didn’t do everything wrong:))))
