Premier League TV deal, Brexit

306

It is small compensation that the FA Premier League TV deal for 2019-2022, announced yesterday, wasn’t another 71% increase, like the last time. With two of the smaller packages still to be decided, this contract is roughly comparable with the current deal.

The encouraging sign, for those of us with our noses pressed against the window, is that Sky, who won four of the five packages awarded so far, reduced their price per game to £9.3m, down from £10.8m, committing a total of £3.579bn over three years.

BT, who paid less per game for the current deal than Sky, upped their price for their one successful package to £9.22m per game from £7.6m, committing a total of £885m.

The remaining two packages are to broadcast the entire league programme across two match days each, three of which will be midweek and one bank holiday fixture list. The Premier League hope to entice additional competition from Amazon and Facebook into this space, but it is far from certain these rights will attract significant value. Will 10 games broadcast simultaneously attract significantly more armchair fans than one major game? I’m not convinced.

My expectation is for the final domestic rights figure to slightly underperform the current deal. What the Premier League has in its favour is the value of the pound compared to the euro, dollar and pretty much any other currency of note.

Since the last international rights were agreed, the pound depreciated following the Brexit vote, so foreign TV companies get far more £s for their domestic currency. While this will support GBP denominated TV revenues, it could mask a softening of the underlying value.

It should be noted that Celtic also ‘win’ from the flag waving act of economic illiteracy that is Brexit, due to their Champions League euro denominated remits. One small ray of sunshine in a very overcast ‘sky’.

It confounds me how any body of normal sane mind could invest any trust in the likes of Boris or worse JRM…. Or David Davis.

  7. The Hands Can’t Hit

    Here is a rational explanation.

What we have to spend won’t improve the chances.

    http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/15993029.Neil_Cameron__Celtic_are_rolling_in_the_green_but___10m_buys_you_average_footballers/?ref=mr&lp=6

    So why spend it?

If we don’t qualify for CL it’s a cushion . If we do we might be able to move up market next season.

Ten years ago steak mince cost say £5. Beef mince £3.

    Now steak mince costs £20.

Beef mince now costs £10 but it’s not quality and we don’t have £20.

The risk to not qualifying will be significantly reduced if we can go into the qualifying rounds as match fit as possible and as settled a side as possible.

  8. Zenit ?

There are several Zenit Supporters Clubs in Italy —

They seem to think these are what’s needed for Thursday –

    Lunev / Criscito / Smolkinov / / Mammana / Mevjla / Yerokhin / Paredes / Rigoni / Kuzyyaev / Kokorin / Zabolotny .

Opinion is divided re Zabolotny – many think he is a tottie .

Kokorin has played and scored at Celtic Park — when Moscow Dynamo won 0-1 .. Gary Caldwell lost him in the move leading to the goal.

  9. So the official “Registration of a charge” document has been filed with Companies House yesterday by Sevco, confirming that it was (as if we didn’t know anyway!) indeed a loan, and not an overdraft facility that the SMSM via Fat Jabba would want you to believe. The document reads thus: The Rangers Football Club Ltd (*Sevco) as borrower, Close Leasing Ltd as lender. Standard Security of (1) Albion Car Park and (2) Edmiston House.

So Sevco are “borrowing” an overdraft facility? What are Close Leasing lending them? The facility? LOL!

Why the continuing lies and bulls**t Jabba?

    1. I don’t think anyone is advocating £10m per player- I have yet to see this statement made but people keep on using it as some sort of yard stick. What a lot of people are seeking is a higher average spend on players- moving away from the circa £1m pound signings.

    2. As for the assertion that you have to spend £10m to get a quality player. That is nonsense. In England, yes, it rings true; but Celtic aren’t in England. On the continent, how many teams spend £10m per player outside of the top 4 leagues (France, Italy, Spain and Germany) and even within the top 4 leagues, how many teams outwith the top 6 in those leagues spend £10m per player?

The Anderlecht team played us off the park at home- were they a team of £10m+ players when assembled?

The article is an attempt to muddy the waters and paints facts which patently are untrue.

Celtic should buy in Europe and sell to England. That should be the scouting and transfer policy.

  11. Go tell the Spartim on

i think everyone knows and understands inflation, so why are we keeping £30m in the bank when this will be worth what next season, in relative terms? so a player valued at £3m this year suddenly becomes £5m next year, you get the picture, this will be the reason for not spending again next year. So this cushion, that we might need, just gets eaten up in costs next year when we try and spend, frugally, to merely tread water.

CL qualifiers next year are more precarious than in previous years and we’ve seen the collapse in our team on a few occasions but its alright cause we might be stronger (Jozo, Boyata will go, who knows when, before, during or after the qualifiers).

It beggars belief on here the parsimony, i get it in the years before the £30m in the bank, but its stretching it too far to explain another reason from the big book of reasons for celtic not improving from a position of strength.

“If we don’t qualify for CL it’s a cushion . If we do we might be able to move up market next season.”

And if we don’t qualify for the CL this year, what are our chances of qualifying next year? That’s my concern.

The old auto correct? Friend’s husband is called Eunan and I texted his wife to ask if he could do me a favour (I had lost his number) autocorrect didn’t recognise Eunan and duly changed it to Moron!

Have the SFA contacted Sevco yet, to raise their concerns over the unsustainable amount of debt they are accumulating?

  23. No-one is asking for a £10m player apparently, just a bigger spend and not on an nglish league player (despite the value we will get from Fraser Forster, Moussa Dembele, Olivier N’tcham and Charly Musonda.

So what price is feasible. We are being told that the buy-out fee fpr Odsomme Edouard is circa £7m- so would you do it? It would be a definite gamble- Odsonne might come good or he might be another flash young player who does not fulfill potential. The Jury is out and Brendan does not want to raise discussions about this just yet. We then, wait dor the remainder of the season to see if this is a good buy or too rich for what Odsonne is at this point. You might have a “Daddy or chips” option of buying Paddy or Odsonne but both are unlikely unless Moussa goes for over £25m or so.

That’s what £7m buys you- potential or a Championship level talent like Assombalonga or Rhodes or Daryl Murphy. When good proven defenders are going for £57m and £75m we have to cry out of that market and focus on the “projects” (Edouard) or journeymen like Comperr.

We should, in my opinion have bought one more CB in last wimdow but, with or without that, we have an increasing hard road to travel and I am not convinced that some people’s solutions are as much of a “no-brainer” as they claim
