Premier League TV deal, Brexit

306

It is small compensation that the FA Premier League TV deal for 2019-2022, announced yesterday, wasn’t another 71% increase, like the last time. With two of the smaller packages still to be decided, this contract is roughly comparable with the current deal.

The encouraging sign, for those of us with our noses pressed against the window, is that Sky, who won four of the five packages awarded so far, reduced their price per game to £9.3m, down from £10.8m, committing a total of £3.579bn over three years.

BT, who paid less per game for the current deal than Sky, upped their price for their one successful package to £9.22m per game from £7.6m, committing a total of £885m.

The remaining two packages are to broadcast the entire league programme across two match days each, three of which will be midweek and one bank holiday fixture list. The Premier League hope to entice additional competition from Amazon and Facebook into this space, but it is far from certain these rights will attract significant value. Will 10 games broadcast simultaneously attract significantly more armchair fans than one major game? I’m not convinced.

My expectation is for the final domestic rights figure to slightly underperform the current deal. What the Premier League has in its favour is the value of the pound compared to the euro, dollar and pretty much any other currency of note.

Since the last international rights were agreed, the pound depreciated following the Brexit vote, so foreign TV companies get far more £s for their domestic currency. While this will support GBP denominated TV revenues, it could mask a softening of the underlying value.

It should be noted that Celtic also ‘win’ from the flag waving act of economic illiteracy that is Brexit, due to their Champions League euro denominated remits. One small ray of sunshine in a very overcast ‘sky’.

  1. Real, Bayern and Barca definitely get favourable referees, genuine UEFA establishment Clubs. That’s why an English team wont win the CL and neither will PSG. Having said that Real deserved the win tonight. Marcelo was sensational as ever.

It was a stonewall pen i think and the boy was lucky not to get a second yellow as was Neymar for that dive, after which he disappeared from the game.

  2. Man City will win the CL this season.

I agree the ref was a homer tonight, my postie Pedro won’t be giving a toss, he will be on cloud nine when I speak to him in the morning, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ditches the postie uniform for a Real top, if he hasn’t I will be amazed.

Still it was a good game if you discount the theatrical antics, some top, top quality on show.

It’s difficult to claim that you are letting the economics talk when there is £30m in the bank (£50m gross according to neganon) but yet we claim penury; this is self-enforced frugalism (as you have admitted- saving for a rainy day).

I will need to find the Deloitte paper released this year considering the champions of the top 8 or 10 leagues in Europe. From recollection, Celtic had a larger wage bill than either the champions of Holland or Switzerland. The argument that our wage bill cannot attract players falls on its face for that reason.

While we are not as rich as those in the premier league, it only has 20 teams and the top 6 shop in a league out with our means. Are we to believe that the remaining 14 clubs are going to pip Celtic to every potential signing? It’s a convenient and easy bogeyman.

  4. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE

Been following your posts and have to say I agree with most of what you say.

We are being conditioned into believing pish, they tell us that players don’t want to come to scotland, what a load of bollix, pay them and they will come, it’s no rocket science, anyone who says anything different has an agenda, or they are so thick……they prob read the record.

It’s all about the money, be it the top of the game to the bottom, money is the God, our suits are so fixated by teh money they have £30+ mill in the bank FFS, some will tell you this is a good thing, jeezo, brainwashing at it’s finest, when in God’s name has ever a scottish club had that kinda cash in the bank ffs.

Aye, through CQN and Pedro’s influence, the support are swallowing the pish hook line and sinker, but the balance sheet is healthy, Dearie Me.

Man City will win the CL this season.

*huvtae agree here, they are dynamite this season, got off tae a flyer last season until a plucky wee team fae Glasgow stopped them their tracks. Lost their next game at White Hart Lane, drew 3 more and then lost the game prior to playing us at home before losing the one after.

Very poor season considering their outlay and Peps coat looked on a shaky peg, however bounced back amazingly this season.

  6. Citeh are a super side but rely too heavily on De Bruyne and Aguero. I cant see past the 3 super clubs, Bayern, Barca and Real. Bayern are flying under the radar a wee bit, i think they could win it, they’ve been revitalised under Heynckes.

  7. TT

Aye, they are doin good for being miles ahead in the best league in the world, maybes if they had a wee bit of competition from the likes of that wee scottish team :-)

PSG will imo knock Real out, they will score more than two in Paris, Real were blessed tonight, a homer of a ref and two sclaffed goals, align with PSG missing a few sitters, we will see.

Should never have gotten their pen either

Now Biton’s out for the season as well? Never known a team to suffer so many long term injuries in the same season. What’s going on at Lennoxtown? Can it really just all be down to bad luck or are we culpable in some way? A ridiculous number of serious injuries. Total bummer.

  10. The Hands Can’t.

My point about missing out for a season was in the context of the spreadsheet and comments I posted yesterday. Your subsequent posts ignore orginal context and misuse my meaning.

Did you look at the spreadsheet and change the variables in it to establish the point I was making? It was not one I created the spreadsheet for. It was to try and get an idea how much would be needed to fund a better quality squad without turning an “investment” into a loss that could be damaging.

When doing that and purely on that basis, missing out one season in 3 was manageable. Not the Doomsday scenario predicted.

I didn’t say I like it or advocate it. I’m saying that in assessing the risks, it justifies current policy where we have qualified in the last two CLs and hopefully will again, but if we don’t that £30m will mean not having to sell our best players if it happens as we have had to do in the past. It stops us being dependent on CL money and we all know what that did to the integrity of our game and the club who did operate that way.

We have been beaten by teams on lower budgets, but that logic suggests we are spending too much and not getting the value from our spend. There again perhaps there is a premium to get players of even the current level to join us?

It’s not enough to insist it’s about parsimony. I mean if we can just go out and buy better players why don’t we? That would keep the support happy so why not do it? There are other factors involved and you cannot ignore them because it doesn’t suit your case.

I cannot prove there are gettable players out there better than we have, no more than you can, but I can point to reasons why our spend is limited and the alternatives of minimising not qualifying, that are more dependable than spending money that adds no value. That last bit is the point.

I see this as more than just keeping me/you happy. I love it when we win playing well and that is what I want, but I also want those coming after me to have a team worth watching to support and that is what a sustainable financial policy provides.

We loved the Seville years but it cost too much and endangered our future, so we cut our cloth. Our main rivals didn’t in 2008 and by 2010 needed honest mistakes to win titles and qualify for the CL and as Comp Off should show, lied to get CL income in 2011 whilst the Celtic support were at each others throats because we wouldn’t spend to match.

How much would the wage bill for the Seville squad be now? A squad with more better quality experienced hardened players in it than we have now. I’d fancy them to qualify if they were with us in June. So what wages would that squad of 16 command today?

    Could we afford them?

  11. Auldheid I read back at your recent posts with amazement.

You are clearly an intelligent person but your recent posts remind me of Paul67 and scream of an agenda.

You are want to accuse posters of agendas or hardened positions yet you do the same. You try desparately to intellectualise your position whilst those who do the same you dismiss. I think your are hypocritical in the extreme.

Worse than that (and horrible for all of us) you are one of the party of four who have fought an important fight. But recently you peddle board lines like paul67.

Frankly you cant be trusted. Like Paul67 you seem to have thrown your lot in with the celtic board.

we criminally racist supporter. the ones who finance everything. the ones who are the victims of racism. we are just your victims.

so auldheid are you up for that pint? given you are joining in with the racism, whilst saying you are still behind res 12 it will make for a great discussion over a pint?

incredible stuff from cqn. not even FF would try some of this.

BTW for those who say spending the £50m we have in the bank would mean going into debt. Celtic have some long term loadns with the Clydesdale on such good terms they never want to pay it off.

Nail biting time, can our injury ravished team rise to the occasion. I surely hope so, we have enough talent in our first team. There is some risk to our double treble with the squad depletion. Beating the Russian Huns will advance our euro reputation but getting a treble this year will last for eternity. I know which one I want. Hail hail.

Brendan – I hope your match day plans are equally on track.

I’m no tactician but would recommend starting with Ntcham, Kouassi and Broonie in midfield in order to win the midfield battle early on.

Just of the phone to my mate ( he’s on route to Edinburgh to pick up visa for the away leg ) , he told me the bad news about Bitton. Not good , operation today. He did make me laugh though. I asked what he thought of the games on tv the past 2 nights. He replied that his bhoys watched but he made do with watching Coronation st with his Mrs in another room .
