Preparing professionally for the Europa League

448

At his presidential inauguration in 1963, Lydon B. Johnson said, “I would give anything not to be standing here today”.  It is with a similar sense of mourning that we look at tonight’s Europa League qualifier between two Baltic sides, Spartaks Jurmala and Suduva, to discover who we face in the play-off round.  I wouldn’t give anything to be in the Champions League qualifier, but I’d happily concede a few league defeats.

Europa League group stage qualification can be worth up to £10m to Celtic, but even winning the trophy will not come near to closing the financial gap between this tournament and Champions League group stage money.  Still, it is an important tournament for reasons other than money.

Accumulating Uefa coefficient points in the Champions League has proven very difficult for Celtic.  Winning games in the Europa will be easier; we have to deliver on this target.  It is also important to qualify from the group into the knockout stages.  We have not faced genuine domestic competition in a very long time, and I see little change this year.  As a consequence, we need European action after Christmas.  Better teams that Celtic have licked their wounds and got on with life in the Europa League, we need to do the same and prepare for the tournament in a professional manner.

I don’t know if the intervening 16 years have been kind to Suduva since we last met 16 years ago, but they hold a special place in our folklore, so I hope they progress tonight.  I also have a great wee story of one man pitching up in the North Stand for a few minutes at the home game, just to be there.

It’s not just the initial fee , it’s the whole remuneration package that has to be evaluated.

Remember Robbie Keane on circa £65k. Just as well on this occasion DD personally picked up the tab.

  3. Not a word from the board after the CL exit, we laugh at the Huns and their statements, Lawell should be issuing one trying to calm the waters, but he won’t. Even if he did I would not believe a word of it. It will be the same old pish come 1 September, we tried to get so and so but we just couldn’t get it over the line. I am one of the gullibles who renews my season book every year but this is the same old same old. Our transfer dealings are the most protracted there seems to be, others tie transfers up in no time. Need a bit of positive news at the minute as the SMSM continue to big up Sevco. Players like KT, Griff and Broony must feel well pissed off at the minute

  4. Tell you what, someone said the other day, about renewing our season tickets, until we see who is coming to play in Hoops,I’m up for that ,also same applies to new Stripes ,that is just one big Con,also never mind what other clubs are doing, Celtic for me that’s all I care about, and lastly I hope there will be big changes in the Board Room,if I was a very rich fan I would buy all Dermot’s share, and I would be more hands on at the club ,Peter Lawell is partly to blame, but the real culprits is Dermot Desmond.

We have three strikers none of whom are 100% fit!

Will be interesting on 2nd September anyway.

On Deneyer, he would cover the two problem areas of Centre Half and could fill in at Right Back. Also can play as Defensive Midfielder. So for this reason it makes a lot of sense to sign him.

    Welcome Arzani

The only ‘mess’ I see is on the hyperbolic internet.

I’ve posted ad nauseum on these pages about the need for Celtic to maintain ‘the gap’ by means of

using the transfer market wisely, buying players nobody else in Scotland could afford, (Ntcham)

(Edouard) and just like many of the thousands of disappointed fans this morning, i’m one.

Where we’ve deviated from that is with Brendan’s squad fillers it seems, and a failure to buy more mega £million players.

I agree with Brendan Rodgers ( and Stan Petrov ) that in order to improve Celtic defensively, we need to join the vastly increased EPL price lunacy, meaning that our Harrods shopped players cost at least double what they used to, and not only that their necessary wage would smash our wage structure, if they could be persuaded to sign i.e. John McGinn’s £23K.

Celtic are a big club that play all over Europe every year trying to qualify to get into the obscenely financially corrupt UEFA competitions, ( See Original Rainjurz ) and there are better sides than ours that can’t get in, more often than we do. I think we need to strengthen for the Europa and will do, in this window.

The trick is where you shop CSC

    Correct about ‘where you shop’.

I read an article saying AEK back four cost less than £2m combined.

If we had their back four we would be heading into the final qualifying round.

  14. Arzani? Who gives a toss. A player we don’t need signed by a CEO who doesn’t care.

And as ever silence from the board as ever.

And Paul 67? He just as he you to move on. He is probably still plotting with his pal about Rodgers.

He looks like a very skilful player.

Notwithstanding other issues, shouldn’t we be past the stage of reacting negatively because we don’t know much about a new signing? Didn’t we learn anything from signing Lubo? (Clearly, before anyone gets excited, not a comparison of the two players abilities btw…simply a reason to hold fire until the guy has had a chance to play for us)

For you it’s been an absolute shambles since 2004…..you’re the Scarlet Pimpernel in good times for the club, and you absolutely revel in the bad times with your vitriol….which gets worse year on year since 2004.

Having zero balance over a long time has made you a joke figure.

Manchester City’s Australian World Cup winger Daniel Arzani SIGNED BY LAWWELL.

Thank goodness there is someone out there who isnt depressed by all things Celtic . I cannot believe the misery I read on here.

The team has been severely handicapped by injuries yet in my opinion the shadow squad we put out against Hearts were beaten by agriculural football at its best and as for the CL qualifier v AEK, despite isolated criminal defending, overall we had the best of the game with by far the best goal opportunities.

Yes it would be nice to see some incoming transfers but a fully fit Celtic team will skoosh the league again. Have faith everyone.
