Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

  14. Everyone seems to agree that friendly games are no guide to how the team plays during the coming season…

…but I’m struggling to think why they wouldn’t?

…poor touch, midfield over-run, lack of ideas, ball bouncing of your big new centre forwards knees and ankles?

…aren’t these some sort of indicator?

Aye,and being the nice fair-minded guy I am,I pointed that out to my mates.

Strangely that riled them even more.

Bit like when I told them I didnae see anything wrong wi Butcher’s “goal” in the 89 final.

Happy days,I miss the slightly explosive Craic sometimes.

Then I remember-pipe,slippers and a quiet life is much less wear on the nerve ends!

” Losing a friendly 6-2 brought a an unwelcome feeling . Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival . Ouch . Made me feel better “.

    Old Firm thinking !

  23. Celtic tend to dominate so much of my life during the season that I try to take a break from it all between the end of the season and the first competitive match of the new campaign.

Consequently, whilst Celtic were being thumped in Germany we were getting lost in the park, only finding our way back to the car after approximately 14kms. It wasn’t helped by the youngest peeing on her flip flop (not intentionally I should add!!) and the strap of her dress (best not to ask!).

I can’t comment on any of the pre season performances as I’ve not watched any of them. However, a 6-2 drubbing to a second tier, though clearly not second rate, German side does not make for joyous reading on thee ol CQN.

Most of us will remember the summer of 1987, prior to our centenary campaign, when Arsenal came to Parkhead and played sublimely to win 5-0. The conversation in the pub after the game was similar to what was said by many on here last night. There were those who expressed disgust, anger and despair and there were those who took a ‘lets wait and see’ attitude.

To a large extent both were correct. It was right to express concern at not only the result but also the performance that sunny afternoon. However, it was equally correct to highlight that honours aren’t given out in July.

If the performance and/or result in Belfast isn’t greatly improved from last night then we may indeed have problems.

  24. pabloh_AKA_NEIL LENNON on

The 6-2 game. How can you not smile.

Still don’t think the dodds goal for ex-club was over the line, should’ve been 6-1.

Henrik was just ridiculous that day!

You don’t want to know what she did to the other one!

  27. Esther Rantzen may want to know why it hasn’t been replaced then,

Saying that the wean may have the same question.

We know the answer ya tight git.
