Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

  1. The 1989 Cup Final is one of the most enjoyable occasions I can remember as a Celtic fan.

Not a classic, but big Roy barging everybody oot the way to grab the ball and take the throw in when it should have been theirs, will live in the memory for ever.

    Yes Pimms.

Somethings not quite right when a 67 regular is on the pimms.

  3. Has there been any reason given as to why the RC game has been moved to the evening kick-off rather than the normal lunchtime kick-off for live games?

The game was never going to be a 3pm kick-off – anybody thinking otherwise has been living on Mars for the last 20 years – but why tea-time?

I can only think Sky have already got a full schedule of sport that lunchtime, but with no EPL on then that would seem unlikely, unless they have live coverage of the wasp arm-wrestling from Banff.

Though the Championship starts that weekend and there is a 12.15 kick-off so that might be the reason

Oh, and virtually none of our away games will be 3pm kick-offs for most of the season, nor will our games after the split so might as well get the moans in now instead of acting all shocked when it’s announced

Lennon’s fear over growing injury list

Neil Lennon is concerned about his side’s growing injury list ahead of next week’s Champions League clash with Cliftonville.

A depleted Celtic side lost 6-2 to Greuther Furth last night with midfielders Scott Brown and Joe Ledley still to feature in the three games played so far.

Adam Matthews is another still waiting to see action with the midfield options starting to run thin with Victor Wanyama about to seal a £12.5m move to Southampton.

Fraser Forster and Charlie Mulgrew picked up knocks in last night’s defeat with neither player likely to be risked in Friday’s final tour match against Union Berlin.

“My main concern is we’re picking up a lot of injuries,” Lennon admitted.

“We’ve not seen Brown, Ledley or Matthews yet, and James Forrest and Gary Hooper have hardly kicked a ball on this trip.

“Charlie has picked up a strain too, and we will have to see how he is. That’s where we are, we are stretched and it’s all taking its toll.

“It’s a concern because I don’t know what team I’m going to have available for next week and we’ve still got another game to come in Berlin on Friday.”

Wanyama was due to play against Greuther Furth but was left out at the last minute with reports that his move to Southampton is back on.

The 22-year-old is expected to fly to Southampton to discuss personal terms as Celtic prepare to bank a Scottish record transfer fee.
