Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

  1. Maybe at the next q&a we could raise these concerns rather than ask about a bunch of cheats from the south side.

The 3 to 5pm Saturday blackout is a FIFA/ UEFA requirement but national associations can select the time frame.

Scotland went along with England but the rule and what it was intended to deliver is killing Scottish football and as a national association if the leagues demand a change should be making representations to UEFA/ FIFA about picking a time that supports Scottish football.

  6. maybe it was ever thus. However, if anything should be setting of the alarm bells in Nyon it is the desire of a player to leave Celtic to play for Southampton. Don’t get me wrong. A fantastic piece of business. But really, the mediocrity of the English riviera instead of the iconic Celtic?!! Its depressing. Having said that, it must alarm Spanish fans that their players are being enticed to the EPL. When will this bubble burst? Inflated transfer fees and wages surely cannot continue forever.

I totally sympathise with supporters who are inconvenienced by Saturday evening kick offs. However if and when we join the gravy train, the 50 mill plus annual TV bung will see us gladly play games at 4 o’clock on a Tuesday morning.

Telly money is in many ways an evil necessity.

  9. Its not just the purchase price of any new players, its the wages as well. When you buy lads like Balde & Virgil on 4 yr deals their wages over that period becomes a contingent liability. I have no doubt that we are still paying a big chunk of Bangura’s wages even though he is out on loan. Some of the Vic money is likely to go on extending the contracts of existing players, incl Stokes & perhaps even Hoops. Buying players for 2 or 3 million is high risk stuff, I can see Lenny going for “Loans” more then straight purchases. p.s. Posters are liberally throwing millions around,eg We already have spent 4 million, does anyone really know how much Virgil & Balde actually cost.

It will continue as long as the symbiotic relationship between the EPL and Sky continues. Or until people become bored by football on TV. BT arriving on the scene may have some effect but it’s a hard nut to crack.

marrakesh- the obscene money in the EPL justifies the buggerin’ about with k/off times [possibly].

Opinion on 5:15 is favourable to a lunchtime KO, mixed opinion locally and all bad for long distance supporters. More notice is a must

  23. Seems like the greatest league in the world is probably dictating what our start times will be for the ole telly. Even though the premier league will not be playing they sound like they want to promote the championship ahead of the SPFL and with no objections from north of the border due to the disarray which is the newly formed league.

The question remains also if the tv deal was done with the SPL, should we not be able to tear up the old contract and shop it elsewhere?

A lot of people would like to see a Celtic TV channel with some clout, so what is to stop us from partnering with a BT or Al Jazeera to give it the needed clout and we can tell SKY, the EPL or whomever to go and whistle for it!

  27. KO times…..

‘Live’ games were always going to be at times other than 3pm on a saturday. Lots of people don’t like noon ko’s. This might or might not be better or worse.

Wanyama/Southampton……sounds like a step down. But I assume it is a major step up in his wages. Sure, he’d have gone to spurs or liverpool had they made a bid for him, but they didn’t. He is going there both for the money, but also the xposure and the chance of a move to a bigger epl club.
