Pressure applied successfully by Celtic

300

Ryan Christie is back to his very best.  His movement, vision and assists are a significant reason Celtic have scored so freely in recent weeks.  Added to the form of Callum Mcgregor, Albian Ajeti, Jeremie Frimpong and Olivier Ntcham, and Celtic have the basis of a dangerous team.

I had no complaints about Livingston’s penalty, defenders tuck their arms in when blocking inside the box and Kris Ajer could have done likewise.  No complaints either about the penalty Christie claimed 40 seconds earlier; no player tucks their arms in after they are on the ground.  Responding to going behind by scoring twice in six minutes is the mark of champions.

The second Livingston goal and the surrender of territory in the closing moments of the game were more troubling.  There was a bit of movement on the ball but it did not get close to Vasilis Barkas’ post.  It was saveable.  Still, the keeper would be entitled to ask why Serrano was given so much time and space.

Having conceded an unfortunate goal that brought Livi to within another pot shot of taking a point, a team at the bottom of the league should never have got near our six yard box in the closing stages of the game.  Their chance in added time would have been a goal were it not for the fact that this was clearly substitute Pignatiello’s first time attempting to header a football.  So far, defensive fragilities have ‘only’ cost us Champions League qualification but the bill will grow if we continue to offer up so much space in the final third.

Friday’s article, Applying and Coping with Pressure, discussed what impact the potential of Celtic going top of the table on Saturday would have on Newco ahead of their visit to Easter Road on Sunday.  Having given themselves a chance to ‘go 11 points clear of Celtic’ last month, Newco are only a point ahead having played one game more after yesterday’s draw against Hibs.

Neil Lennon and the Celtic players have seen this movie before.  They know how to win leagues, uniquely so, in Scotland.  Coping with reversals and exploiting opportunities is the attribute of the aforementioned champions.

  1. If you could remove Boli’s pace and give it to Taylor we would have a very good Left Back, at the same time, if you could remove Taylor’s technical ability and football brain and give it to Boli we would have have a very good Left Back

It’s funny that both of their deficiencies is what the other one has in abundance

  2. Greg Taylor is 23 in a few weeks. He’s older than Kris Ajer, Jeremie Frimpong and Odsonne Edouard.

I think some of the posters have him down for a school leaver given his size and baby chops :)

I am not Lennys agent but I trust in him. I trust him more than the keyboard experts.

I have merely pointed out that Lenny has a huge volume of information available to him that we don’t have even knowledge of. Some of this is being kept secret from the media.

A lot of online pundits base their judgement on Daily Record and Sun reports and Twitter rumours. They dont have the knowledge even if they are smart.

Lennon tries to do the difficult task of speaking to the support via the MSM who twist and spin his words in negative reporting

Neil Lennon as a player played over 600 games for 7 clubs and N Ireland and he has managed for 10 years at 3 clubs (Celtic twice). He is experienced and proven. He is not everyones cup of tea but I trust him as he is best placed and has more information than anyone.

I would wager that Lenny could explain his thinking that he would demolish a lot of the criticism of his selection and tactics.

I think we’ll agree to differ. You’re talking about a manager who recently played a European home tie without a striker while he had two on the bench. Unsurprisingly, Celtic failed to score as many goals as our opponents. You’re talking about a manager who, after constant appeals from the support and a 1-2 defeat at home to Sevco on 29 December last eventually played with two strikers up front and won the league with a team that played scintillating football and opened up a 13 point gap and a 25 goal lead on goal difference from the team in second place. Fast forward to this season. We stutter, we stumble, we change our formation for every game, we change our players for every game, we score 5 goals in Dingwall, we make 4 changes for next game. We play with one striker, two strikers, no strikers, one striker, two strikers. We left a huge left side defensive gap against Ferencvaros and went a goal down from a shot from distance. On Saturday, we left a huge central defensive gap and lost a similar goal from a shot from distance. Our midfield are not organised for defensive duties. They do not assist the defence. Our captain struggles manfully but those with clear eyes can see that his best days are behind him and he now is a weakness in the team. We do not press the opposition but invite them onto us hoping they will make a mistake and we can attack them. We have conceded 5 goals in 7 domestic games. I don’t think we conceded 5 goals after Christmas domestically when we were terrifying teams and scoring for fun. At the moment we are getting away with it. We haven’t been at Aberdeen, Livingston or Easter Road. These are grounds that we can struggle at. We are just happy that Sevco have struggled there although they won narrowly at Aberdeen. We have yet to prove ourselves. You say Neil has all the information. I ask when is he going to use it to positive effect because I’m not really seeing it. Like everyone else I want us to win every game, every trophy but I realise we have to be better than the opposition to do it. I live in hope from game to game that the manager will put out a good team, that the coaching will improve and that we’ll win with a few goals to spare. I think we’ll be looking for a new manager before Christmas.

So, maybe not all that relevant in the present circumstances?

  8. Big Wavy…we see things differently, that’s all. Happens all the time. But you’re wrong! 😊

  9. Would/Should we sacrifice a run in the Scottish Cup and the quad treble…to help ensure the 10….for me…that’s a hard no.

Also, am curious as to why we would need to sell to balance the books when we fail in Europe…the same books that, we are told, don’t depend on that particular income stream…mmm

  10. Not read back so hopefully not covering old ground. Read earlier Celtic have missed out to Notts Forrest to signing an Aberdeen player, all I can say to that is thank fcuk for that.

  11. TheLurkinTim,

Not being in the ECL makes us less attractive to guys on the up like Eddie, who want to develop against better players than Power, Jack and Andrew Considine I’m afraid…

    I think Eddie’s for the off. :(

Hopefully, as per DD, his Scottish girlfriend doesn’t want to leave the country…yet

  14. Thelurkintim,

Never could the lad fill the Hoops. I usually go with the flow when we sign players but not this dude, seen eastenders RIP him a new one last 2 seasons. Sadly not for us

I rate them all going forward, yes Calmac was good but he cant tackle as i said before we need a Barry Robson type player to many the same in the midfield.

  20. Celtic and Aberdeen each fined £30k with £22k of it suspended for coronavirus breaches. Seems like clubs are responsible for the misdeeds of players that occur in their own time.

  21. Gene…there’s probably some obscure fine print that says…hammer everyone but The Rankers whenever we can get away with it….I hope we have grounds for appeal;-))

  22. Inevitably there will be more footballers catching the virus as it spreads throughout the population. The next few weeks will be interesting.

  23. Although I don`t know what he is like in `real life`, I find it very easy to dislike Ryan Kent. Recently, though, another contender has come into the frame. I give you Scott Arfield. In fact, right now, with his pathetic , celebratory salute, I think I dislike him even more than I do Kent.

  25. `Celtic and Aberdeen each fined £30k`

What, precisely, did the Clubs do —or fail to do — that warranted these fines?
