Principled resignations, ASA withdraw adjudication

1739

I cannot fathom why someone would leak their intentions to quit as chairman of a football club.  Either Walter Smith is sufficiently alarmed by the conduct of his club to resign, or he should be busy working to resolve matters.  Leaking that he intends to resign will surely only add to the nonsense that surrounds the club.

Some will believe that Smith, who accepted the position as chairman of Rangers International when season tickets went on sale in May, can shuffle of the scene now 34,000 tickets have been sold.  Shareholder votes will determine the future of the club, in this instance, the identity of the chairman has little reach beyond parting fans with their cash.

Some investors may consider a more immediate problem is why the club are burning a hugely disproportionate amount of cash to secure promotion from the third tier of Scottish football, and why a management structure is not in place to deploy resources more effectively.

In light of Francisco Sandaza’s off-the-cuff comments to Tommy in Glasgow, and his subsequent dismissal by Rangers International, we urge Mr McCoist to be more cautious than he was after his team’s spirited, but ultimately fruitless, performance in Forfar on Saturday.  It would be unfortunate if McCoist transgressed a condition of employment and suffered accordingly.

Advertising Standards Authority ruling withdrawn

It doesn’t rain but it pours.  The Independent Review Process of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has looked into the ASA’s recent, and widely reported, ruling on Rangers International’s claim on football titles won by a liquidated club. The Review found that “it was a procedural flaw for the ASA to have relied on an extract only of a report sent to it by the advertiser”.

Further, the review process ruled that “there was also the risk of a substantial flaw of adjudication in the distinction that had been made between ‘club’ and ‘company’, especially in the light of previous ASA decisions about companies that change hands and the circumstances in which the new company could or could not trade off the reputation of the old company”.

The Chairman of the ASA, Lord Smith of Finsbury, as decided to reopen the ASA’s investigation into the case and to withdraw the published adjudication, which favoured the advertiser.  Withdrawing this adjudication does not infer that a different outcome will subsequently be reached.  To use a football analogy, it’s half time and they’re all square.

An interesting, and potentially critical part of the story, is that after the initial ASA decision was issued, the club’s web site noted that their submission to the process included information that a “panel of the London Stock Exchange” supported their claim.

The Stock Exchange subsequently appeared surprised at this assertion, so much so that the club promptly withdrew the claim from the web article.

“You’re history, that’s what you are, na na na na”.

I have just read the Celtic statement again, and would urge the GB to ensure H&S regulations are adhered to ….. 190 seats damaged by our own support is not good ….. The leadership of the GB need to restore a safe environment within, and for, their members….

Cheers mate, I really don’t think that guys laterally moving, in diametrical directions, in alternative rows, will present such a load on the structural steels that they will get too stressed or go into harmonic meltdown. I’d find it most concerning if Celtic PLC really believed that too. If they did believe that then as a matter of extreme urgency I would suggest they consider investing is seismic dampers to accommodate an all-stadia huddle. Also I’d be calling in the Co-op insurance rep and asking him to do a review of the PLC’s public liability insurance, very toot-sweet too.

When CQN posters resort to calling or inferring other posters with alternative views to their own ‘Huns’ .. I generally ignore them. Weak , easy cry that masks the need to debate. Almost always a cheap shot. The blog deserves better.

Interestingly same posters can be found fawning over real , self declared Huns like Edwardrus. Unfathomable.

You are involving yourself with politics with your continual references to the ‘left wing’ in your posts over the last week.

It is not a crime to be left wing – if you don’t want to discuss politics it is best not to bring the subject up.

  19. Green Brigade- damaged seats-solution – take the seats out-have a lateral dancing and singing area. Celtic PLC need to find a place in Celtic Park for all Celtic supporters Green Brigade and thems grandchildren and all.

Yes I know that but what did it have to do with Celtic FC? Because Celtic at the boardroom level was opposed to the invasion, Celtic got involved in politics as a club, so can they really be too surprised if some of their supporters follow their example and protest about invasions they don’t take kindly to either?

Ive watched games from all over the world for decades. Some countries have stadia which were built in the 50s and are subjected to extreme stresses and tensions by packed crowds moving laterally, jumping in unison and on a fortnightly basis.

Have a look at any Boca Juniors game where youll see 20000 on a two tier steep standing terrace, constantly bouncing like crazy, but obviously not contravening Argentinian Construction H and S laws. It makes the GB look like pass the parcel in a nursery. Turkey Brazil and Greece are similar.

I have a sneaking distrust of PL and I cant help think he’s got another agenda here.

Lots of GB debate, thank goodness we are not ignoring it what with all the other interesting/entertaining events elsewhere.

My belief is that the Celtic board are protecting The Club in a very difficult period in our history. There are a lot of threats from the hurting establishment club support, especially those in administrative positions which could prevent Celtic operating effectively and thus stretching our advantage.

The GB need to behave better, almost all of us agree on this. The board want to minimise threat. A compromise will be reached. Let’s support the efforts toward that goal rather than sniping at each other.

Let’s stick together, solve our ‘little local difficulties’ and enjoy the entertainment being provided at both Celtic Park and elsewhere.

I was at Willo ‘s debut for Aberdeen on Saturday.. Before heading to Loch Lomond football festival at Stirling Uni with my boys club team,

I have to say I have never watched a better debut in my 40 of years of attending professional matches. He was superb. Other Ex Celt Barry Robson was also excellent but Willo Flood stole the show. If he continues in the form he showed on Saturday he’ll be lifting POTY at the end of the season…

Maybe Celtic was just too big for him at the point he joined us?

  33. Living_in_the_Love_of_the_Commons_People on

I’d wager that ONE visit of the deid-co huns laid to waste a larger proportion of Paradise than an entire season of Green Brigade jumping aboot. Not to say that excuses the damage to the seats, but when taken into such perspective it obviously tells a story of other influences at work conspiring to silence Section 111.

I also noted the timeline that the local gutter media were running the GB section closure long before the Club published their statement, a rather embarrassing outcome in terms of fan communication and PR.

Lets hope the issue can still be resolved as soon as possible, and we will see their fine atmosphere and unique banners back at the stadium where they belong. That way tonydonnelly67 can cease to be affronted and offended by them.
