Priority now to stop things getting worse

357

There is usually a fair amount of hysteria after a Celtic defeat, sometimes after a draw, but the reaction since Saturday has largely been grounded in measured concern.  Even in the darkest days of the 90s, when Oldco Rangers were at their peak, we could always lay a glove on them.  It was bad.

The question is, what now?  We won eight out of nine domestic games going into the weekend but the manner tightness of several of those wins did not inspire, were it not for late goals against St Johnstone and Dundee United, your worries would be significantly greater today.

Priority when you suffer a bad defeat is to stop things from getting worse.  That means going to Aberdeen on Sunday and winning.  It is not self-flagellation to say we need this game at Pittodrie.  We need to go to one of the best teams in the league and get a win.

We endured many bad results in the 90s, but, if you are old enough, you will remember how there would usually be a backlash to a Celtic defeat.  Whoever we played next saw the consequences of all that pain.  We need to get in touch with that sentiment on Sunday.  Use the pain.

Too many on here had SD down as the Messiah with no analysis of what we could do and what he couldn’t.

We needed a blood and snotters CB willing to mix it with all comers.

He has that in his locker but he is limited in other aspects.

He most certainly cannot win the league on his own.

We are fragile in defence but our biggest issue is the MF.

Currently SB is doing a SPL farewell tour so that they all can have a kick at him.

We still have a VW sized hole and we have made no efforts to fill it.

CMcG is a squad level player who can get us a goal.

ON is wasting away in front of our eyes — real talent on the slide.

RC is a promising talent who is currently taking his coaching from his father and Hollywood — not a pretty sight.

TR has been “NWonV” for the past year — Not Wanted on Voyage.

DT is a quality MF player who needs a quality MF to make the most of his talent. I wonder how he rates the coaching at CP?

IS is warming the bench when we need new blood / energy on the park — Why?

We are spending money to keep in with agents — 15 months of wastage produced Saturday’s shambles.

Come and join us but lose one league game to them in any season and we’ll call for you to be sacked.

Simplistic and silly comment and you know it.

Covid had a major bearing on Saturdays result as it will do throughout the season, we are at the mercy of a Pandemic and the Track & trace app. Strangely Rangers are the only team in the league not to be affected by Covid so far, maybe the Donald kissed them the vaccince ?

We are on the same page – Celtic winning the league is my only ambition

Time will tell but April/May will be here soon enough – not winning 10 will turn me drink

We are certainly in for a challenge this Season, & we need to

    be up for it.

MadMitch says,I will end with a question — do you think we will win the league this season with the current manager and coaching staff?

Time will tell MadMitch, we all know the League destination this Season, is not a far gone

conclusion @ present, even Gerrard knows that, so it’s not all doom & gloom. HH & keep

the faith, in NFL we trust.

  6. P67 — your comment piece would suggest that the suits are starting to get worried.

Far too late but at least they are starting to understand the issues we face.

The problem is they caused them.

NL should never have been asked to manage the club permanently.

He should never have been asked to manage the club a second time.

He had given too much in the past and we have a duty of care to anyone we want to employ.

He would never turn us down so we are abusing his loyalty.

And to give him a coaching staff of the quality of JFK / WGS’s son / stiffs from the past is criminal.

DD — recently departed coach not Irish Raj — made a difference when he was here.

He actually did his job rather than phone it in as is happening now.

He alone was not enough but it was a start.

    Huge change is needed.

The Irish Raj loves shooting the breeze with other managers / coaches so it should not be too difficult to phone in some re-inforcements.

  9. Fellas,

Please, please, please stop putting Kris Ajer into midfield. He’s been schooled as a football playing CH for years now and has done enough there to have some big uns look at his developing story. Like everyone else his development appears to be stalling but the answer won’t be pushing his languid frame into midfield to join the posse of slow-moving ball.

I had hopes for Eboue and I had hopes for Soro but they came and went and if we are to play a DM there he needs to be bigger, faster, younger and more technically gifted than a fading Scott Brown (who just glides around the middle in an equally undefined manner doing his best).

These midfield questions have been around longer than time itself it feels…

The support can’t support, he’s got to solve it himself and no amount of internet angst changes anything.

  12. Madmitch……..Interesting you mention Damian Duff in your post and his loss to the coaching staff. I presume he was an offensive coach and with huge experience working under Mourinho, Dalglish, Hodgson and Trapattoni. Do we we have an offensive coach at the club? Celtic played their best attacking football in the second half of last season. Neil and John Kennedy were defensive players.

Yeah HankRay, we can also switch to 4-4-2 or even 3-4-3 or even 4-3-3 during matches, & when ever

the shape of the team, requires us to do so in certain matches.

Damian Duff is now with the Ireland International setup, however the FAI are in a mess @

So he would probably come back to us, if we ask him.

We certainly do miss him, that’s for sure.

  18. I feel the malaise at Celtic is due to Money,

The players always talk about money. The lack of team spirit is typical of disgruntled players, resenting others getting money for example Duffy on an EPL wage. I wonder if they didn’t receive their full bonus last season for the League as it wasn’t a full season.

Is it N’tchan, Ajer. Christie all unhappy at being denied a move?, are others not happy with new contract offers.

To be honest with you Big Wavy, I’m not a fan of KA’s style of defending, he grapples with

opposition players too many times for my liking. He can be more useful moving forward

from midfield, & he can also pick out passes as well for example the ball through to Leigh

on Saturday, & the ball to Ajeti when he scored the other week there. HH

  20. AKWB1888………….The ROI have completely changed their style of football playing a tidy passing game and creating lots of chances, problem is putting the ball in the net, but that will come i imagine. No doubt Damian Duff is making a difference being the most experienced on the coaching staff. Back to the Hoops, who can tell?

“Could you stop trying to build an alternative reality based on snide comments and the reminiscences of Brighton fans.”

    ——————————————-

Nothing alternate about that reality. The Brighton fans opinion of Shane co-exists alongside the various Celtic fans opinions all the way from “he’s a donkey” (based on our hurt from Saturday) through “he’s a limited player” right through to “He’s an experienced International player still capable of playing in EPL defences”.

These may not be your “reality” but there’s a lot of wiggle room to be had between your reality and the actual real world.

    ——————————————————————–

“I will end with a question — do you think we will win the league this season with the current manager and coaching staff?”

Yes- I think we will win with the current staff and/ or with a change of staff.

Now, if I may pose a similar question to you. How did you think the 2019/20 league would end in the days immediately after 29th December 2019?

  22. BIG WAVY on 19TH OCTOBER 2020 4:09 PM

Duff left to be closer to his young family.

    That ship has sailed.

Yeah probably so the media might say, however the ship could re-sail, back

to the port of CP, for Damian-D. After all who wants to be around the FAI

@ present, which is corrupt & falling apart, & we have got problems. & also

it’s not like Ireland is 1,000’s of miles from Glasgow, one can jump onto an

Airplane & be in Dublin in less than half an hour from Glasgow/Edinburgh

Airport. If I was Damian, I would give said offer, serious thought. HH

  23. SFTB,

Duffy is a square peg in a round hole. For both Celtic & Brighton currently but maybe not internationally (don’t watch enough). Excels where teams are under constant pressure.

He’s neither sheidt or the messiah.

Just a very strange signing to me given our needs. I feel for him as he is wilting under the pressure of trying out those long passes to the wing backs he can’t muster.

    HH fella.

  24. BW @ 4.21

We needed a bit of muscle / grunt at CB.

Two years ago it was going to be SMcK.

    Then we turned to SD.

Makes sense to me but get him to do the grafting and get someone else to do the 60M passes.

  25. some of the worse games I have watched celtic play can be narrowed to two areas. Sometimes due to tactics and other due to bad luck (injuries, covid).

Central defense – early in the season we lost preventable goals due lack of areal power in our center partnerships. Since then we have brought in Duffy and since he came in Julien has been injured and Biton COVID. We can fix this foundational issue with Julian, Ajer and Duffy. Laxalt will help – all we need is continuity there. – something we have not had this season. A MASSIVE FACTOR. I want to add that Barkas looks like a mistake so far.

Up front – how many times will Lennon play the wrong type of player up front on their own. As single striker strategy needs a player who can hold the ball up and allow the midfield to drive past. he has tried wee Mikey, Klimala, Christie – this is not their asset and it has been a shambles. Sorry but this is Lennon ego getting in the way of sense.

When we don’t have that player available, play 4-4-2. When we do have that player available play 3-5-2 or variation with single striker.

The team has been unsettled this season due to covid and injury – I cut Lennon slack for this but I don’t want to hear excuses – players don’t want to be here, we have a mole, players on international etc etc..

have our standards really dropped that far? I’m worried about the backroom and board!

  26. HANKRAY on 19TH OCTOBER 2020 4:16 PM

No doubt Damian Duff is making a difference being the most experienced on the coaching staff. Back to the Hoops, who can tell?

HankRay, it’s worth a try. The problem with the ROI style of play @ present, is that they

don’t have a natural Striker/Spearhead in their Team. Too many draws & narrow defeats.

They need to find, more natural strikers. As I’ve said the FAI who runs the ROI Setup, is

in a complete mess @ present, that’s coming from ‘ex’ players & pundits over in Ireland,

& is a fact. It’s corrupt to the core, & it needs big changes. HH

  27. The moral of the story is don’t put your happiness in the hands of overpaid sportspeople who don’t give a sh*t about you or your families or about a football club who play in the backwater that is Scottish football…

Some do care, Lenny cares, Scott Brown cares (I assume James Forrest and Callum McGregor care) and I know for a fact Shane Duffy cares

Paul’s article a few weeks back on the importance of Scott Brown is becoming more and more relevant

    🍀

  28. Por Cierto- from earlier, I disagree my friend, get Turnbull in the team, the Brown, McGregor, Ntcham midfield very rarely functions well,it might be the making of him,The team looks stale, and we need to freshen up the MF IMO HH

  29. Big Wavy…….,.,.,.,Funny how Shane’s passing stats in the recent Internationals were excellent.

  30. One of the big problem is there is little or no service to our CF.

They can run all the channels they want but the ball isn’t coming.

Calmac has to get forward more and link up with CF/CFS.

Plenty of questions next three league games are huge.

  31. SFTB @ 4.16

At lease we know where you stand — blinkers on living off past glories.

Last season after the 29th Dec shambles we had issues regarding the defeat but we also had the memories of the earlier league win and the good football we had played in the EuL.

    This season we have neither.

Just the memories of some absolute stodge / 45 minutes against Hibs and a CL failure.

Consequently Saturday’s performance was a shock but not a surprise.

We have no leadership — PL is a bonus thief phoning it in.

DD / Irish Raj has no interest in our performance only our potential as EPL candidates.

We have no coaching talent worthy of note.

And we have a squad at war with itself.

This day has been 27 months in the making.

However if you think we can still win the league with no changes to the coaching tea then I would suggest you are what an optimist’s optimist would call a mental optimist from Sunny Jim’sville..

  32. BourneSoupReicipe:-Sevco have even got an offensive kit man.

    Yeah the wee Rockweiler, woof-woof.

  33. something aint right – Lennon is avoiding shouting/coaching at the players during play. Its like he’s walking on egg shells with them. Many times during the game, he mumbled frustrations to himself and sat with arms folded. This in contrast to last season where he would be on the touchline driving them on.

Also, Ntcham is a waste of a jersey. if he doesn’t get celtic or scotland by now he never will. His lack of effort is a disgrace to all before him.

The jersey is shrinking to fit inferior players and our manager is accepting this.

Get the backbone of the team fit – and start playing Soro and Turnbull.

If Lennon has to go – I’d give it to Kennedy and Strachan
