Prism of failure gives King chance to bring Newco down

680

After the failure to launch season ticket renewals at Ibrox in the wake of the Ramsdens Cup final last week, by Friday morning marketing staff, PR people, web designers and printers would all have been primed to press the button this morning, after the anticipated humbling of Dundee United in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Things started to go wrong later Friday, when Dave King popped up with an intervention.  King, who was a director of Original Rangers in the years up to and including their liquidation, appears intent on sending the Newco Rangers to an equally liquidated state.  Should we erect a statue to this guy?

For those of you in doubt, his latest questions to Newco Rangers board are priceless:

“Does the board agree it is unfair to ask fans to buy season tickets before they consider the business review?”

No club in the country is asked to submit business plans to supporters before asking them to renew season tickets.  What’s more, there is an assumption by King that spending plans should be expansive, exactly as they were at Original Rangers, when King & co presided over the club’s failure.

Newco’s (even newer) management should be allowed to match expenditure with income.  This is the message that fans should be asked to back, the days of empire are over.  Anyone who tries to undermine a breakeven strategy at Newco is practically ensuring another failure.

“Does the board agree that, given the present financial position of the club, it is appropriate to provide Ibrox Park and Murray Park as security against season ticket advances?”

This is an interesting one.  King suggests Newco offers Ibrox up as security (Murray Park is largely irrelevant).  If they are boxed into a corner and concede this one, those in a position to utilise that security, which in Dave King’s plan would be Dave King, would have an incentive to see Newco liquidated.

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it was in discussions to obtain finance that would be needed prior to the end of the current season?

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it provided public assurances to the fans that the club had sufficient cash to last until the end of the current season?”

King has been there before and will know more than most how financial forecasting works; there is a clue in the name, it’s forecasting.  If a company seeks contingency borrowing for less than 5% of its expenditure (or 2 weeks costs), earlier projections could not have been that far off.

None of this matters right now.  Newco’s manager failed to win two hugely important games and that is the prism through which fans will evaluate the performance of their club.  King could accuse them of being responsible for his own role in Original Rangers liquidation and some would believe him.

Season ticket sales are the most fundamental aspect to the health and wellbeing of every Scottish football club.  This is true even at Celtic, with or without Champions League revenue.  Ticket sales will have a greater impact on Celtic’s season ahead than Champions League qualification.

Right now some hedge funds and the Easdales own Ibrox.  Ideas of bully them into submission will fail, although it will be enormously entertaining.  Go for it, Dave, we’re 100% behind you.

“King suggests Newco offers Ibrox up as security ”

Give it a few days and he will saying that he will settle for that strip of turf that has been trimmed from the pitch.

In fact, he may be claiming it was sectioned off because the board had promised it to him

  2. Dave King is acting on behalf of 2 prominent supporters, they want the club for next to nothing ie a liquidated club. They can’t be seen to bring the club down. One is a well known Glasgow nightclub owner and the other lends his name to a bus company in Hamilton. Allegedly.

  3. I enjoyed the semi finals this week not just because all was laid bare re RIFC 2012, but because it highlighted some serious talent that has emerged as a consequence of Armageddon ( youth has been given it’s chance as a result of reduced incomes ).

I’m a regular at Pittodrie so know about Pawlett, Jack, Logan, McGinn etc but it was good to see some of the young DUFC guys , Armstrong, McKay Stevens, Gauld, Ciftci and from St Johnstone the highly impressive Stevie May. All of these guys are superior to what passes for. ‘Top £5 k/week players’ at Mordor but are also guys who offer options to Celtic in the summer. Griffiths has proven that you can find talent close to home if you look .

I don’t mind who leaves as long as we retain the recruitment skills to repeat the process of having more plus’s than minus’s in the very tricky transfer market Celtic have to operate.

Players come and go, and it’ll no doubt be another struggle to get past the Murrayfield

    qualifiers.

Also, every managerial vacancy in England will be getting filled by Neil Lennon.

I think the Sevconians are in for a shock if they expect the top league to be the same as the one they exited with Rangers.

I think you make a valid point about not necessarily having to look further afield for new talent.

I’m not saying that Balde, Pukki etc are poor footballers but I do think we could have got players of similar ability at a fraction of the price closer to home.

Maybe if the footballing authorities, and other clubs, were unequivocal and forthright in staing that liquidation results in the death of a club and the loss of its history, then Sevco and its followers wouldn’t be so cavalier about repeating the process.

  13. CultsBoy, its not just about takin’ the piddle out of the Contraband that is Sevco, but its also a 2 fingers to the Establishment, the Media & anyone else that will move heaven & earth to force a narrative upon you & I that the Zombie club is the same club as the rotten carcus that we witnessed the death of 18 – 20 months ago. All this while at the same time doing everything within their power to hurt our club, Celtic F.C.

2 weeks ago we had to read a report in the Daily Rot (I believe it was) that should Hibs go down along with Hearts then the Scottish Championship will be the best Division in Scottish football.

Sorry to inform ye pal, but its our job to continually remind them of their place within game, for they ain’t gonna do it themselves. “Glib & Shameless Liar” is not a description that should reserved for Dave King but rather for everyone involved with that club & the SFA.

I agree, id rather an update on some of our players future.

    The living wage update ?

Green brigade having section next season ?

Resolution 12 update.. Celtic charity update… List goes on.

Seems like we are hoping they die again so we can save another bit of money for few more seasons.

In saying that a wee update on them does lift the spirts at times.

Always said that CQN appeals to a broad church. People who can analyse what is being written/said, weigh up the arguments and make up their own minds. The good thing about interviewing soup takers like Nevin is that (as BRTH pointed out the other day on this blog) their contributions are now subject to public scrutiny and obviously in the public domain.

SO well done you Bhoys because as a result of his failure to condemn the massed ranks of the Nuremberg choir with their toxic repertoire he has been exposed for the charlatan that he so obviously is.

He said that he would expose sectarianism wherever he came across it and he didn’t on Saturday thus demonstrating that his principles are up for sale to the highest bidder. Having said that in the interests of all that is good and holy in this world Le Petit Merde is a bridge too far.

Whilst ruminating on the above and blog discussions with Tricoloured Ribbon re Rory Mc Ilroy what about a CQN “they took the soup” list much like the always rivetting consigned to the Crypt from Not the View. I’ll start. Top Three.

It can be strange sometimes to see the connections today’s world throws up. Who would have thought, a priori, that in times of dire need both Dave King and Oscar Pistorius would be represented by the same lawyer, namely Barry Roux. And it doesn’t end there. Close scrutiny of the murder trial in South Africa suggested that the verdict pivoted on whether Pistorius was wearing his prosthetics, as he claimed, at the time of the shooting. A point now conceded by the prosecution. Which now leaves us with a situation, unusual to say the least in a murder case, where the accused submits, as his defence, that…..he didn’t have a leg to stand on.

And then there is Dave King!

I did not read the article you allude to but I would suggest that they are living in the past in the same way they cling on to the notion that having the reincarnation of oldco back in the top division would be good for Scottish Football.

Yes it is true that seeing the names of oldco, Hearts and Hibs would at first glance suggest that it would make for a good League. However, you and I both know you need to look beyond a name. You have to look at the quality of Players are plying their trade at the Clubs, how many have to look at the quality of Football. Exemplified by the result in Saturday’s Semi-Final.

I predict that sevco will not find it as easy as they did this season when they move up a Divison next year.

    Keep the Faith!

Re buying talent inside Scotland: Do we really want to be weakening the likes of Aberdeen, St Johnston or Dundee Utd? Would it really have suited our purposes to have Jackie MacNamara playing games like last weekend’s with an inferior team? purely concerning Celtic,I hate losing but I do like the fact that, although we were guaranteed the League, we were not guaranteed the win in any individual game.

  22. the long wait is over on

    On Nevin and Saturday-

I believe he said in the CQN interview that their TV booth is virtually soundproofed and therefore they rely , as he somewhat naively did with the incident involving us, in being fed information from those beyond the booth , through their earpieces.

If that is the case, and I’ve no reason to doubt it , then I don’t believe PN can be criticised for failing to comment on Saturday’s songbook.

Those who can be criticised are those who failed to report it to the studio for comment by PN and others.

No apologist for PN by any means but let’s pick our battles.

If I’m wrong on any of the above then I’m open to correction.

  25. Trouble is, where is the common sense rangers voice ? – it’s not sally and it can’t be any of their heroes because all the recent ones benefited from overspending and genuinely believed you could spend more than you have. So if you were a level headed season ticket purchaser, who is there to go to who is saying ‘ we will have to tough it out for 10 years ! We will have to play our way regardless of what league we’re in and our quality matches the money coming in’. Nobody is saying this because, either, there are normal intelligent fans who are too scared to speak up or none exist because they got used to winning by financial doping . The fact that King’s playground nonsense is getting airtime, let alone backing from Gough is testament to this, there is no intelligent reasoned voice coming from anywhere in the newco community. They don’t stand a chance.

  26. Here’s a thought..

If Celtic were to buy more home grown players from Scotland.. It strikes me as inevitable we would develop a very strong crossover with the national team.

I think this could be a good thing in terms of team identity/ bonding and a wider opening up of SFA skulduggery…

“The poor state of the playing squad will no doubt be used by the usurpers in the board battles but Dave King should remember that much of the 20 million he claims to have lost in the SDM years was because of spiraling players costs as Minty tried to match Celtic fivers with borrowed tenners. It would be extreme folly for R*ng*rs to try and spend their way towards success.

What R*ng*rs need is austerity combined with shrewd investment in the playing pool. Better a hungry youngster trying to make a name for himself than a painter and decorator on 10K a week clugging wee boys and greeting when one kicks him back”.
