Prism of failure gives King chance to bring Newco down

680

After the failure to launch season ticket renewals at Ibrox in the wake of the Ramsdens Cup final last week, by Friday morning marketing staff, PR people, web designers and printers would all have been primed to press the button this morning, after the anticipated humbling of Dundee United in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Things started to go wrong later Friday, when Dave King popped up with an intervention.  King, who was a director of Original Rangers in the years up to and including their liquidation, appears intent on sending the Newco Rangers to an equally liquidated state.  Should we erect a statue to this guy?

For those of you in doubt, his latest questions to Newco Rangers board are priceless:

“Does the board agree it is unfair to ask fans to buy season tickets before they consider the business review?”

No club in the country is asked to submit business plans to supporters before asking them to renew season tickets.  What’s more, there is an assumption by King that spending plans should be expansive, exactly as they were at Original Rangers, when King & co presided over the club’s failure.

Newco’s (even newer) management should be allowed to match expenditure with income.  This is the message that fans should be asked to back, the days of empire are over.  Anyone who tries to undermine a breakeven strategy at Newco is practically ensuring another failure.

“Does the board agree that, given the present financial position of the club, it is appropriate to provide Ibrox Park and Murray Park as security against season ticket advances?”

This is an interesting one.  King suggests Newco offers Ibrox up as security (Murray Park is largely irrelevant).  If they are boxed into a corner and concede this one, those in a position to utilise that security, which in Dave King’s plan would be Dave King, would have an incentive to see Newco liquidated.

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it was in discussions to obtain finance that would be needed prior to the end of the current season?

“Does the board agree that in the latter half of December 2013 it provided public assurances to the fans that the club had sufficient cash to last until the end of the current season?”

King has been there before and will know more than most how financial forecasting works; there is a clue in the name, it’s forecasting.  If a company seeks contingency borrowing for less than 5% of its expenditure (or 2 weeks costs), earlier projections could not have been that far off.

None of this matters right now.  Newco’s manager failed to win two hugely important games and that is the prism through which fans will evaluate the performance of their club.  King could accuse them of being responsible for his own role in Original Rangers liquidation and some would believe him.

Season ticket sales are the most fundamental aspect to the health and wellbeing of every Scottish football club.  This is true even at Celtic, with or without Champions League revenue.  Ticket sales will have a greater impact on Celtic’s season ahead than Champions League qualification.

Right now some hedge funds and the Easdales own Ibrox.  Ideas of bully them into submission will fail, although it will be enormously entertaining.  Go for it, Dave, we’re 100% behind you.

I see your point but if any signing makes us strong enough that we can beat any other Scottish side than we should make that.

You make a valid point. However, our priority is Celtic. We should be trying to find a balance between scouting abroad and developing the talent here in Scotland but in a way that doesn’t decimate any potential challenge from other clubs.

How many heroes riding a white steed have ridden to the rescue now?

Each one greeted with wide acclaim from fans and fawning media.

The road down south resembles a roller coaster as every rise in hope is followed by a steep fall in fortune, on and off the park.

It’s been Groundhog Day numerous times, numerous times, numerous……..

The only constancy has been Billy Bunter and his disappearing squad members.

He has been the hero of the peanut gallery who have staunchly supported his incompetent management because he is one of them and refuses to walk away while his fat compensation continues.

He has risen to hero status in the East End as well as he has ruined any chances they had to struggle on with numerous defeats in vital games, reckless spending on transfers and ruinous wages paid to mediocre players prepared to take the queen’s shilling.

Hopefully this pantomime will continue on it’s long run and provide numerous belly laughs to all football fans from Annan to Brora.

Houston, We Have An Integrity Issue

In his latest outburst against the Rangers board, Dave King made the statement that “we have an integrity issue.”

Which has reminded many fans of the judgement on Mr King by Justice Southwood in his recent tax case with the South African Revenue Service, where he pled guilty to 41 criminal counts of contravening the South Africa Income Tax Act and agreed to pay a fine of 80,000 Rand per criminal conviction or 3.28 million Rand in total.

Here is part of Justice Southwood’s judgement:-

[20] Mr. [Dave King] is a tall, slim man in his 50s. He appeared to be very confident and not in the slightest uncomfortable about giving evidence and being cross-examined. He is intelligent and articulate and appears to be well-versed in the intricacies of the financial world and the purchasing and selling of shares on the JSE. Notwithstanding these advantages he made a very poor impression as a witness. He is extremely arrogant and obviously thinks that whatever he says is so. It was demonstrated that he deliberately misrepresented the facts of the case to his legal representatives, to SARS in correspondence and at the section 74C enquiry and to the representatives and solicitors of the Y Trust. As his evidence progressed it became clear that he has no respect for the truth and does not hesitate to lie or at least misrepresent the facts if he thinks it will be to his advantage. There can be little doubt that on most occasions Mr. [Dave King] lied as he knew the correct facts and obviously decided to misrepresent these facts. In cross-examination Mr. [Dave King] often avoided giving a proper answer to the questions. Sometimes he simply ignored the point of the question and gave a long rambling answer. On other occasions he resorted to bluster or to attacking the integrity of the cross-examiner, accusing him of misrepresenting the facts to the court. He also attacked the integrity of the Commissioner’s attorney, accusing him of presenting facts to the court knowing them to be untrue. It is significant that the appellant’s counsel have not attempted to make anything of these allegations. They clearly consider that there is no merit in these allegations. We saw Mr. [Dave King] testify in chief and in cross-examination for four days and are unanimous in finding that he is a mendacious witness whose evidence should not be accepted on any issue unless it is supported by documents or

other objective evidence. It was remarkable that Mr. [Dave King] showed no sign of embarrassment or any emotion when he conceded that he had lied to the Commissioner in a number of his income tax returns. In our assessment he is a glib and shameless liar.

On this occasion, Dave King got it right when he said we have an integrity issue.

Indeed we do, Dave. Indeed we do.

To add to what has already been posted to you in response. I also agree but we may not necessarily be weakening Dundee Utd. and Aberdeen. If they have already successfully scouted and brought talent through their respective setups, would they not continue to produce more talent through their Clubs.

We ourselves have managed by and large to bring in and bring through talent to replace those that have left. Perhaps I should qualify this; I do accept that we have had failures as well on some of those that we have brought in. That’s the gamble but I do believe to a certain degree that football works in cycles.

  19. Here’s my view on cherry picking better players from other Scottish clubs..

It benefits the clubs we take from financially, it benefits player ambitions as we offer the best Scottich talent the opportunity to

Make their mark in Europe, it benefits Celtic as they have a greater idea what they are buying.

In short it sustains a Scottish football economy .

The same applies when bigger clubs come scouting our better players…

It’s interesting that so many Celtic minded personalities, and I use the term loosely, are accused of taking the soup.

In days, thankfully, gone by,those who did just that did so out of the direst of need.

It was about their survival, for them and their families.

I don’t think the same can be applied to well off people who just want to be better off.

They aren’t soup takers. Nor have they sold their soul.

They are prostitutes for a shilling who have as little respect for themselves as anyone else has for them.

Anyone else surprised that Celtic haven’t tied up any pre-contract players? We have lost a few players this season and recruited in the main poorly with the exception of VVD and Griffith’s. We have been pretty decent in recent years at tying up decent players on pre-contracts. I’m surprised we haven’t done so already for next season.

I would rather buy a player from a Scottish club who I know can do a job in our league than some foreign player who may or may not settle here. We have had our fingers burnt this season buying players from better leagues who don’t seem to be able to cut it in the Celtic side.

I always feel that Scottish boys give their all and if they have ability they are certainly great additions. Barry Robson was a perfect example. Not the greatest player in the world but gave us everything and had the bottle to score that penalty against Deidco.

A few players from our league could certainly step into our first team. I wouldn;t be against it.
