Prof Leitch: politicians are reason you ‘can’t go to Celtic Park’

697

I listened to a Scottish Rugby podcast with Jason Leitch, recorded earlier this week, where they discussed the reasons that appear to lie behind why the Scottish Government in their treatment of football is out of step with European countries, like Germany, France, Netherlands and others, but in-step with the Westminster Government.

Professor Leitch rhetorically posed the question you and I have discussed recently, “Why can I go to the pub and I can’t go to Celtic Park.”  Through analogy, he explained that the Government were able to permit some activities, not all.  That has never been in dispute, during a pandemic, you cannot allow all activities.

What has not previously been confirmed is why the Scottish Government has shadowed the (frankly abysmal) pandemic response of Boris Johnson’s Westminster government, instead of acknowledging the clear and undisputed scientific evidence that drives public policy among our European peers.  Professor Leitch placed responsibility for this squarely with his political masters:

“How you then make choices between sport, versus retail, versus hospitality; that comes down to decision making, by politicians, taking the best advice they can from the financial people, the public health people, the social policy people and making choices.”

Clearly the Scottish Government listens to financial, public health and social policy people before making decisions, so do Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, this allows them to act sincere, it does not make them any good.  But when Europe takes one path, which is consistent with science, and Scotland follows Westminster, which has led to some of the highest rates of mortality in the world in both Scotland and the UK as a whole, we are entitled to ask, what is going on?

They do not have a different virus in Dortmund than we have in Glasgow.  In both places, it spreads significantly more indoors than out.  It is inhibited by adherence to clear and monitored hygiene and distancing rules, like those in place at football games across the Continent, and it spreads where consistent enforcement of these rules is unmonitored – like pubs.  The difference is the politicians, not the virus.

I know this is ‘just’ football, and our consequences are nothing like the care homes fiasco, but government policy needs to shape up pandemic response in all areas.  It is not easy, but if decisions are too onerous for people in Edinburgh to get their heads around, stop following a clown in London and watch what is happening in Europe: fewer deaths, fewer infections, industry specific responses.

No doubt JimmyNotPaul, all the young Lads, who want to start the Season on the 24/10/20,

will all have to be tested, for we all know what, before they come into close contact, with

    their fellow colleagues/players.

Apparently, one can catch this virus, is if one is within close quarters, with an infected

person, in a confined Area, Car/Small Room/Cupboard/ etc-etc for fifteen minutes or

more, which apparently is the rule of thumb of said Scamdemic.

  2. So more blinkin international shenanigans this week…jaysus…

As for Saturday, play our best players in their best positions and we’ll win – Barkas, Frimpong, Julien, Duffy, Ajer, (Laxalt I presume), Ntcham. McGregor, Elyanoussi, Edouard (no idea what the scoop is) and Ajeti (if fit).

Utilise the Griff, Polish Paddy, Turnbull, Brown and Soro appropriately…

    No more dropouts please…

  3. I think Lenny will go with his 3 at the back. The problem there is Ajer is not the best on the left side.Think he will still go with it.Frimpong and Laxsalt will be the wing backs.Broony and Calmac in middle,Ajeti up front. That leaves a take your pick for another midfielder, and striker.Rogic not match fit.Whatever,Broony will need help in midfield.Huns will play 4 there.4-4-2from them. They would take the draw now.

Eddy should be fine,if no effects.Decisions,decisions.

The juniors held a vote and the clubs voted to start the season on the agreed date of Oct 24 th.

Wasn’t the Juniors – it was the newly formed West of Scotland League comprising many of the west based Junior teams. The West, East and South of Scotland Leagues are the pyramid below the Lowland League.

On Saturday the Lowland League plus the East of Scotland and South of Scotland Leagues started their season. The 9 teams you mentioned from an original list of 14 clubs have decided to withdraw from the WoSL leaving 58 teams going forward on the 24th October start.

  5. Shocking article from Jackson today in the Record.Total fantasy puff piece extolling why the Hun are so great this season, why we are so poor. That would be us,that if we win our game in hand would be top.Davis the best midfielder in Scotland,Kent sensational, and Tavernier the leading goalscorer.Oh ,and they are thriving with no crowd,we are struggling without one.

    Drivelpish of the highest order.

    Bada Bing.

Yeah it’s very good, indeed. I’ve got that exact same film on VHS Tape.

It was first screened back in the eighties (80’s) I recall.

Glass Half Full, that does not surprise Me, about the gobshite Hun media,

coming out with negative stories, about Ryan Christie, being unhappy

plying his craft with us, what a load of BS. You should boycott their pish,

& send them a bag of Onions, for this coming Saturday, along with Tissues,

to whipe away their moaning tears.

I’m also have a season ticket for Spartans and watch their home games when Celtic games (and Covid) allow.

I have been an advocate of the pyramid structure for many years as a way of teams across Scotland finding their true level.

In the east, teams like Kelty Hearts, Bonnyrig Rose and East Kilbride amongst others will likely replace some of the teams struggling in the lower reaches of SPFL. In time teams from the west such as Auchinleck and Pollock will do the same.

Also be ready for a European League based on a similar pyramid system. I have been saying so for years it’s only a matter of time. TV plus UEFA and the ‘bigger’ clubs will force the pace.

In say 10 / 20 years time I don’t think Celtic will be playing solely in Scotland.

  9. Here a fellow by the name of Andrew Murdoch, posted on YouTube, an over one hour

Film, entitled “Bithday Boys” (Bhoys) It’s basically about our Club’s Centenay Season

1988, with all the relevant clips, associated with said Season 1987/88. There is a

good interview with Caesar, & nearly all the players involved. Even Paul67, has a brife

say, on said film, stating he was twenty years of age back then, yeah, I was coming up

for thirty years of age back in 1988. Mark McGee, was saying that himself & Pat Bonnar,

will never go Fishing with Anton Rogan again. Because Anton does not have any patience,

& Anton also makes to much noise, which causes the Fish, to sped off @ 50 MPH down

stream. (LOL) Anyway Folks, it’s a very good & fond Film, down Memory Lane. Yeah we

Remember, with fond memories I recall. Check It Out Folks? Hail Hail.

  10. Paul 67,

I would never be so presumptuous to tell you what to write about on your own blog.

Respectfully could I ask for an article of where we are and where are we going. All business must have a contingency plan, what is ours. ?

Does the current ” upheaval ” in English football have any impact on us. ?

Would politicians make it difficult for us to leave Scottish football ?

What will Scottish football look like if this continues indefinitely ?

Is another share option likely ?

Can we afford to run both Parkhead and Lennoxtown as this crisis continues.?

What is the point of us having a costly rigourous testing regime if it fails every time there is an International game ( been under 21 games )

So many questions, and so few answers. Without giving away trade secrets, perhaps you could enlighten.

    Cheers and HH.

Elhamed now out of huns game , self isolating . We can’t afford to lose too many more for this game .

  12. Embramike. 10.40.

Yes, I agree, there are a few teams who would enhance the top leagues.

It’s still a self preservation society though and the way the pyramid is set up makes it difficult for the team’s you mentioned.

There should be at least one guaranteed place, rather than the potential safety net, of the play off, for the team that finishes bottom of Division 2

  16. As has been said countless times on here, Paul67 is good enough to give us this dear green space to talk about everything and anything, and especially Celtic. There is never any need of anyone simply insulting him (or anyone else for that matter).

Who is going to handle the pace of that Kent. Looks nippy – maybe wee Jeremy our best bet?

However, we wouldn’t want to blunt Jeremy’s attacking threat right enough, so we should perhaps turn the tables on that question – who would THEY have to employ to try to blunt the threat of wee Jeremy – Kent plus two others?

Should leave space for others (? Moi ) to attack.

  20. re THE THREE KINGS book.

I liked it, But there was nothing so “new” in it, more a collection of overlaps to dovetail the 3 mens backgrounds, and most of it is well known. Still it was good to refresh on their collective acheivements and thier deep respect of each other. The end chapters still had me reflective, the loss of giants for sure.

There was also a few facts that were just wrong.
