Promising second addition

146

A signing is never a signing until you see the player kick a ball for Celtic, but a second January addition is apparently going through a medical today.  Borussia Monchengladbach’s Czech striker Tomas Cvancara (25) would add significantly to our attacking powers.  So much so, that if he passes his medical (you know our injury luck this season), he is likely to feature at Tynecastle on Sunday.

The player shone in 18 months at Sparta Prague before earning a €10.5m move to Germany.  Two years on the fringes in Germany proceeded a six-month loan in Turkey, which ended earlier this month.  He last played on 4 December, so although he will hopefully be injury-free, it is unlikely he will be ready for a full 90 minutes.

A promising start as striker at Borussia ended when an ankle injury in January 2024 led to two-months on the sidelines.  After that, he was used mostly as a sub, not starting another Bundesliga game until October.  Appearances after the injury were mostly on the right wing.

If Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney can reconnect the player with his earlier form, he will thrive in the Scottish Premiership.  The recent stats are not flattering, but as you and I know, it is not the stats that is important, it is their reading.  Think Jota, who has hardly kicked a ball since Cvancara left Czechia.

At 6’ 3” he would also add a physical dimension missing from our play.  We know a few wingers who would welcome that kind of target to aim for.  As we discussed, believe nothing until you see him on the ball.

  1. Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government.

    Happy Wednesday!

  2. Outside of the stats which don’t make for good recent reading, is the off field issues. Hopefully at 25, we see a sensible player well aware that his career is on a precipice and is determined to do well.

Financially, it’s low risk for us. So welcome to Celtic, Tomas.

I’d be expecting more substantial investment on the squad this window.

  3. While the The Ragers swoop to bring in a clutch of Govan Galacticos, none with a blemish to their names, aw they kin report of the Sellik snoo igning is that his ex-team-mates wanted him blacklisted!

Couldnae gie these canutes a red neck with a blowtorch!!

Anyways, I like a touch of the ole Slav temperament; In Aussie fitba these lads rarely take a step back.

  4. “Czech striker Tomas Cvancara (25) would add significantly to our attacking powers. ”

    Widnae be that difficult …😉

  5. Enough ability to have a very decent scoring record in a better league than the SPL at a young age, a move to a bigger club and league that didn’t work out.

Young, hopefully hungry with something to prove and a career at a bit of a crossroads.

Goals from the right wing as well so a bit of flexibility and pace and technical ability. Hopefully a bit of a physical presence as well.

Nothing wrong with a bit of a flawed character, one for Martin’s man-management skills.

  6. A big lad like our Czech mate would help with defending corners which has been a fly in our Achilles Heel ointment, recently.

  7. I’ve been critical of our player trading, well my perception of it anyway.

    Relatively happy with the news.

    Thumbs up from me

  8. Yay, a striker. At long last.

    Tomas is tall & pacey.

He’ll add to our striking dept which is mediocre at the moment.

I’m hoping rather than expecting. We are where we are.

Our league’s not teeming with world beaters so as long as he’s competent he should make an impact.

    CH & RW now, please.

  9. The last time Martin O’Neil signed a former 6ft 3in £10m” flop ” turned out not too bad.

The stats were equally as bad, 3 goals in 38 games for Chelsea.

    Here’s hoping.

    HH.

  10. Paul is absolutely right that we won’t know how good he is until he he’s had a few games, but since a guy in form in the Bundesliga is out of our financial reach, someone with talent but lacking a recent run of games is the best we can hope for. Czech record was excellent.

The hun media are already trying to talk him down. Can we at least give the guy support? We need goals to win the league, strikers need confidence to score goals.

  11. btw, the supposedly toxic relationshop at Borussia seems to be – out with injury, then not getting game time. Complained and wanted to go out on loan. Criticised for saying this publicly.

To me it shows a player who didn’t want to sit back on a good salary, but who actually wanted to play football and improve as a player. Sounds like we are getting someone hungry to succeed. And if anyone is good at getting confidence back in players it’s MON.

This news has really lifted me. His pedigree and physical stature. The loan to buy is ideal. Also liked the selfie from the plane – his eyes suggested confidence and self-belief. Help us win this league Tomás!

  13. Welcome to Tomas Cvancara when he arrives

Signing for Celtic as a striker is a tough one

Hope he has the bollocks to make it, as its as much about mental strength as goals

  14. lets all do the huddle on

At 6’ 3” he would also add a physical dimension missing from our play

height and physicality dont necessarily go hand in hand.

bobo balde was 6 foot 6 but i could have taken him no bother 😁

    Bhoys Town @ 12:41pm.

With you re the talking down of our new striker

The movement to generate exclusively positive messaging guising as “momentum” is well underway

… with the Blue Broadcasting Corporation at the vanguard.

The blue bogeyman is in fact Wizard of Oz FC

    Loud, boastful, frightening projection.

    Nothing behind the curtain.

Publicly they’ll convey supreme confidence .. as always

    Privately?

… given their manager and ALL their players have NEVER executed a title race successfully

(Tav was part of a procession during Covid)

    … They’ll be bricking it.

Martin and our players have loads of experience of successful title races, BTW.

  16. We will see.Maybe not fit enough for Sunday though. We need somebody ready to rip up trees.

Do not be sitting in your Boardroom patting yourselves on the back.Get on those bloody phones, you incompetent tossers.

  17. B2B – GHF

I agree. I am far happier with our coaches and captain than I would be with theirs (for many reasons!). Bit the MIBs are still a worry, starting with a former Sevco player’s brother refereeing game v Hearts and a patron of The Crown bar on VAR. Dickinson has already given the tribute act at least 6 points they would not otherwise have got. We don’t just have Hearts to beat to win this title, we have the now re-energised establishment.

  18. Good afternoon from a rainy North Staffs.

Firstly thanks for the prayers and condolences for Lisa.

Welcome to Tomas – make yourself into a hero.

Second signing? – have I missed something

They’ll be on the 2.15 to Bologna

Airborne, 14:27. Hopefully our CEO and CFO are not on that flight and are concluding deals for players. Short flight and with an early ko tomorrow, it’s not as bad as it could have been, in preparation for Sunday.

  20. Welcome to the latest to pass through Parkhead’s Gates (in the right direction it must be said), Tomas Cvancara. Auchenleck hadn’t played a competitive game since December but they seemed pretty fit to me so no problems on that score. Match sharpness, wont quite be there, but hey, even injured players come back in good shape, most of the time. Even if he doesn’t start will still give all of us (okay maybe not ‘all’ of us) a boost, not to mention Martin & Co and their whole squad. As noted will help out in defence at set pieces, but more importantly will give better options to the likes of KT, Julliann & Donovan, Yang & Tounetki, and help the likes of Nygren, Hatate, Kenny and Engels, if the latter is still here. Hope, with the World Cup looming, and Japan playing Scotland in Glasgow Daizen can be persuaded to stay on for hopefully the 20+ games we will play through to late May. Good news for all bona fide Celtic supporters on here!
