Promising second addition

146

A signing is never a signing until you see the player kick a ball for Celtic, but a second January addition is apparently going through a medical today.  Borussia Monchengladbach’s Czech striker Tomas Cvancara (25) would add significantly to our attacking powers.  So much so, that if he passes his medical (you know our injury luck this season), he is likely to feature at Tynecastle on Sunday.

The player shone in 18 months at Sparta Prague before earning a €10.5m move to Germany.  Two years on the fringes in Germany proceeded a six-month loan in Turkey, which ended earlier this month.  He last played on 4 December, so although he will hopefully be injury-free, it is unlikely he will be ready for a full 90 minutes.

A promising start as striker at Borussia ended when an ankle injury in January 2024 led to two-months on the sidelines.  After that, he was used mostly as a sub, not starting another Bundesliga game until October.  Appearances after the injury were mostly on the right wing.

If Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney can reconnect the player with his earlier form, he will thrive in the Scottish Premiership.  The recent stats are not flattering, but as you and I know, it is not the stats that is important, it is their reading.  Think Jota, who has hardly kicked a ball since Cvancara left Czechia.

At 6’ 3” he would also add a physical dimension missing from our play.  We know a few wingers who would welcome that kind of target to aim for.  As we discussed, believe nothing until you see him on the ball.

Are you thinking that is quite a lot or not a lot re Paphos ? Or just pointing it out ?

Given the Cypriot co eff goes above Scotland this year I guess it would be expected they would be spending. Still nothing like our squad value.

Just listened to Martin in your link.

Like yourself, I failed to see anything other than a calm, controlled MON.

Maybe I just don`t know what `raging` means.

Marseille – Liverpool was an enjoyable enough watch.

Nice to see 3 ex-Celts playing (Matt was on the bench).

Couple of tubes in commentary – really thick as mince, both – couldn’t spoil it.

  5. Most of the English I know, think Mc Coist is brilliant!!!!.I get shot down for “Just being biased”.When I tell them he is a bawbag.

I will say this though,I hate that condescending

, ass kissing, grovelling, commentator who works alongside him more,Darren Fletcher.

Celtic40me – interesting stuff thanks for posting. It’s a pity they don’t provide the data in excel form for folks to play around with.

The thing that jumped out at me was the trend in wages for the top 20 – most clubs are stagnant to down in absolute terms since 2023 and declining meaningfully as a proportion of revenue since 2021.

It was also interesting that Man Utd’s broadcast revenue was lower in 2025 v 2021, but despite being crap their commercial revenue is still growing nicely!

  10. Rest in peace Harry

Take care of yourself and your family Bournesouprecipe. Great memories of a life well lived.

Just watched a video of cousins over in Bologna in a no go pub belting out the rebs.

Without looking into it deeper I couldnt say for sure, but maybe the wage stagnation is down to to the new UEFA FSR regs and the same for the EPL kicking in. Maybe the Saudis calming down a bit helped as well.

With Man United, maybe it’s Jim Ratcliffe making the commercial department more effective.

It’s depressing reading for us. We’re more dependent on CL revenue than ever to compete and we saw this summer how insecure that is. Commercially we’re doing very well but any increase in match day revenue is dependent on big capital expenditure which will be costly. Assured domestic TV revenue is not only “cheap” in terms of costs, it’s also guaranteed cash flow which makes borrowing easier and cheaper.

We’re not just competing with European clubs any more. Managers and players get paid multiples of what we can afford in Saudi. Even South American clubs are edging ahead of us financially.

  12. Profit from player trading remains key. Theres no escaping it.

Which does mean we need to get back to a sensible trading model starting today.

  13. Meanwhile after 7 games the champions league table looks like a de facto European Super League. The super clubs will go again surely

And the club that kept is out is bottom.

  14. BSR

Sincerest condolences on the loss of your brother.

Just read your lovely tribute and it certainly resonates.

  15. Zero appeal for me to watch any of the so called super clubs, the games are stale boring and crowd celebrations in many instances are false provided by sports tourists. I will watch Celtic tonight and hoping that somehow with what we have MON his coaches and team can provide a minor miracle. Required of course due to our Board and Football department being a tragic mess.

  16. McCoist as a co commentator?

He’s everywhere! Commentating on the English Premiership, FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League, ‘I’ll tell you this, absolutely Fletch’, adds absolutely nothing to any game he’s working on. His preparation is also appalling as he clearly has a look at the team sheet 5 minutes before kick-off and just tells everyone, it’s television after all, what is happening or what has happened, which we can all see, nightmare!

    His agent is a genius!

  17. “The Battered Bunnet on 22nd January 2026 11:57 am

Why is that do you think ?
