Proof that top level football is not always great

807

Yesterday was not a particularly good day for football.  The Edinburgh cup final was played before a half empty Hampden long before the end and Chelsea’s revival of catenaccio secured the Champions League.  If nothing else the latter proved that football at the very top level is not always great.  Perhaps the reason why truly great teams are so celebrated.

There is an interesting dynamic to Rangers in administration.  Creditors have a cash offer of around £8.5m to consider but eight players, Naismith, Bocanegra, McGregor, David, Whittaker, Goian, Lafferty and Edu cut release clause deals with Duff and Phelps for values greater than this.

Any CVA agreed next month (unlikely though it is) could be paid for by the departure of these players.  Charles Green could potentially be the second person to buy Rangers for only £1.

It is, however, unlikely that other clubs will offer money for these players before a CVA is agreed as they will be available as free agents should the CVA fail and those in control of Ibrox attempt to form a Newco.  Therefore, the chances of creditors getting their hands on any of these transfer fees are limited, no matter what happens to the company.

“but a long ball unattractive team?

    seriously?”

Did you miss the bits about power and pace or are you going to keep being selective?

Let me repeat. I enjoyed the MON era. All those easy 5:0 wins against teams that could not cope with our strength and pace? What’s not to enjoy?

When you can play long balls up to personnel like Hartson & Sutton where possession is kept and re-cycled, it can be effective football, attacking football and, if you are a fan of the team, attractive football.

What it cannot be and is not, is Barca style purist football or Liverpool 80s style or Milan 90s style or Lisbon Lions style. MON would not claim that nor would he apologise for it. He played to his strengths

I never addressed my last post to you, why did you assume it was meant for you or was it just a case of ‘if the hat fits’?

Absolutely great to hear the degree of appreciation for wee G.S.

I’ve read Strachan’s autobiography, in fact it’s sitting beside me on my bedside cabinet now. My version must have been edited differently from yours, as in mine he talks very highly of Celtic and the supporters.

Just a wee thank you to all those CQNers, posters and lurkers alike, that bought the remaining “first edition” CQN badges. I hope you are wearing them with pride.

We have raised just under £210, which will be winging it’s way to the beneficiary, The Kano Foundation, later this week. I am sure they will put it to good use.

For those that wanted, but missed out and indeed the many that have contacted us to register their interest for the new badges, a big thank you. We currently have pre-orders of over 100 badges already.

The new badge designs (there will be 2) have been finalised and these should be available in early July. Just in time for the new season.

Each boss had better aspects than each of the others. Jock Stein had them all beaten by a margin though.

  15. HT

He gave all he had to Celtic.

He was asked to reduce the wage bill, he was imo, not expected to win 3 iar, let alone the last 16 of the CL twice.

I agree that the football sometimes wasn’t scintilating, but on ocassion he didn’t get the luck he deserved,

Milan in Milan, stone wall pen when Maldini stopped the ball with his raised arm for example.

Helicopter thursday was the icing on the cake for me.

Far too many supporters bought into the msm hype, the same supporters who never paid any attention to the media hype btw.

  17. rangers in administration, the gift that keeps on giving…

Dave King has emerged as the latest obstacle to Charlie Green’s alleged

    takeover at Rangers.

Last Sunday the former Sheffield United chief claimed that he had paid Whyte

£2 for his 85% shareholding in the club only to reveal on Friday that the deal

was dependent on a CVA being accepted by HMRC and Ticketus.

With Andrew Ellis claiming to be owed 24.9% of Whyte’s Rangers

shareholding any sale is likely to be challenged by the former Northampton

    Town director.

The prospects of getting a CVA approved from a pot of £8.5m looks remote

with King stepping in today to stake his claim for Whyte’s 85% shareholding in

    the club.

King shocked the Rangers support in March when he declared that the

liquidation of the club looked inevitable with today’s comments further

reducing the chances of the club remaining as a going concern.

Discussing his claim for Whyte’s shares the South African based businessman

told the BBC: “It was verbally agreed over lunch but is legally valid. It suited

him at the time and I will hold him to it.

“I have first option on [his] shares and would not forgo this unless I

was absolutely certain that any proposed transaction, that excluded

me, was in the best interests of the club. I have yet to see such a

    proposal.”

King, who is the largest shareholder in Rangers after Whyte added: “I stayed

on because I also had my investment and those of the other minority

shareholders to protect and I believe that my presence on the board

prevented Whyte from getting away with more than he even did.

“The ultimate problem was that he knowingly lied to me and blocked my

ability to validate some of his contentions with the club’s financial controller.

“I believed that the financial controller had a fiduciary obligation to supply me

with information even though it transpired that Whyte had told him not to.

“I was also alert to the fact that Whyte would run out of time and felt that it

was better that at least one independent director would be there.

“I was also alert to the fact that Whyte would run out of time and felt that it

was better that at least one independent director would be there to protect

the interests of the minority shareholders and the fans.

“If I had resigned Whyte would have had carte blanche. The minorities, in my

firm view, were defrauded in the initial transaction by Whyte and I intend to

seek recourse in that regard once I have access to the Duff & Phelps

    investigation of the company’s affairs.”

Rangers problems are expected to escalate on Wednesday when a BBC documentary by Mark Daly throws fresh light on the troubles at tgghe club. In October a programme on Whyte revealed that he had served a seven year ban as a director and resulted in the broadcaster having it’s media access to the club withdrawn.
