Yesterday was not a particularly good day for football. The Edinburgh cup final was played before a half empty Hampden long before the end and Chelsea’s revival of catenaccio secured the Champions League. If nothing else the latter proved that football at the very top level is not always great. Perhaps the reason why truly great teams are so celebrated.
There is an interesting dynamic to Rangers in administration. Creditors have a cash offer of around £8.5m to consider but eight players, Naismith, Bocanegra, McGregor, David, Whittaker, Goian, Lafferty and Edu cut release clause deals with Duff and Phelps for values greater than this.
Any CVA agreed next month (unlikely though it is) could be paid for by the departure of these players. Charles Green could potentially be the second person to buy Rangers for only £1.
It is, however, unlikely that other clubs will offer money for these players before a CVA is agreed as they will be available as free agents should the CVA fail and those in control of Ibrox attempt to form a Newco. Therefore, the chances of creditors getting their hands on any of these transfer fees are limited, no matter what happens to the company.

Curiously, Sir Walter Scott, who was at once Chairman of the Edinburgh Celtic Society, and responsible for the popularity of the term ‘Heart of Midlothian’ (the Tolbooth jail in Embra) pretty much wrote out the Gaelic history of Scotland in ‘Tales of a Grandfather’.
‘Celtic’ to Scott was represented by the Jacobite clans of the Western Highlands, from which he invented the colourful, romantic Shortbread Tin nonsense we recognise today as ‘tartanry’.
Scott’s ‘Tales’ was considered to be the definitive history of Scotland from the time of its publication in the early 19th Century until relatively recent times.
Scott’s exclusion of the period of migration of Irish Gaels to Western Scotland, seeding the origins of the country, culture and language of Scotland for 1000 years, is considered now to have been a conscious decision to avoid recognising the mystical Catholicism of the people and their origins during what was a troubled time in Scotland.
The 19th Century immigrant Irish ‘Celtic’ culture, while essentially the same as that of the Highlands and Western Isles, was largely unknown to lowland Scots at the time, thanks in large measure to the wiping of the historical record by Scott.
It is likely, although by no means demonstrable, that ‘Celtic’ was used to define separate identities at that time: The living culture of the incoming Irish and Western Highland communities; and the storybook stuff invented by Scott.
Naming the club ‘Celtic’ was a deliberate, conscious choice by the founders. As educated people, it is likely that they understood the duality of the term. In the circumstances, Brian Wilson’s take on it is by no means unreasonable.
Luxcelt I was at the other end. So don’t know
Don’t think all ticket affairs didny start 100% till after cup final
Was a great nite anyway
32 years ago the players of both teams earned less money than one player in the CL final
I know which game I would watch again :)))
Leeds United’s out of contract starlet Aidy White is being tracked by Scottish champions Celtic.
White who will leave Elland Road this summer unless he reaches an agreement to renew his deal.
Celtic have been linked with a move for the 20-year-old should those negotiations – which have been ongoing for many months – break down.
White’s contract expires at the end of next month and he is effectively free to talk to rivals clubs, though Leeds retain the right to compensation due to their former youth-team player being under the age of 24.

I remember being back at Love Street for the final game of that season 1979/80.
We had to win that day to be champs again(I think?) while, Aberdeen had to win by a certain amount of goals(I think ?)
Anyway, I recall several ahem, contentious decisions going against us that day ?
The following week….SCF v’s the huns the riot-final!
Walking up the steps at the Celtic end on the way in…..guess what the huns were singing to us ?
“Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Aberdeen!”
Oh, how that tune would be changed in the coming seasons! :)))

THE green and white hoops are still celebrating all over the world after our brother club, Santos Laguna secured the Mexican league title with a 2-1 victory over Monterrey on Sunday.
The play-off final to decide the winner of the Clausura League saw Santos Laguna draw 1-1 with Monterrey on Thursday in the first-leg. And it was the green and white hoops who triumphed at the weekend.
Former Celt, Marc Crosas was in the starting line-up for Santos, and the hoops took the lead in sixth minute when Daniel Luduena scored. A goal from Oribe Peralta just after the hour mark made it 2-0, and though Monterrey scored late on, it was Santos Laguna who won the match to become Mexican champions.
Everyone at Celtic Football Club is delighted at the victory for the green and white hoops of Santos Laguna, and we congratulate our brother club in Mexico for their fantastic success in winning the championship.

A quote from Willie Maley’s biography about Bro. Walfrid.
“He was the most enthusiastic Celt who ever lived. It was to him that the Club owes it’s name, as he managed to get the new committee to adopt it as against a strong proposal to call the club the Glasgow Hibernians”.
It seems to me that he was giving a nod to the club’ playing environment.

The guy with the boltcutters might have been trying to make sure we could get out!
Not long before that, the gates were still locked when the whistle went. A lot of fans coming down VERY steep stairs into a bottleneck with nowhere to go until a team of fellas with more muscles than I have ripped the gates off the runners.
And curiously, not a mention in the papers etc….

Myth is the most powerful psychological construction we have for interacting with the wider universe. Every culture in every part of the world has recognised mythology as the primary medium through which to makes sense of reality since time immemorial. Even our technocratic hyper rationalist Western Civilization is shaped by founding myths. These myths are so deep that we hardly even notice them shaping our thoughts & how we see the world- its what Carl Jung called the Collective Unconscious. Religion, poetry, art are all use myth as their raw material. Even Darwinism is a form of mythology. Everything that tries to contain reality as a construct is a myth because reality can never be contained- its always “beyond”.
As I said before facts are always changing- is that not a reasonable assumption?
This is a very complex subject that I don’t have the time to go into- but to call me childish: well, I think that reflects more on you than me.
I always remember coming home from Love street in 86 and listening to SSB when it was the real-deal.
A hun caller on to Sanderson saying that ” St Mirren lay down to help Celtic today!”
Sanderson to caller “That is Absolute BUNKUM!”
Sanderson continued “It was shoot-out Saturday and, Celtic had their pistol’s full!”
Sanderson again “And, that is why David Hay’s Celtic are, DESERVED CHAMPION’S Tonight!”
Sanderson again “As for Hearts…they where on a good run but, when the chips where down…Hearts didn’t have the HEART!”
I recall that as one of the best editions of SSB EVER!

Who was your Granny’s favourite Celtic Player?
Just something that will start a cycle of new discussion instead of the current recycling of anti Hun sentiments as we are broadly agreed that we hate the cheating bar stewards and would love to see them defunct.
Would I be correct in saying that, we beat St Mirren at ibrokes on a friday night on the way to winning the league at the 4-2 game ?
I seem to remember being in the centenary stand that night and, there was netting thingy hanging from the ceiling and, folk were putting ginger bottles onto it?
Foggy memories-heid on :)))

No-one could remember detail like that unless there was a vested interest.
It’s not an insult,btw. Not necessarily a compliment either,haha!

I have to agree with you regarding the centre back situation. There was an attempt to portray Victor Wanyama, a midfielder, as an alternative to signing one. Wilson is Neil Lennon’s choice signing, and while he did not get a lot of playing time, it is difficult to see him making that position his own. I think it is great that Wanyama can defend, that helps the team back and middle, but he must not be sacrificed for the fact. We are linked with Matt Mills, of Leicester City, (the £3 million bid), and he could be a good signing, with Wilson heading South. For all their faults Chelsea showed the value of having a defender, Cahill, who keeps his position and stays on his feet. Loovens, who I like as a player who can play off a dominant back, is gone, Rogne has not yet developed, and Mulgrew who looks like a good bet to play left side of a back three, if we play that way. All good enough for the SPL, but we need to try and minimise the type of goal we lost in Europe.
If we are called Celtic……why do we sing Cellic ?

Aye,we beat them 2-0 as I recall.
We made sure it was the biggest crowd at Ibrox for quite some time,as they were more used to something like the numbers who turned up yesterday.

RANGERS fans will be able to get their hands on the new 2012/13 kit this week when the eagerly anticipated strip hits shops on Thursday.

If you go to watch McBeth at the theatre, read a novel or watch a film & its “lies” & myths inspire you to change your life & become a better person is that not a good thing?
If you believe its real then that is childish. But its understanding the kernel of truth inside the myth that matters.
I would rather read Shakespeares myths than what passed for “fact” in old Williams time.
But then what do I know? I, a mere child, bow to the superior sagacity of Ernie the Wise.
Kev jungle : I seem to recall Aberdeen playing a team from the south side of Glasgow that day and were 4 up at half time while it was 0 0 at CP.
It would appear that “he used to be a bun but he’s alright now!” isnt alright after all.
He seems to have attended a walk organised in the Govan area at the weekend if reports are to believed.

Another player Neil Lennon knows from his time at Forest.
Norwich’s want-away striker Grant Holt is set to hold clear-the-air talks with the club on Monday.
The 31-year-old had a transfer request rejected last Friday, with Lee Payne – his agent – saying Holt has his reasons for wanting out.
Payne told a local radio station: “If they ever come out in the wash, I’m sure everybody will understand why he did what he did.
“It’s been a difficult few days really. It’s not a decision Grant’s made overnight. It’s something that’s been ongoing for a little while now.
“He loves the club. He loves the fans. I think the fans love him. He’s had a tremendous three years and he just feels it was a decision he had no other choice to make at this stage.
“It’s a decision he felt he had to make and I’m standing with him 100% on it. There have been some things that have gone that we felt were not right. That’s what we’re going to resolve with (chief executive) David McNally.”
Holt contributed 15 Premier League goals to the Canaries’ 12th-placed finish this past season.
