Proof that top level football is not always great

807

Yesterday was not a particularly good day for football.  The Edinburgh cup final was played before a half empty Hampden long before the end and Chelsea’s revival of catenaccio secured the Champions League.  If nothing else the latter proved that football at the very top level is not always great.  Perhaps the reason why truly great teams are so celebrated.

There is an interesting dynamic to Rangers in administration.  Creditors have a cash offer of around £8.5m to consider but eight players, Naismith, Bocanegra, McGregor, David, Whittaker, Goian, Lafferty and Edu cut release clause deals with Duff and Phelps for values greater than this.

Any CVA agreed next month (unlikely though it is) could be paid for by the departure of these players.  Charles Green could potentially be the second person to buy Rangers for only £1.

It is, however, unlikely that other clubs will offer money for these players before a CVA is agreed as they will be available as free agents should the CVA fail and those in control of Ibrox attempt to form a Newco.  Therefore, the chances of creditors getting their hands on any of these transfer fees are limited, no matter what happens to the company.

Last year Strachan- not long after the Dougiegate fiasco- was interviewed by DR & quoted as saying that there was no bias against Celtic. We’re all just paranoid. Don’t like him. Won’t apologize for that. I’m not the only one. What’s wrong with divergent opinions- does it not fit into how you understand the world? Your intolerance speaks volumes- is life somehow more complicated when too many people hold different views at the one time?

Good Goalie, centre half and striker, build a team of substance round them.

I’d be sorry to lose FF but don’t think we will. He’ll be offered the best deal we can provide as will Gary Hooper who will be next to be touted for the off.

Henrik was a different matter. We had a guy who was irreplaceable and negotiations to keep him, against offers from elsewhere, must have been tough for whoever was negotiating on our behalf.

Of course it would have helped that Henrik and his family were happy in Scotland but a package had to be offered that was financially satisfactory to him.

Good to see you again on Friday, nice to meet your two Brothers as well.

You make a moot point, as I posted, it unfortunately comes to Agents in the end but on this occasion it does appear we are winning this one but it will depend on what Green does…not Charlie by the way…:)

No he didn’t. That may be how you read it but that’s your issue, not his. When we already dislike someone, it is dead easy to twist their words to suit our prejudices.

Gordon Strachan did not believe there was any organised conspiracy by refs against us. I can support that view too without jumping to the conclusion that a) all refs are fair or b) All Celts are paranoid.

Gordon Strachan is a Celtic man.

Some of the things you say and the way you often say them reminds me fondly of my favourite sleekit hun who slimes across this blog from time to time.

I offer my gratitude to Gordon Strachan as a manager of my club as much as any other.

Why do people feel the need to be so insulting when someone has a different opinion? Just don’t understand that.

By “Celtic minded” I mean someone who believes in open attractive attacking football- the way Lenny’s young team play at their best- can you seriously say you enjoyed watching Strachans team in his last few years?

    Crowds were rapidly falling even

Oh, and Del Piero just came off. I wanted him to score in his last ever game

  11. Still 1 each in auxerre. psg are leading in their game, so a goal for auxerre would give psg the title.

  12. Jobo- I’ve got a bit of red coupon myself, just not used to seeing the sun, hopefully you will be reporting more of the same each morning this week.

  13. MON did not play an attractive style of football either. It was basically a mixture of speedy wing backs, long balls from back to front, and plenty of crosses and headed goals. It was no purist style but we loved it and never dreamt of belittling it.

I can acknowledge that Gordon Strachan’s teams were not easy on the eye and that he fetishised possession and minimised risk, but by winning 3iar he provided me with great pleasure.

I was more peed off with the moaning minnies in the support than the lack of great football style during the Strachan era, but this accusation of being not-Celtic-minded has never been explained satisfactorily by any poster beyond the rationale of ” I just didnae like the guy”

  14. Crowds were falling even as we were winning.

Naka was great. Strachan even said he wanted to play creative/attractive but for some reason (IMO) it didn’t happen very often.

The Man U game I’m talking about was the 1-1 game when Giggs scored in last few minutes…after we defended for the whole 90 mins. Alborg was another poor show. We were getting bad to watch at the end of his tenure.

Lawwells cost cutting probably didn’t help.

My grandson bought a new pair football boots a few weeks ago costing £165. Within a couple games they burst. Took them back and got a pair @ £145 they burst as well. Took them back and paid £135 so far so good!! They are green & white with his the side and also the number 5 as he plays C H.

it was because a flare was thrown onto the field. an army of riot police have now turned up to stand in front of the police. Full time in psg game – 2-1 to paris.

  19. I was an early sceptic of Fraser Forster and his promotion on a loan deal to be Celtic’s number one, however potential that we couldn’t immediately see has been realised. Newcastle will be looking for a fee in millions, and it will be very interesting to see if Celtic match the fee.

The backdrop to all Celtic summer signings required now that the season has ended will be unique.

Season ticket money is already winging it’s way to Celtic, how will the board react in a situation where our historical nearest challengers are unable to sign players, will Celtic cut their cloth to suit, or be more fiscally prudent due to unparalleled times in Scottish Football?

How determined will we be, to keep a Gary Hooper?, where the likelihood is a game against a New Club with no money and little prospect of winning the league if, and it’s a big if, Celtic maintain it’s level of playing squad.

Firstly, I liked the guy. Secondly, he was and is a Celtic man.

MON did not, as you post did not by and large play attractive football. However, by and large I much preferred watching his teams rather than Gordon’s. Perhaps that was because in my opinion MON had far better players. Although, for whatever reason I did not enjoy watching his teams in the latter days of his reign.

Gordon was always going to find it difficult to follow MON, in the eyes of the majority of Supporters in my opinion. He certainly did not have the money that MON had and lets face the latter’s team was more or less gone. All of that said Gordon done brilliantly in the circumstances. He found a system that worked with the players he was able to bring in. As you say, he managed three-in-a-row. The most satisfying in my opinion was the third.

I always like listening to Strachan’s dry sense of humour, especially when dealing with the media.

    Keep the Faith!

  22. how can people say MON didnt play attractive football?

    really?

were we the scottish version of Wimbledon?

The Fraser Forster fee has already been agreed with Newcastle. it was agreed at the start of the loan and is fixed at that price- reported to be £2m.

However that is the fee if we choose to buy and if Fraser chooses to join. I assume we wish to buy. Newcastle have no say in the matter (other than turning FF’s head by telling him they want him back as number 1) . Therefore the only missing variable is Fraser being willing to join and his agent letting him do so.

Why should ST renewals match previous seasons just at this time. If I renew I’ll not be doing it in accord with any deadline. I’ll decide if/when I’ll renew.

This is a difficult time financially for the club though they won’t come out and say it.
