Proof that top level football is not always great

807

Yesterday was not a particularly good day for football.  The Edinburgh cup final was played before a half empty Hampden long before the end and Chelsea’s revival of catenaccio secured the Champions League.  If nothing else the latter proved that football at the very top level is not always great.  Perhaps the reason why truly great teams are so celebrated.

There is an interesting dynamic to Rangers in administration.  Creditors have a cash offer of around £8.5m to consider but eight players, Naismith, Bocanegra, McGregor, David, Whittaker, Goian, Lafferty and Edu cut release clause deals with Duff and Phelps for values greater than this.

Any CVA agreed next month (unlikely though it is) could be paid for by the departure of these players.  Charles Green could potentially be the second person to buy Rangers for only £1.

It is, however, unlikely that other clubs will offer money for these players before a CVA is agreed as they will be available as free agents should the CVA fail and those in control of Ibrox attempt to form a Newco.  Therefore, the chances of creditors getting their hands on any of these transfer fees are limited, no matter what happens to the company.

The last refuge of a gutteral mind is to resort to toilet humour.

I really don’t give a feck what people say about me. Its the black sheep effect of in-group bias…But to make judgements about someone you don’t know based on a divergent opinion of Gordon Strachan- thats a bit mental.

I ain’t gettin sucked into a self perpetuating vortex of negative emotion…certainly not by you.

Agreed. I always thought MON’s teams played high tempo attacking football.

History books judge Strachan more kindly than I do.

No denying his record but I never took to him or his style of football.

Never a Celtic Man. Read his biography .. Look for quotes from

I think it’s fine to say the football wasn’t great latterly under WGS, as it’s a view I think many would share. By your own admission you were a wee bit cranky over WGS earlier, and I think some posters react to the personal ‘I just don’t like the guy’ stuff.

I am really not sure though on the Lawwell criticisms. I shared that view at the time, but knowing what we know now, that we were up against proven cheats and liars, I have mellowed in any board brickbats.

Others have called you a hun. I don’t think you are, but in the tradition of calling posters huns where they are new, you might be. In fact you are. But you’re not new, so you might be, but as I have already said, you’re not. Hope that clears things up.

  6. MON’s team did play some awful stuff as well some times. I remember the Aberdeen 1-1 game whaere Fernandez came on and was then substituted.

WGS did give us plenty of European highlights though he got the rub of the green that MON didn’t in Europe.

  8. No mate you just post your discord, with a subject matter not of the day, and enjoy the fuss. Every Celtic Supporter has a valid gripe, few revel in promoting it years after the event but you seem to enjoy it. Your response is well in the mould of my favourite little hun who couldnae get a burd for love or lots of money.

Don’t know if you ever saw GS on motd one night being a pundit and talking absolute nonsense, big Peter Schmeichle(sp. ?) let him know in a nice way that he thought he was spouting nonsense,GS put down of him was totally cringing and how big Peter didn’t land one on him makes him a better man than I will ever be.

This was well before he was our manager and I have other tales which back up my view of him,my strong dislike of him has nothing to do with him not being ‘Celtic minded’ (hate that phrase) but the type of smart Alec I think he is.

As I said, I loved watching the team in both MON and WGS eras, therefore I found both attractive but how attractive would MON’s team have been without Henrik? He found it hard to accommodate flair players- Juninho & Moravcik.

The Leicester team he coached were compared with Wimbledon and he brought a similar philosophy here and has taken it on to Villa and Sunderland. It is attractive because it is winning, successful football with lots of goals scored against physically weaker teams. However it made no pretense to imitating the Barca style or even the constant possession football of 80’s Liverpool or 90’s Milan.

I think Lennybhoy’s critique is fair. GWS teams were not easy on the eye but the wee fella got an unjustifiably hard time from many of our support.

MON gave us back our pride but he was not the second coming of Jock Stein. Despite our spending at the time on Lennon, Sutton & Hartson, MON did not have the natural resources that Jock had from 66 to 74, a generation of world class players.

Both MON and WGS did well with the resources at their disposal. It saddens me that one was so venerated and the other so decried. The judgement on both should be more equal and fair.

Neil Lennon is doing his best to merge winning football with more attractive play but many of our wins this season were dull and uninspiring 1:0 wins against fogged unadventurous opposition. We will see whether Neil has to compromise style when faced with CL level teams like the Man U outfit which was selected as an example to criticise WGS

Strachan’s record is fantastic, and even more so given the abuse and negativity heaped on him from the start by the media and worse the pathetic elements of our so called support…….The Telfer / Caldwell / Naylor detractors who danced the media tune in their ignoranc, even booing him at CP.

Just imagine what we could have won had we aligned behind him like we did with MON, or even if he had a ‘King of Kings’ type talisman……

I didn’t know that the fee was agreed and i’m pleased to hear that was part of the extended loan period. I also think £2m is a steal in terms of his present status, and further development.

I won’t fall for DR esque “We can’t find his agent” reportage either, and think he’ll sign very happily for Celtic.

Difficult time I agree, and totally unique when your nearest rival though facing extinction will probably in some shape or form, still be on a pitch with you.

Completely and utterly empathise with any torn Celtic fans awaiting developments.

In my opinion ‘hurting Celtic’ (by non renewal) using Paul67’s words of ‘illogical thought” is very very close to the way I see it.

But I don’t need any other evidence, like the foreseeable gerrymandered New Club to illustrate that we already play in a continous cartel, and from a very young age, it’s been one of the main reasons I’ve supported Celtic.

Never saw the Schmeichel incident but I have enjoyed WGS’s insights into football mostly when I have caught them.

I’ve met many in our support who “just did not like him” but if it boils sown to stuff he said that Schmeichel took offence to, I hope you will understand that I do not find that a compelling reason for the animosity shown to a successful Celtic man.
