Property maintenance and stadiums

“If I hadn’t seen such riches, I could live with being poor.”  When Celtic Park hosted the Commonwealth games in 2014, we played Champions League qualifiers at Murrayfield.  It was an eye-opener.  Entrance and egress, catering and shops, space and the feeling of safety and comfort were a level above what I was used to in the at the back row of the North Stand at Celtic Park (since moved).

Last month, I engaged the club on the need to improve the spectator experience, spend some money, be more like Murrayfield.  I received an off the cuff but still detailed response on the millions spent each year to maintain and improve the stadium.

Property maintenance is a continuous job, especially in Scotland for buildings erected in the second half of the 20th century.  If you cut corners, you have a bigger job and a higher price to pay down the road.

Newco are caught in a property renovation bind that could be straight out of an episode of Grand Designs.  “Billy, a tax accountant from Glasgow, is building an eight-bedroom hovering home and has decided to project manage himself.  Billy remembers ordering the steel girders, but the Chinese supplier is no longer answering the phone.”  We are right to mock Billy.

You, me and James have seen such riches.  We want to sit down in a stadium fit for the middle of the 21st century.  What else are we going to do with all those millions?

  1. Celtic Park is 30 years old and should be state of the art giving the money we have rhe mai stand 60+ years old I hope our custodians have plans to bring the rest of our stadium and surrounds up to the a high standard also.

  2. We could make more money and utilsie the large spaces we own at the stadium why not have an end of season concert if we have success .

We could have some temporary bars shops food outlets some live entertainment a marquee if required.

We would bring revenue into the club and good proper fan zone large screen to show Celtic tv on match days and we would make more money again for our club.

Janfield street decorate the walls we must have tons of 9iar league flags tucked away.

So much more potential still I feel.

Celtic have applied for a licence and failed to get it from Glasgow City council for all the initiatives you outlined.

We would have had a Fan Zone, particularly to celebrate winning the League years ago but so far the Council have refused the licence.

Hard to know what else they can do

  5. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Latest rumour is that some guy called Tony Stark is jetting in for signing talks with Sevco…

  6. Do they have to apply for hot water in the toilets? Surely this should mandatory in the 21st century.

Can they not reapply for a licence for the fan zone etc? Surely they could highlight Glasgow council’s lack of help or ask why said licence was refused. I would have thought there would be votes in it, if the support were made aware of the situation.

  7. Sevco need a stellar signing to galvanise the club.

Does anyone know what happens to clubs who get knocked out of the CL qualifiers? To they automatically drop into the EL, or are they out of all competition?

  8. Why has Glasgow City Council refused licences for our club to have fans zone etc,and The Hotel ,Ticket ,Office ,one must assume Celtic Don’t own all the spare Ground around the stadium, also there was supposed to be a Club .modeled on railway stations between Kinloch Street, Dalriada Street and London Rd, did they block that to.

  9. Celtic plc own the land between a728 west to east to stand side of dalriada street.

they do not own london road, janefield street, holywell street or the access section of kinloch street.

planning consent is routinely denied for multiple projects across the city, it happens every day of the week.

a cleared section of brown field site might take 10 years to bring to a consent level.

I know hyperbole comes in to play, but i dont subscribe to “the council turned the fans against is ” in a limmy sort of rant.

the r”angers have had planning for fanzones, the fabled edminston house, car parking, advertising, rights of way and now will struggle with retrospective planning consnet, em, because their planns are changing.

whisper it, Queens park and the SFA have had delays around the hampdens even with sir willie leaning in.

Timbhoy, i have explained mush of our plans to you over and over again, and still you dont get it.

Marks and Spencers, Barclays, even the SECC had to wait on consents.

But hey lets have a go at celtic plc.

  10. Adam Idah’s future is in his agent’s hands. Players and agents have all the power now, contract or no contract. If he wants to come, he’ll be here, por cierto.

  11. quick glance, celtic dont own davaar street either, the wee road into the ticket office.

  12. we are still waiting on consent for a rotating led advertising screen, you would think chris trainer could just make that happen easy.

  13. PC,

    Aston Villa have large debts.

Chelsea have a significant FSR challenge.

Why bother paying market value, say, £25m for Maatsen and £6.5m for Kellyman ….

    …. a net handover of £18.5m

When you can net handover the same amount for transactions at £37.5m and £19m.

You still need planning permission to build on land you own.
