Protecting your keeper and defence

772

If we are looking for reasons why Celtic have dropped so many points in recent weeks it is revealing that we have not kept a clean sheet away in the league since Boxing Day, and that was to bottom club Dundee.

Losing goals, of course, is seldom about the last line of defence, and losing goals this consistently is seldom even an issue with defence, in dominant teams, defenders are seldom taxed.  It is more likely a consequence of the shape of the team.  Goalkeepers should be protected, as should defences.

It’s the midfield we should be looking at.  Dominate possession and stop leaving spaces for the opposition to exploit; we’ll stop losing goals and start winning games.

Strikers need to be supplied with chances. Our style of play does not provide that in my opinion. We are too slow in the build up giving the opposition time to get back and defend plus too many of our midfield are Neil Lennon type players ie defensive midfield players as opposed to being creative in an attacking sense.

Our style of play is built on keeping the ball rather than taking any chances via attacking flair hence no room for the likes of Paddy McCourt and the likes.

  7. Sun out, as was promised. Still bitterly cold.

For those defending Charlie Mulgrew, remember we’re in Scotland, where what passes for our sports media will do anything and everything to vilify us. We shouldn’t give them any ammunition to beat us with. Imo, Charlie did exactly that. Celtic should be more canny than letting anything like that happen. We can’t allow our players to be made use of like that.

I, too, am disappointed that Charlie does not seem to have the wherewithall to avoid such situations. On the other hand, with the media we have here in Scotland, it doesn`t make a great deal of difference what is said. They would just make something up anyway .

  9. Re Charlies questioning yesterday, a simple “no comment” should be the standard answer when anything about dead-club is brought up. As usual the hacks just try to get something to bite on to create a non-story, to try to boost the ever decreasing sales of the rags.

I am a bit like that as well. When someone posts from sunnier climes, I feel a little bit of that sunshine here (not always an easy task in Arbroath 0:-) ).

The weather forecast for the Wee Oscar ride on Friday is not too good but when the going gets tough, I will think of you to help me through. I haven`t made any comments to you before because I didn`t have the words. I still haven`t , really, but at least you know there is another CQNer here who is with you.

They are playing the ‘say a thing often enough and it becomes true’ game.

What Charlie meant, I suppose, is that those were exciting games to take part in and to beat the deady bears gave us all a lift. This is a strange season because it’s the first one since they went into liquidation and stopped fielding a team in our competitions. It takes a bit of adjusting to. We are all still getting used to it.

Sevco are not them. A game against Sevco might provide Charlie and his fellow professionals with a bit of the same edge. I don’t know. Neither does he. We may never find out, if Sevco runs out of cash before it makes it into the same league as Celtic or we have the gross misfortune to be drawn against it in a cup competition.

‘Say it often enough’ means pretending Sevco are the deady bears and that the excitement the now defunct fixture used to generate can be replicated by pitting Celtic against Sevco. Perhaps it will. Perhaps we should ask Annan Athletic or Elgin City. They would know.

But I don’t think for a second that Charlie or anyone at Celtic would swap the excitement of playing Barcelona or Juventus or clubs of that stature most seasons for a match or two against the Charles Green Project.

  14. Chuckles and his wee club suffer from delusions of grandeur, they so want to be with the big boys but they’re not nor can they for no matter how much they try they are not Rangers, they know it, we know and the media know it. The rest is just illusion, delusion and spin, in the first season everyone is still finding all a bit odd and Chuckles pronouncements on all things are a mixture of desperation to be accepted whilst pushing that acceptance away, playing to the orange gallery and being stuck with one of the worst football managers of all time!!

Came on to share a thought, and it is more or less exactly what you are saying …….

This is a major / enforced TRANSITION season…….and Neil / team will learn from it……. All the teams realise that europe is attainable and the competition element is enhanced by that …what the LL need to realise is that their favoured team is finished / done / gone, and they need to start enjoying the new / developing ‘product’ ……. Not easy for them, since they need to talk up a bigotless game now………or sink with the carcass of oldco

They are slightly conflicted, the media, I mean.

They need the Sevco pound. They are dying a painful death anyway, but the Sevco pound is a stay of execution. Some of the spaniels involved in compiling the content obviously believe fervently in the Sevco = Rangers message and want to be part of the mass delusion that Bobby Ewing FC didn’t actually die.

Higher up, the pragmatists just want the cash and will say whatever they have to say.

Someone should start a new vehicle, probably online only. Report the game from the positive point of view you have just suggested. No baggage. No partisanship. No fear. No favour.
