Protecting your keeper and defence

772

If we are looking for reasons why Celtic have dropped so many points in recent weeks it is revealing that we have not kept a clean sheet away in the league since Boxing Day, and that was to bottom club Dundee.

Losing goals, of course, is seldom about the last line of defence, and losing goals this consistently is seldom even an issue with defence, in dominant teams, defenders are seldom taxed.  It is more likely a consequence of the shape of the team.  Goalkeepers should be protected, as should defences.

It’s the midfield we should be looking at.  Dominate possession and stop leaving spaces for the opposition to exploit; we’ll stop losing goals and start winning games.

I enjoy not buying any Sottish papers now…Sevco Herald spin relentless ….when they go out of business they may reflect on letting their sports journos , business writers and all, spin such rubbish..

  2. The midfield…

Ledley, Brown, Kayal, Wanyama, Commons, Forrest, Rogic and McGeouch

For some bizarre reason we have played the likes of Mulgrew, Ambrose, Matthews and Stokes in there as well in recent weeks.

That’s a vicious-looking beast. But I think half-a-dozen motivated TIMS wi pick-axes could do the job just as well.

Wonder if anybody knows where I can pick up a Bugatti Veyron in Glasgow before Friday

as I was thinking of asking that Anne Hathaway out for a drink and a meal, I have lined up Raymond Blanc to cook for us and Rod Stewart for the entertainment.

    Well they started it.

  5. The huns are becoming ever more divorced from reality – never thought this was possible.

Their ‘brothers’ in the msm continue to feed their delusions – and the eejits lap it up.

Next season they will still be in the bottom tier, and still handing out thousands of free tickets in order to artificially inflate crowds at that asbestos-ridden dump and blot on the landscape.

In contrast CP will host the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth games – which will be beamed around the world, giving CFC more exposure.

They are light years behind us – and will be forever!

  7. Hi Paul67,

“If we are looking for reasons why Celtic have dropped so many points in recent weeks it is revealing that we have not kept a clean sheet away in the league since Boxing Day, and that was to bottom club Dundee.”

That is quite a stat, especially in the light of a 21 – GA for the whole of last Season in the SPL.

It highlights once again the glaring inconsistencies with Celtic over the last few Seasons.

Is it down to NL beginning as a rookie Manager and having to rebuild a team/squad?

I was always interested in Gordon Strachan’s early comments as Celtic Manager – It would take him 3 years to build his team.

He subsequently went on to win the Championship in his first three seasons, then lost in the fourth.

Neil has done very well, very quickly but you get the feeling that if we can’t stem these inconsistencies it will blight his tenure.

  9. The third goal did appear to be a disaster for the Celtic defence but I think that Kelvin Wilson was sure that it was running through to Fraser Forster and the ball bounced up ideally for the forward instead.

  19. This spell in the lower leagues was a chance for Rangers to implement a football philosophy, of investing in the scouting network and youth development programme to ensure that when the club finally returns to the top flight, its foundations are strong. McCoist has spoken of the difficulties in signing players and the need to focus on gaining promotions, but the journey back should be based on a sustainable football model, one that identifies promising talent, buys it cheaply and sells at a premium.

These are defining months. The side needs to improve, despite its limitations, and the football department needs to be maximised. “Everybody is playing for their future, including the coaching and management staff,” McCoist said.

Leigh Griffiths is out of contract at the end of this season. His scoring record for Livingston,Dundee and now Hibs is excellent,no doubt about it.

He would be a major management task for Neil Lennon, and I don’t think he really needs that. But,if we can sort his head-which we never managed with Derek Riordan, whom I really rated-we would have a striker on our hands.

On a personal level, though, too much of a risk.

  22. The combined rule book for a proposed 12-12-18 league set-up in Scottish football next season “has confirmed there will be no fast-track route for Rangers back to the top flight,” according to Stephen Halliday of the SCOTSMAN.

That £100 million Turnover will have to wait for another season…

  23. Leigh Griffiths not for me, it would just shove Tony Watt down the pecking order, next season I think you will see Tony being developed into a first team player in the way we did with Wee Jamesy..

Ally McCoist is going to be the first name in a managerial hall of fame, with the likes of Jock Stein, Alex Ferguson , Bob Paisley, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Brian Clough ….

Sir Alex states, I don’t know why Ally has not been Knighted yet.

    Well they did start it.

  31. “Dominate possession and stop leaving spaces for the opposition to exploit”

We require a combiantion of spoilers (Lenny or Big Vic types) and ball players those who make a team tick and can pick out a pass (Maestro, Lubo,Paddy McC types). We, sadly, do not have that eleusive midfield combination at present.

  32. Steinreignedsupreme on

Leigh Griffiths is a talented player.

The best thing he could do is join Hibs next season. Then he has an opportunity to continue his development with his favourite team and maybe start to sort out his issues off-the-pitch.

He still has time to make a big move – and if he gets his head sorted out I’d consider taking a punt on him in a couple of years if he’s still doing the business.

  33. ballymenatoybhoy

Maybe some people love laughing at them and others on here get upset at that…

  34. From the Herald article, and ignoring the fantasy financial figures (if we’ve learnt anything from ibrox statements, we’ve surely learnt that) –

“With Puma, I negotiated that we get a very high royalty rate on everything, even what we sell in the shop here at Ibrox.”

Not the use of the first person, “_I_ did this”. This personal angle is clear in all missives emanating from the major figures at Ibrox. Charles green is often telling you what Charles Green has done, not what rangers have done. These people are in it purely for personal gain and it suggests some short-termism on their part, this guy can’t resist using a rangers interview as an opportunity to enhance his own CV.

Love him or hate him, I can’t recall the last time I heard Peter Lawwell taking personal credit for anything.
