PSG have yet to be asked questions

494

Friday night is the new Saturday afternoon, apparently. Celtic, Paris Saint-Germain and Anderlecht all play tomorrow evening. Only Bayern Munich from our Champions League group have a weekend game; on Saturday, so there will be little advantage gained from the earlier domestic kick-off.

PSG are away to Metz, near the German border. Whereas PSG are top of Ligue 1, having won all their games, Metz are anchored at the bottom, the only team yet to take a point. This game is a perfect opportunity for PSG to rest players who have been busy on international duty, before the trip to Glasgow. Celtic’s scouts will be able to observe the shape of their forthcoming opponents, but the intensity of the game will not come close to what we see at Celtic Park.

Immediately before the international break, PSG beat Saint Etienne 3-0 in Paris. It is one measure of a good team to win comfortably even when not playing well. PSG achieved this against Le Verts, but there was encouragement for Brendan Rodgers in this game. This was also the only league game PSG have played against a team who have not lost at least half of their matches so far.

Without having to go through the trauma of Champions League qualifiers, the notion persists that PSG have yet to be asked questions this season. They may be able to revel in the joys of having signed two exciting new strikers, but great teams are made of durable cohesion, not striking bling.

    Natknow,

Now there’s the quandary…..if we were earning that amount….wouldn’t we be scrambling every year to spend it…..before the tax-man got claws into it….it’d be a nice position to be in tho ;-))

I think it highlights the problem we (and a number of other clubs) face. We don’t have the income to compete in that tier – though we try to punch above our weight. So when we make it through to the Group stages it’s a significant event for us. Until European football is restructured to show less bias toward the big clubs we’ll always struggle.

Really?? I’d have been travelling through from Edinburgh then with my wee mate Stevie. I remember a particularly depressing train journey back after losing to the huns. Remember Gascoigne scored. Stevie had nothing to say all the way back from Queen St. to Waverley.

He’s a lot happier these days mind!! :-)))

    ANY RESPONSE ON THAT ?

    ————————————————–

I had a mate whose daughter was dating one of the Dunfermline team – young fella but regular starter back then. Remember him telling me he watched the Seville game on TV with his team mates and to a man they were supporting Porto and were delighted when we lost the game to the cheating twats. When Chris Sutton made his remark about Dunfermline throwing that game (and was vilified for it) I had no doubt his remarks were accurate. Absolutely believe they chucked it.

  6. Stivs,

Wouldn’t that fall under the all encompassing Judicial Review that we have asked for….and that the FTSFA have dismissed as combing over the coals…..am curious…..has anyone, ever, used that phrase when not referencing death…..Is it an admission that Rankers died?

Was as unaware as most of us about the 2012 letter from Celtic to SFA, but today’s statements might see a Celtic long game ramping up as the SFA just seemed to have painted themselves into an indefensible corner.

Don’t think for a second that the ‘leak’ to the Times was not intentional and the response from the conflicted and desperate SFA wasn’t anticipated. It’s about giving them enough rope to hang themselves.

In all complex proceedings it’s standard practice never to pose a question or create a scenario when the answer or the outcome is not anticipated in advance.

Particularly relevant when this whole mess will probably end up outside Scotland’s incompetent arena and into a European one, where Celtic are well represented in key strategic forums.

Sit back and watch the show. Might take a while but jelly and ice cream anyone ?

  9. I once asked Jimmy Calderwood in the Esquire Anniesland about that game at Ibrox.

His laughter and look gave him away.

He was on his way to a Hun game at Ibrox though, and in the company of a few prominent Knightswood Masons I grew up with. They know that we know. Cheatin masonic bassas.

I think Fergus negotiated with Strathclyde only for free transport. My cousins’ season books were say £200, travel to 20 Celtic games a season from Rothesay would be treble that. Fergus was a wee genius and shrewd business cookie.

  14. I just watched Russian film “Full stop:Fernando Ricksen on fight against death”.Very sad story any many very emotional moments

One of the shocking things there is what Fernando’s wife tells. They got not even one euro from the games at Fortuna and at Ibrox. Those who organized these games promised to give all money for the treatment.

  17. Travel cars wee not free but cost something like £15. Unreal could get train to Glasgow in Morning , get all day Subway ticket (to go to west end to look round second hand record shops) back into town and out to parkhead. Also could use it for reserve games so if a reserve game was on in glasgow you could just pop into Glasgow….sometimes i went to the game1 ALos used it to get anywhere in Strathclyde to Motherwell and Kilmarmock games

  25. …..its started.. it was inevitable it would come to a head, but when I read the newly published details on here, I now have no fear of what many were saying, that we would end up on the losing side, we would get no support from anywhere and it would all carry on as normal with us coming out with a bloody nose. The facts are now becoming overwhelmingly unavoidable, who can ignore this?.. how are they going to spin it this time?? where can they hide??? Lets push this over the line, justice will prevail and we will be vindicated. Punishment and retribution will follow. Bring it on, were ready.. Keep the Faith.

  26. Evening All,

Bit of an early request but 5 of us are travelling over from Dublin for the Bayern game on October 31st. I was hoping the packages would go on general sale on Tuesday so we missed out on being able to buy these when only ST holders had the option to buy more tickets. If anyone has any spares or knows anyone else with spare tickets I would be delighted to buy these from you.

Rangers EBT row as SFA snub new SPFL probe into Ibrox club’s tax affairs

An SFA letter reveals they have refused to participate in league’s planned investigation with Hampden chiefs saying that “raking over the coals” of the past would be “damaging”.

The SFA has declined an invitation from the SPFL to join a review into Rangers use of Employee Benefit Trusts.

The SPFL had proposed looking into Rangers’ use of the scheme and then asked the game’s governing body to take part.

The SFA confirmed they had received a request from Neil Doncaster, sent on behalf of all 42 league clubs, asking them to be involved in the investigation. They were also sent a separate letter from one Scottish club calling for an independent review.

But now, in a letter to member clubs the SFA has said that “after careful consideration” it was declining the SPFL’s wish for them to take part.

In the correspondence they maintain that “raking over the coals” of the past would be “damaging”.

The SFA also confirmed that it had set out a full response to the SPFL over the matter.

The letter states: “After careful consideration, the Board of the Scottish FA has declined the invitation to participate in such a review,” the SFA said in its letter.

“The Scottish FA is currently examining the detail of what was said in the most recent court cases and you can be assured that the matter will be dealt with by the Compliance Officer if there is any suggestion that the organisation has been knowingly misled in any of the matters that came before it.

“However, the image of the game in Scotland can only be damaged further by ‘raking over the coals’ of everything that has happened in the last six years for a further lengthy period of time.

“No-one is complacent or insensitive to the issues. It will be impossible to satisfy every supporter, every club official and every member club. Nevertheless, the Board of the Scottish FA is resolute.

The so-called ‘Big Tax Case’ ruling in July this year led to renewed calls from fans groups to re-open the matter that had previously been decided by the Lord Nimmo Smith inquiry in 2013.

That initial inquiry took place at a time when Rangers’ tax affairs were deemed to have operated within tax law.

Rangers oldco were fined £250,000 by Lord Nimmo Smith for the deliberate non-disclosure of the EBT payments to players but, crucially, he decided there was no sporting advantage.

This ensured that no sporting sanctions, such as stripping the Light Blues of titles won during the EBT era, took place.

The Nimmo Smith report said that while EBTs were not illegal, Rangers broke rules aimed at ensuring financial transparency in football by not disclosing them to the game’s governing bodies.

However, the Supreme Court later found in favour of HMRC when they ruled that the way Rangers used EBTs had breached British tax law.
