Pure, athletic, Thatcherism

935

It’s all politics.  Not actual politics, in the strict definition of the word, but clubs’ dealings with the SPFL and SFA is mostly about politically manoeuvring in the direction to win your argument.

Experienced political operators will tell you not to fight the same people on too many points; pick the important areas to win and take a few defeats on the chin.  Box the SPFL into a corner by not charging season ticket holders for entry into play-off matches, and you’re onto a sure win.  But all SPFL clubs are members of the SFA.

They all like being given their place.  If I wanted something important from the SFA, like exemption from the rule prohibiting directors of a liquidated club from subsequently becoming a club director, I’d concentrate on that and ask politely for permission to let season ticket holders into games.

But I realise there are different types of political animal.  The consensus political animal is effective in certain times, then there are those who have a self-righteous tone to rules.  It’s their way or the highway.  To paraphrase Bob Shankly, pure, athletic, Thatcherism.  Britain wasn’t ready for Thatcherism 30 years ago.  She won in 1979 and lost lots of votes second time around in ’83, but the Labour vote split.  The 80s were lean.  For some.

Scottish football is in for a period where a self-righteous entity will muster its forces.  The media coverage will reflect what we saw in politics in the 80s.  The consensus operators must stand firm and unite.

Thanks to all who entered the Magners completion for premium tickets to the Dundee game tomorrow night, the winner will be notified within the next 30 mins, so check your email!

There’s the Sun newspaper and there’s another Sun newspaper. With different headlines and recommendations, one advocating Cameron the other Sturgeon

    Or are they so different?

The Scottish Sun could not possibly advocate Cameron to Scottish readers or else circulation would shrivel up, and since they want Cameron in, they recommend anyone else who will stop Labour getting votes in Scotland. Step forward wee Nicola.

A vote for independence was a vote for the SNP and to try and dress that up any other way is nonsense as they were the party pushing the issue.

Scotland will suffer more than any other part of the UK if the Tories get back in and Sturgeon will no doubt blame Labour when it all goes horribly wrong.

  10. Struggling to find a party I would give my vote to. Where I am it is a choice between either Lib Dem or SNP, Labour have a proverbial snow ball in hells chance. No party that would actively stand up for the underprivileged in our society in other words no real Socialist candidates. Watched Scottish question on the BBC this morning. Reminded of a primary school playground. Sturgeon gave a master class in political obfuscation when pressed about another indy ref in the near future. I believe we are going to get another Tory government due to the demise of Scots labour which strangely may end any chance of another indy ref for the foreseeable future.

I voted yes for a chance to change things as did the majority of others.

The SNP may well have designs on ruling Scotland and you would be a fool to think otherwise.

Remember Scotland would still be a democratic country when it becomes independant. We would them get a chance to vote for the party that represented us. The SNP would rebrand but I wouldn’t vote for them.

Irrespective of the Rangers fans supporting a club we knew for years where cheating, that should not be used as an argument to not support Labour.

Mr Salmond claimed they were an institution and tried to get them saved, even speaking to Cameron about it but Celtic fans still voted SNP in the referendum.

A minor point and I think I know what you imply, but it was not possible to vote SNP at the referendum. The choice was Yes or No. Or are you implying that No voters voted for the Labour/Tory coalition?

    Gravediggers’ Strike[edit]

A notorious industrial action during the winter(Addendum `78 `79), and one which was later frequently referred to by Conservative politicians, was the strike by gravediggers, members of the GMWU in Liverpool and in Tameside near Manchester.[7] Eighty gravediggers being on strike, Liverpool City Council hired a factory in Speke to store the corpses until they could be buried. The Department of Environment noted that there were 150 bodies stored at the factory at one point, with 25 more added every day. The reports of unburied bodies caused concern with the public.[8] On 1 February a persistent journalist asked the Medical Officer of Health for Liverpool, Dr Duncan Bolton, what would be done if the strike continued for months, Bolton speculated that burial at sea would be considered. Although his response was hypothetical, in the circumstances it caused great alarm. Other alternatives were considered, including allowing the bereaved to dig their own graves, deploying troops, and engaging private contractors to inter the bodies. The main concerns were said to be aesthetic because bodies could be safely stored in heat-sealed bags for up to six weeks.[8] Bolton later reported being ‘horrified’ by the sensationalised reportage of the strike in the mass media.[9] The gravediggers eventually settled for a 14% rise after a fortnight’s strike.

Yet more unrelenting SNP bashing on CQN. It’s hard to comment at times as I’m sure we all generally want the same things; NHS, good schools, quality of life. Politically we are probably about 90% aligned on everything.

The Labour Party is the most significant party ever in the UK – one that had beliefs and actioned them. They were for a while a party of the people.

Now Labour offers virtually nothing except the ‘less bad’ option. Totally beholden to corporations, they offer only a longer race to the bottom than the tories.

They have been bought out, as have the unions; the Unite leader on £140,000 pa. What a joke. I’m sure we won’t see anything radical from this guy.

I, along with the majority of Scotland, have had enough. We want to redraw the political arena we live in. I’d take an Old labour majority in Scotland at the drop of a hat. We won’t have a chance of this in the UK. You will have right wing politics rammed down your throat til you die, as part of the UK.

If you are an old Labour guy, you’ll find the Green manifesto is actually your political home. Smash the Union, then vote socialist. Yee ha!

I bet if we had a pint and a political discussion we would agree on the vast majority of policy issues. To me independence is about taking control of Scotland’s affairs, budget and policies. In an independent Scotland I would probably vote Labour (with a chance that a Scottish Labour party would be a bit more socialist). Until that is the case I won’t vote Labour.

I don’t recall Scotland heaving leftwards between 1999 and 2007 until Labour either to be honest. But to be fair Labour did give us devolution.
