Pure, athletic, Thatcherism

935

It’s all politics.  Not actual politics, in the strict definition of the word, but clubs’ dealings with the SPFL and SFA is mostly about politically manoeuvring in the direction to win your argument.

Experienced political operators will tell you not to fight the same people on too many points; pick the important areas to win and take a few defeats on the chin.  Box the SPFL into a corner by not charging season ticket holders for entry into play-off matches, and you’re onto a sure win.  But all SPFL clubs are members of the SFA.

They all like being given their place.  If I wanted something important from the SFA, like exemption from the rule prohibiting directors of a liquidated club from subsequently becoming a club director, I’d concentrate on that and ask politely for permission to let season ticket holders into games.

But I realise there are different types of political animal.  The consensus political animal is effective in certain times, then there are those who have a self-righteous tone to rules.  It’s their way or the highway.  To paraphrase Bob Shankly, pure, athletic, Thatcherism.  Britain wasn’t ready for Thatcherism 30 years ago.  She won in 1979 and lost lots of votes second time around in ’83, but the Labour vote split.  The 80s were lean.  For some.

Scottish football is in for a period where a self-righteous entity will muster its forces.  The media coverage will reflect what we saw in politics in the 80s.  The consensus operators must stand firm and unite.

Thanks to all who entered the Magners completion for premium tickets to the Dundee game tomorrow night, the winner will be notified within the next 30 mins, so check your email!

It’s only SNP loving YES voters who appear on the blog in the run up to a vote dontcha know :))

I ripped up my Labour Party card when they became Tory Light ( or is that Right). They have sold out the working class.

I think the way to tackle the self righteous is to present them with hard evidence of their adherence to the 3Ds.

    Deceit, duplicity and disingenuousness

Then present that to the world.

Ernie, probably, but the dream scenario for the SNP would be a majority Labour Government that tanked. Much like the last one. Nowhere to turn to then.

    I disagree.

    They want a Tory government.

That’s why they’re advising people in the rest of the UK to vote for the Greens or Plaid Cymru, not Labour.

That’s why they’re going out of the way to antagonise the English and attempting to stoke up English nationalism, which is just as ugly as Scottish nationalism. Their allies in the Tory party are of course playing along with it.

Morning (over here in Atlanta anyway)

Party bashing seems fairly evenly distributed on here this morning.

    Labour are Tory Light.

Lib-Dems are so irrelevant they don’t even get a mention.

Tory’s are only referred to as a benchmark for insulting Labour.

SNP are a dupe to stop Labour and help the Tories.

Gravediggers strike was a localised dispute and dealt with. Not pleasant for the bereaved. At all.

The measures you describe for storage of bodies are still in place. They are in place for a number of reasons.

    Here’s the deal.

Loadsa people die and bodies remain unburied.

Reasons likely are your old pal that you keep bringing up like Yorrick that no-one will bury them.

    An epidemic. SARS. Bird Flu.

    Ebola,or similar.

A serious escalation of geopolitical sabre-rattling goes wrong.

There are various possibilities that could lead to bodies being unburied. In far greater numbers than you mentioned earlier.

    That’s why Civil Contingency exists.

Guess what? The answer is still cold storage.

Ernie we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

TBH, I feel antagonisation of the english is long gone in our culture, compared to years gone by. Also, the SNP appear to be fighting a very clean campaign, with no antagonisation of England; unless we call being Scottish and democratic, antagonistic.

Personally, despite the usual talk, I don’t see any significant difference between tory and labour. They’ll both fully endorse TAFTA. The NHS will slowly be privatised. We will kill civilians abroad, and argue over the crumbs left on the table.

I’m not going to change your, or anyone else’s mind. All I would urge is labour / snp supporters to check out the Green manifesto. We have proportional representation of sorts in the scot parly and it wouldn’t be a wasted vote.

Big freedom bird for me next weekend mate, so if you’re about tomorrow….

  30. So politics is a valid topic for Celtic Quick News?

Influencing votes based on your own understandings and perceptions is not something I respect or advocate. Each person has their own experiences and individual needs so to base your vote on a projected and hypothetical outcome plus relying on a party to deliver it’s pre-election promises is naive in the extreme. This goes for all parties. Vote on your own feelings and instincts. Is the leader trustworthy ? Have they delivered majority of election promises ? Do they care about your community ?

My personal opinion is that the difference between Labour and Tories these days are so slight that it would hardly change anything other than them all moving to opposite sides of the House of Commons until it’s the others turn again. SNP will never get an independent Scotland nor will they run government but they will fight the corner of Scotland more than any other party whilst staying truer than the rest to protect the social welfare pillars needed north of M25.

Do we even have a democracy ? I would argue against and I pray that the real decision makers behind the curtain do not continue on the destructive path of flicking Russia on the nose and cease destroying civilised countries with UN recognised sovereignly elected governments in middle east when they dare turn away from USA. The innocent blood spilled is utterly scandalous and is more news worthy than the false promises of two parties who continue is down the dark alley !

I’ve had enough! Looking at the bald statistics, it’s evident that SPFL (doubtless with Celtic’s unseen support) act to schedule Celtic Home matches directly opposite my son’s team’s fixtures.

It started with the first home game of the season being switched to a midweek, midseason game, then an entire series of games switched en masse from Saturdays to Sundays.

Now, this Friday’s match is to be played at the same time as the Lanarkshire Schools Cup Final.

From the 19 home ties in the SPFL, 11 have been scheduled opposite the boys’ matches. That’s almost 60%, and 5 standard deviations from the mean.

If it wasn’t so obvious you’d dismiss it as flight of fancy, but the statistics don’t lie.

Saying that, if I’m bummed out, how’s he feeling? Out injured since November, started playing again this month, and with the Cup Final on Friday, what did he do last Sunday?

    Tore his hamstring.

    Out.

To be fair to the school’s coach, he’s insisting the boy gets stripped and sits on the bench in order to qualify as a member of the final squad. Nice touch.
