Pure, athletic, Thatcherism

935

It’s all politics.  Not actual politics, in the strict definition of the word, but clubs’ dealings with the SPFL and SFA is mostly about politically manoeuvring in the direction to win your argument.

Experienced political operators will tell you not to fight the same people on too many points; pick the important areas to win and take a few defeats on the chin.  Box the SPFL into a corner by not charging season ticket holders for entry into play-off matches, and you’re onto a sure win.  But all SPFL clubs are members of the SFA.

They all like being given their place.  If I wanted something important from the SFA, like exemption from the rule prohibiting directors of a liquidated club from subsequently becoming a club director, I’d concentrate on that and ask politely for permission to let season ticket holders into games.

But I realise there are different types of political animal.  The consensus political animal is effective in certain times, then there are those who have a self-righteous tone to rules.  It’s their way or the highway.  To paraphrase Bob Shankly, pure, athletic, Thatcherism.  Britain wasn’t ready for Thatcherism 30 years ago.  She won in 1979 and lost lots of votes second time around in ’83, but the Labour vote split.  The 80s were lean.  For some.

Scottish football is in for a period where a self-righteous entity will muster its forces.  The media coverage will reflect what we saw in politics in the 80s.  The consensus operators must stand firm and unite.

Thanks to all who entered the Magners completion for premium tickets to the Dundee game tomorrow night, the winner will be notified within the next 30 mins, so check your email!

Good luck to your bhoy’s team on Friday.

As for school/youth players and injuries.

My elder son played for Reading Schools and when he was 15 was also playing for Reading FC youth side.

On the Friday night playing for the Schools he broke his nose.

On the Saturday morning the Reading FC youth team was running a thin squad so the coach put him on. Two minutes in he got the ball smacked into his face at point blank range. Only time I ever remember him getting the ball in the face, and it had to be that morning.

Youth coaches in those days were very often just friends of the first team manager, guys who had been on the sauce for so long that they couldn’t hold down a regular job and needed a favour.

Your son’s school coach seems a good man.

I am not sure about Denayer taking over from VK at Man City. I rate him. In fact, I think he has been the best player in Scotland this year, and would love to see him back at CP next year. But think the pull of a better league will probably win out. Not sure it would be the right decision for him, though.

For a CH, he is not tall and is not that strong in the air. I think, at a higher level of football, he might struggle against a good physical striker (Lewandowski would destroy him, at the moment). Sure he is young, and will improve, but I think he will end up playing more as a midfielder at some point.

There is so little between Labour and Conservative now, that they’re as well just amalgamating formally. Any differences between them are essentially internal disputes, issues of management and style.

Labour dropped the banner decades ago with the advent of what we now recognise as careerism in politics.

Other parties have since picked it up.

Can hardly apportion blame for that to those former Labour voters who, in the absence of a meaningful Labour option, back other parties that better represent their values.

  17. Poor Gordon Brown.

He is apparent only now realising what a lot of us knew on the morning og September 19th last year. That is that Cameron was very publicly shafting those members of Scottish Labour who had stood four square with him during the Referendum Campaign.

In this case, those who stood with the craws were shot in the back by the craws.

I think that next season he will play alongside VK, and if all works out he would assume the mantle.

Jason has pace and skill and courage. He is decent but not exceptional in the air. His biggest issue for me is concentration and that is something that he can improve on with an older hand beside him. VVD is not that kind of partner for Jason.

He has grasped the chance at Celtic with both hands, won trophies (SPFL to come), young player of the year and has competed against sides in Europe.

City have been poor this season and have an aging squad. Very sorry if he left Celtic but he is their player after all.

His happiness at Celtic and his friendship with VVD might sway him personally, but Man City have problems, particularly in defence.

Denayer too small and light to be a CB in EPL IMO.He might make it as a defensive MF,another year up here, specially if we get to CL,would suit all parties.

  25. I do not for a minute believe that come next Thursday, the SNP will win anything like forty five or fifty seats.

Equally I believe that come Friday morning, a fair number of formers Scottish Mps will reflect on the reality of the old biblical quote that runs’ Be ye not deceived, the Lord is not mocked, a man shall reap what he sows’.

For too many years in parts of Scotland the People’s Party took its supporters for granted.

You could be right. But I like the way he brings the ball out from the back. I think he could develop into a top notch holding mid. Would love it to be at Celtic park, but like you, I wont get my hopes up on that. Not sure we will be close to being able to match what other teams will offer him.

Off to court. Have a good day lads.

What is the meeja gonnae do? What is it they are going to demand? Fit an proper Dave King? Yes please. Go right ahead.

The only thing that they could demand that would help their favoured stadium renters would be a compulsory 2- 0 head start in every game for Govan Wanderers. And that other teams have to only play with 9 men in every game.

The lying king and sevco deserve each other.
