Pure, athletic, Thatcherism

935

It’s all politics.  Not actual politics, in the strict definition of the word, but clubs’ dealings with the SPFL and SFA is mostly about politically manoeuvring in the direction to win your argument.

Experienced political operators will tell you not to fight the same people on too many points; pick the important areas to win and take a few defeats on the chin.  Box the SPFL into a corner by not charging season ticket holders for entry into play-off matches, and you’re onto a sure win.  But all SPFL clubs are members of the SFA.

They all like being given their place.  If I wanted something important from the SFA, like exemption from the rule prohibiting directors of a liquidated club from subsequently becoming a club director, I’d concentrate on that and ask politely for permission to let season ticket holders into games.

But I realise there are different types of political animal.  The consensus political animal is effective in certain times, then there are those who have a self-righteous tone to rules.  It’s their way or the highway.  To paraphrase Bob Shankly, pure, athletic, Thatcherism.  Britain wasn’t ready for Thatcherism 30 years ago.  She won in 1979 and lost lots of votes second time around in ’83, but the Labour vote split.  The 80s were lean.  For some.

Scottish football is in for a period where a self-righteous entity will muster its forces.  The media coverage will reflect what we saw in politics in the 80s.  The consensus operators must stand firm and unite.

So should we have FFA within the same timescale as we were going to have independence ie 18months or so?

    If not, why not?

And does it mean we (ie Scotland because that’s how the nats want us to think of matters, the notion of class conflict doesn’t exist for a nat) be better off or worse off?

  2. All this arguing about politics, wow!! Don’t people realise that you can always tell when a politician is lying by the fact his lips are moving. Always always , jam tomorrow.

    re ‘cobbling together’

A government in the UK requires Commons support from a minimum of 326 MPs.

From what I can gather, given current projections, the Conservatives will not be able to achieve this without the support of the Labour party.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen how the seats divide between the various parties, but the indications right now are, that if there’s a Tory govt after the election, it will be there only with Labour support.

    Which seems somewhat unlikely.

  4. If Celtic can somehow persuade young Jason and big Virgil, the future at Celtic is bright, then maybe just they may sign a long term deal. maybe just. Wouldn’t it be nice??

Bawsman hello again! I think it is a myth that scotland is conservative.

From 10,00 troops and tanks sent to george square to crush a would be socialist revolution in 1919, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_George_Square

to the country returning a socialist vote in the vast majority of elections, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elections_in_Scotland#1945

massive trade union membership, to the SSP gaining massive traction only halted by a sex scandal, it would be fairer to say Scotland is a demonstrably hard left socialist, and awaiting a party that meets it’s aspirations.

    ernie,

I try to answer your questions as best I can, but unless you tell me what your definition of “better off” is, I’m stumped I’m afraid.

If you want answers on policy though, I suggest you ask them of a member or official of any party who promotes such an approach. I can’t help you there.

Meantime, best not to attempt to draw inference when there’s no corollary implication. It comes over a little obtusely, and if I may say so, seems somewhat rude.

  16. My friends in Celtic,

The one constant and sure thing we will wake up to next Friday is that we will still be Celtic supporters. Apart from death and taxation, everythingi else is variable.

There are two main reasons imo that make politics and football ( particularly Celtic ) intertwined.

    1) A heavy vote for the nationalists will make it that much more difficult to leave the anti Celtic cesspit that is the Scottish football establishments.

    2) When I see Celtic supporters collecting for food banks I cannot fathom why the SNP government have a £440m underspend from last year. We talk about austerity cuts and we deprive the poorest of £444m. No wonder the Sun is backing both the Snp and the Tories. To me it’s two sides of the same coin.

    HH.

  18. Warning. Football (Non Celtic) Post

    From BBC

Queen of the South will charge for Premiership play-offs

Queen of the South will charge season ticket holders for the Scottish Premiership play-offs – unlike some of their potential opponents.

Rangers revealed plans on Tuesday to allow season ticket holders in for free after Motherwell insisted they would do the same should they be involved.

    Hibernian could follow suit.

“Our season ticket is deliberately priced so that it allows entry to 18 league games at the cost of 16 games,” said a Queens statement.

A Scottish Professional Football League levy means that 50% of gate receipts go to clubs not involved in the play-offs.

Hibs, who allowed season ticket holders in for free last season despite those guidelines, last week failed in a bid to half the gate receipts levy to 25% cent in a compromise resolution.

“We are conscious of the debate between some of our play-off rivals and the SPFL regarding whether or not season ticket holders will be given free or cheaper access to these games,” added Queens.

“Notwithstanding what may or may not be decided by the league in this respect, we have always expected that our season ticket holders would pay for the play-off games – as they did last season and as they have for any cup match – and budgeted our costs on that basis.

  19. Bawsman

No problem with that at all. I agree. The problem with the Union of Britain is it is not progressive, as I believe your goal would be. Monarchism, and Westminster first past the post is draconian. I’m my view that will never change in a British union.

Indeed, it is my view that the SNP were not going to deliver independence. What they were offering was dominion status.

However, I’ve seen some unionist rhetoric that surprises me.

I certainly understand your final point. I worry about my child growing up and what opportunities will be there for him.

I’m certainly not here to fall out with anyone. I’ve had enough of all that online nonsense. I’m just joining in I suppose and giving my views. I don’t expect everyone, or indeed anyone to agree with them.

I do believe that the Union is a busted flush. Real change is needed in many aspects of ‘British’ society. The main Westminster parties really don’t have the appetite for the changes that are needed.

I voted tactically for the SNP in 2011 in the promise of a referendum. They failed in the referendum and gave us Stephen House and the OBA. Never again. I’ll probably vote Green as it stands at the moment.
