Qarabag assistant suggests defensive tactics

410

Qarabag assistant manager, Avtandil Hajiyev, spoke to the media ahead of tomorrow’s game against Celtic. This is what he had to say:

“Celtic were strong favourites before the first leg but the 0-1 score suggests that nothing is over yet. The main struggle for both teams lies ahead.

“It’s a pity the game was not on TV as you would have seen that we had the advantage.

“We played well throughout the game, although you could not point to one single area where we were most dominant, but there were periods when Qarabag were on top. If you take the game as a whole, we performed better than Celtic.

“A small defeat away was a good result. Celtic are strong, they even managed to beat Barcelona at home. Eorpean clubs have difficulty at Celtic Park, but we provided decent resistance. 0-1 is not so depressing, we can achieve a result this week which will allow us to progress.

“Tactically, there is little difference between a 0-0 and a 0-1 defeat. We know we have to score one goal with either result to stay in the tie, so our approach will not change because of the goal.

“The return game will also be defensive but we will attack more. The Scots know and have probably already analysed our attacks, but I believe Gurban Gurbanov (Qarabeg manager) will have a few surprises in attack.

“The players have had time to analyse what happened in the first game. Our preparations are complete.

“Celtic can score in Baku but I believe the Qarabag defence will play safe and keep their goal intact.”

It’s a pity we all missed those periods when Qarabag were on top.

Really don’t feel we are best suited to be sitting back and protecting 1-0 for 90 minutes.

Also sure we are il-advised to be following our esteemed keeper’s opinion that we will be “chasing” an away goal.

Let’s wait and see how these guys set up and contain at the appropriate level as things develop, the look to pick them off for that crucial away goal.

I’m not his biggest fan anymore, and he might be an even bigger gamble on a dry bumpy pitch, but we have watched James Forrest make significant contributions in these situations before. It could be

a great opportunityfor the wee man to step up and answer his critics.

There was at least one burst of pace away from mid and past Ross Co defence on Saturday to suggest he might be finding his early form.

So all things considered I will watching his contribution very closely.

An assist or better still an away goal for Jamesy. Having a wee affordable punt on that one!

  9. It seems that to get a seat on the board over at poundland you need to own a bus.

First there was Sandy with McGills buses and his super duper, hun bus that probably ended up as the subject of an insurance claim with no witnesses to its demise.

Then there was the Parks of Hamilton bus owner who lasted about 6 months at poundland before getting off at the next stop.

When I think back to earlier days on CQN, we regularly had the “easily offended” bus that frequently turned up during heated debates about political correctness. Is that bus worthy of a seat on the board at poundland? Probably not? Not so much PC behaviour at sevcoland, is there?

I often sat upstairs on a number 64 corporation bus to and from paradise,

Just for the record that corporation bus was green, white and gold, green, white and gold, green white and gold

but I doubt if anyone on that particular green white and gold, green white and gold, green white and gold, corporation bus would get a seat on the poundland board. I would explain why, but Im feart that the explanation would cause the easily offended bus to re appear!

Good ambassadorial work from Celtic…these small acts will be well remembered. However, 35 degrees heat plus rutted pitch plus early goal concession plus dodgy ref will mean defeat by the necessary two goals…( oh ye of little faith)…Sorry guys.

I know we all want Celtic to go through tomorrow evening and I am sure that, mixed with a quiet confidence, is a worrying knock that we might not go through. So, let me give the dispassionate view of William Hill.

To Qualify: Qarabag 4/1 Celtic 1/7.

As they have only put those odds on very recently, I have to assume that they reflect Hill`s view rather than being governed by money laid.

Alternatively, there aren’t too many Qarabag fans with accounts at Hill’s.

4/1 for the home team in a two legged tie, with only a goal in it? Mental odds.

If I was a gambling man, a disembodied gambling man to boot, I’d have a bang on that.

Saying that, if I was a gambling man I’d be skint.

  18. Don’t have a good feeling about tomorrow night.

Team not in form, hot conditions, bad pitch, 4000 km from home, big crowd with only a few Celts amongst them, unknown Brazilians and the knowledge that in a lot of these games, we’re 2-0 down after 8 minutes or so.

Strangely enough, I would be more confident had the first leg ended 0-0.

Delighted to be proved wrong tomorrow.

  19. I am highly confident we will score tomorrow ,

Of all the factors mentioned, heat, pitch, distance travelled, time zones etc, my biggest worry would be our rather flat form so far this season. Having said that, what a perfect time this would be to find some form.

  24. 67Heaven – I hate this time of the season. Everything rests on these games and we’ve just come into August.

I blame Gorbachev – if the Soviet Union hadn’t broken up, there would be 20 to 30 less teams in these qualifying rounds.

Actually, that should be ’20 to 30 fewer teams’ for the pedants in here ?

Only joking, of course, and you are almost certainly correct that there are not too many said fans. There are, however, a great many gamblers who keep a keen eye on what they consider a decent bet. Be interesting if the Qarabag odds tumble,
