Question Peter will ask Brendan in May

290

Can we step back for a moment and look at Brendan Rodgers considerations for Odsonne Eduard this season?  In May, Peter Lawwell is going to ask the manager if he wants to pay PSG €10m to make his transfer permanent.

To answer that question Brendan will need to a firm view on how Odsonne compares to other candidates, with similar profiles to him and Olivier Ntcham.  They will all be a risk, but the manager needs to strengthen his team, so he must give himself the best possible information before committing.

One of the benefits of playing in Scotland is that we can afford to give a young talent an extended run in the team without affecting our title chances.  We can make changes which will have a negative impact on short-term performances, but will improve our long-term prospects.

There is another side of the player acquisition equation to consider.  Brendan had to convince Odsonne and Olivier that Celtic was the right club for them.  To do this, he pointed to Moussa Dembele, who was given his chance.  What young players attached to tier-one wealthy clubs want more than anything else (apart from money) is a game time.

Whether Odsonne makes it at Celtic or not, you can be sure Brendan will point to the opportunities he has to make an impression when he speaks to other targets.

Over the last 48 hours our lead at the top of the table went from 8 to 11 points, while giving a young player time on the field.  Leigh and Moussa know the script and are happy to concentrate on their own game, while allowing the manager to worry about youth development.

  1. See Jim McInally giving short shrift, to the latest “old firm” initiative. He doesn’t want the Colts in SPFL 2. Must say this this seems like a half baked plan, we know Sevco are having issues funding reserves/development squads, but it doesnt mean other Clubs Leagues have to get disrupted and bent out of shape. We should not be aiding and abetting them neither.

If it presents no problems to adjust the lower leagues to accomodate Colts, then why not grant membership to progressive non league clubs to join the pyramid.

The ship has long sailed for this idea.

Why not canvas the top clubs and if there are enough votes for the idea, then reconstitute the Reserve League for those clubs willing, and can afford to run, a second team, to compete.

There can be a rule permitting x number of first team players.

    PS.

I know why the Reserve League was scrubbed.

  3. I guess Paul67 is setting expectations.

Seems so from his latest missives.

    Willo Flood anyone?

    Old Firm anyone?

What happened to the CL money? the virgil money?

Forget about Europe. We have records to set.

  4. Tonight I had a wee Burns supper with Mrs PMTYH. However I had trouble procuring one of the essential ingredients:

    Tatties – check

    Carrots – check

    Broon Sauce – check

    Pepper – check

    MacSween haggis – check

Neeps – xx Bruneian locally grown turnip just not the same.

Didn’t spoil the meal though – the haggis was excellent. Whisky substituted with Gin as neither of us are whisky drinkers. Life can be hard at times.

I can’t see Brendan blowing most of his budget on one player. When push comes to shove the Griffalo and/ or Moussa will lead the line. I don’t know what is going on at CP but I don’t think we are looking at Odsonne to fill the centre forward role on a permanent basis. I could be wrong but Peter would be looking for assurances that €10 million was going to be at least doubled in 3 years with a future sell on.

  5. Just listened to the cqn podcast with John Fallon (TOHG) a great listen if you haven’t already.

I’ve been lucky enough to meet John at the corner before the games, a true gentleman.

  6. Edoure,2 million and that’s being generous, who in the development squad player is the Centre Forward, and how good is he.

You forgot to mention your other essential ingredient at a Burns supper. The Selkirk grace.

    Which one did you pick?

Wait. I know already…Holy Willies prayer.

    Am I right? :)

  8. CultsBhoy- Last of the famous international PlayBhoys on

    P67 spot on.

However Odsonne won’t need too many more chances to confirm BR thoughts on his long term future at Celtic. Unless he has a miraculous elevation in goal return and general play I think we can all safely assume it will be ‘thanks but no thanks’ in May.

Meanwhile I’m happy with strategy. We are in line for another treble. We’ve got shot of players who were not going to improve the team. We have money in the bank to capitalise on opportunities that WILL materialize as the EPL shake down reaches its final stages.

Nobody the Huns have signed would get in our best 11…so no comparisons there to consider.

I’d still like John McGinn, a right back and a centre half.

Boyata or Simonovic given marching orders and one let as reserve.

If however we don’t recruit we are in reasonable shape domestically.

Personally I don’t think the club is yet in a position to strengthen sufficiently to compete in Europe much beyond our current efforts.

We don’t have the lure or money to attract 3 or 4 £50m players.

  9. THOMTHETHIM @ 2:29 PM,

Agreed, the reserve league was working fine and had been for many, many Seasons before one Club was going for 10iar;)

If there are Colt Teams to be played in the lower leagues and I’m not totally against it perse. Then it you be done on sporting merit.

Say a Club in the relegation zone in SPFL 2, The winner of the Highland League, The winner of the Lowland League and the winner of the Development League play-off.

The winner gets a promotion (or to stays) in the SPFL 2.

Obviously there must be rules regarding the Colt Team but it could be promoted or demoted just as any other team, barring sharing the same league as their Clubs first Team.

It gives junior teams a chance and the Development team only gets there on merit. This system doesn’t bend any SPFL Divisions out of shape.

Just listened to the cqn podcast with John Fallon (TOHG) a great listen if you haven’t already.

*really enjoyed it but he was a wee bit better tempered than the last one I listened too lol, the air was bit blue on that one until his wife entered the room. No great fan of the Big Mhan, then again I’ve heard others like the late and great TG and Brogie saying similar, loved how some of the players stuck up for him.

I heard the story abut the bevvy in the drawer before only it was rum and coke, when I told older Tims at the time they wurnae for having it. Glad he confirmed it.

  11. We are in a fortunate position of having Eddie for another 4 months before deciding if we want to sign him. Based on what we’ve seen I’d say we should but I guess we’ll see over the next 20 or so games. Interestingly his 5 goals have come at 146 mons per goal, slightly worse than Moussa who is 134 mins per goals this season but surprisingly better than Griff who is 157 mins per goal.

I think Eddie is a better link up player than the other two, at the moment not a better finisher. But he’s only turned 20 last week so has a lot of time on his side.

  12. http://www.france24.com/en/20170903-football-psg-ffp-uefa-financial-fair-play-rules-neymar-mbappe

The idea that Celtic should pay PSG anything near millions for Eduardo is ludicrous, at best I would put him in the same bracket as Lewis Morgan work in progress but nowhere near what we need for next years Champions League. We have been told we need to buy now for the qualifying rounds, then we’re told you don’t` get value for money at this time of the year,What is it to be?As for the strikers the Griff should be the man,his attitude on the park is Iam your man whereas Moussa is look at me Iam not happy as illustrated by his slow walk off at the Sevco game.

  13. From Italian website (Calciomercato), probably their equivelant of HITC and other click bait transfer sites here.

Moussa Dembele has been offered to Roma, according to the latest reports from Italy.

ASRomaLive.it write that the Frenchman is on his way out of Parkhead, but it is uncertain as to whether the Giallorossi want him.

The Celtic striker has struggled to stay fit this season, and has been the victim of a number of injuries.

The Giallorossi are set to sell Edin Dzeko to Chelsea, with the Pensioners reported to be ready to spend 50 million on the Bosnian and team-mate Emerson Palmieri.

With Gregoire Defrel flattering to deceive this season, Roma may need a striker in the January window.

Dembele has been regularly left on the bench this season, and is being primed for a move away. The 21-year-old made a name for himself last season when he netted a hat-trick against Rangers in a 5-1 rout.

He has netted eight goals in 21 games this season.

It just seems to be a ham fisted shoe- horn job , to accommodate them.

Whatever happened to the Govan Proposal to nurture their youth via “high prestige” European opposition?

It seems that we would have to register a squad for the season, which would render them unavailable for the first team, should a need, or a desire arise where it would be appropriate tobring a lad into the first team.

    Interesting…

In every deal this window Sevco have offered the first down payment May thru August…

I can’t believe they offered the Accies any different.

Interestingly up til now all Clubs have rejected this payment plan, so why did skint Hamilton agree?

Think you maybe right… Maybe Park had a word with himself and decided it was best for both Clubs…

  22. THOMTHETHIM @ 3:27 PM,

As the proposal stands it seems to be just as you describe…

I think Sevco’s plan to withdraw from the Development League to play more prestige Teams was to my way of thinking, a funding exercise.

Oldco said in 2009 they couldn’t afford to run a Reserve team, this was the time they were funding the EBT scam.

Now we want to get involved in this!?

Celtic have four or five development lhads bolstering our first team, this means we are not forking out for “squad players”, and giving the Academy bhoys, experience and “reward” for hard work and performance.

Do they go into the Colts? Then as you say can’t be used in the first team.

The proposal states only two overage players are allowed…

Surely if a better mix of youth and experience, like the old reserves, was allowd, some of the older Celts, instead of moving on could go into the Colts, give the youngsters the benefit of their experience, mentor them in the “Celtic way” and do their Coaching badges.

There are advantages in running ‘B’, reserve or colt teams but the way this Pilot is set up I see no benefit.

Which brings a cynic like me to believe that this “old firm” proposal/pilot Will not be the set-up going forward.

  23. VFR800 is now a Monster 821 on

I see Brendan Rodgers was unequivocal when discussing Moussa Dembele: he has never asked to leave; Celtic aren’t interested in selling; only one unsuitable bid has come in and was rejected; the lhad and his agent has a plan which doesn’t include leaving Celtic just now.

Seems clear that unless some silly money bid comes in from a big team (i.e. not Brighton, Crystal palace, Stoke, WBA etc.) then he is staying!

There certainly are, the SFA are very strict on this, in fact you can’t have a controlling influence in a Scottish Club if you have one not only in the SFA but another Association.

Which is the reason Mike Ashley (a controlling stake in a FA Club) was summoned to tell the SFA what his “intentions” were for Sevco Rangers.

Couldn’t be one rule for one, one rule for another could it?

Looking at the past 5 results when we have hit the slump again, we have collected 13 points from 15. Our 2 closest rivals have collected 7 each. So our lead has increased by 6 points recently. Not a bad situation for a team that is seemingly going backwards!
