Question Peter will ask Brendan in May

290

Can we step back for a moment and look at Brendan Rodgers considerations for Odsonne Eduard this season?  In May, Peter Lawwell is going to ask the manager if he wants to pay PSG €10m to make his transfer permanent.

To answer that question Brendan will need to a firm view on how Odsonne compares to other candidates, with similar profiles to him and Olivier Ntcham.  They will all be a risk, but the manager needs to strengthen his team, so he must give himself the best possible information before committing.

One of the benefits of playing in Scotland is that we can afford to give a young talent an extended run in the team without affecting our title chances.  We can make changes which will have a negative impact on short-term performances, but will improve our long-term prospects.

There is another side of the player acquisition equation to consider.  Brendan had to convince Odsonne and Olivier that Celtic was the right club for them.  To do this, he pointed to Moussa Dembele, who was given his chance.  What young players attached to tier-one wealthy clubs want more than anything else (apart from money) is a game time.

Whether Odsonne makes it at Celtic or not, you can be sure Brendan will point to the opportunities he has to make an impression when he speaks to other targets.

Over the last 48 hours our lead at the top of the table went from 8 to 11 points, while giving a young player time on the field.  Leigh and Moussa know the script and are happy to concentrate on their own game, while allowing the manager to worry about youth development.

Take a bow all of you who made the effort and took the time to contact your MSPs regarding the OBaF Act.

Today has shown what a lot of people doing their own wee bit can actually achieve.

Most credit due to the Celtic Trust, Fans Against Criminalisation and guys like yourself, C, for keeping it at the top of the news agenda and encouraging people to get involved and contact the politicians.

The two people who deserve most credit are Jeannette Findlay and wee Paul Quigley. Their intelligence, determination and persistence looks as though it will be deservedly rewarded!

Problem is the suits want euro football, or they want the money it brings and all the kudos that euro footy brings, yet they are reluctant to fork out for the privilage, they push the narative that we are a CL standard team, which in reality these days has to be taken with a large pinch of salt, we are at best a europa group team.

    Whatever :-)

Interesting posts. Not sure if either or both of you consider me to be in either the Happy Clapper or Mine Shafting fraternity ( or just a dull, verbose poster who you mainly scroll past) but I would like to think of myself as being in neither camp. I have, since 6 May 1970, rarely been hugely optimistic when it comes to Celtic which may explain the cautious tone of some of my posts however.

20 months ago when Brendan arrived I did think we would see more ‘box office’ signings than have materialised to date but also Sinclair , Dembele, Toure (briefly) and at times Ntcham have been very good indeed. Kouassi is a puzzle- he looks good to me but he seldom plays- whilst the rest have done less well. That we did not land a centre back last summer or sign one who was eligible for the Europa League seems , well, unfortunate. I am kind of with the mine shafters on this one.

The clamouring for a right back is understandable but how many saw this coming? Ralston looked a right sided Tierney in August and as recently as the last Hibs game Mikael was a hero. Ralston has disappeared and is, in my personal experience talking to fellow Celts, one of the few players who has got worse with every game he misses whilst I did not see Mikael’s collapse in form coming. BR should have envisaged all of this apparently.

Odsonne E. Well, not for me. A good debut and a splendid hat-trick v M’well but other than that not seeing much. But if we do sign him it will be interesting to see how people react. Think of the heated driveways we could have financed for €10m.

I enjoy watching Celtic. I walked out of Firhill the other night singing. It was not great but we came back from behind to win for the first time in a while ( this season?). Reading some here and elsewhere I felt like an idiot for daring to enjoy our comeback.

On the bus this morning I worked out that if it was the old 2 points a win days we would be on 38 points and 8 points ahead of Rangers. In the 9-I-A-R era that would end up on 56 points at the current rate. A wee bit below the going rate for the glory days but still ahead of 73-4 and 68/9 (arguably our post Lisbon zenith). Obviously we still have to end up earning the points- but hardly indicative of being as crap as so many seem to now think we are. The pessimist in me remembers 1979-80.

Sorry to have rabbited on so much but whilst I have my concerns I am also utterly fed up reading how bad our team is and how hopelessly weak/incompetent/unimaginative our manager is. Maybe we should have appointed Craig Levein instead.

  6. I don’t think Celtic will sign anyone else until a day or 2 before February 1st.

I think we will then have an answer from our 1st choice no. 10 and if it’s not going to happen then PL and BD will push the button on options B or C.

I still think we’ll buy John McGinn, but not until we sell a midfielder so probably in the summer.

Very best of luck to Liam Henderson- I have a great deal of respect for young guys who don’t take the easiest option when they have to move on.

I was just sitting there thinking – Big Moussa obviously wants to have 7 winners medals with Celtic in his pocket before his Real Madrid summer transfer– clever bhoy is Moussa.

I generally just lurk, but feel moved to post when I feel something is awry. I enjoy reading your posts. You have a quick wit, and have oftentimes caused me to laugh out loud, (which, btw, I assume was your intention!)

    SETTING FREE THE BEARS

You have posed an interesting question six, in fact. I have never thought of ‘managing expectations’ quite in that way. Since I raised it (at least latterly), let me respond. Firstly, it was not meant to be a jibe. I am neither wary nor sensitive about alternative opinions. It is a blog after all. I certainly do not dismiss alternative views as ‘brainwashed.’ I like a good argument, debate constantly with fellow Hoops fans, and I do not mind in the least being proved wrong. I’m still waiting for “old enough to know better” to kick in!

Not easy facing up to authority or those in charge, even if you have a good case, it takes good old fashioned bottle as no doubt those who are in FAC will have many stories to tell regarding what they have encountered on the journey, several non SNP MSP’s have replied to me all opposed to the act, one Monica Lennon also asked what I thought would help to confront Sectarianism which I thought was interesting. My own MSP did not even give me a reply but not surprised at all as she is SNP.

You conclude your eminent post with the words ” I hope I am wrong”.

I sincerely hope so too, however you make many thought provoking points that deserve to be evaluated.

It may be prudent to remember them going forward.

Did you leave Firhill and walk back along the nolly like you normally do?

There’s nothing in your post to debate for me, and I agree with all of it , especially like you suggest that there is a force constantly playing mind games with the Celtic support. Maybe we should ‘sign’ more failures on loan and do without a manager.

I hope there will always be Celtic wanting better than being number one.

When Brendan Rodgers talks about quality we should just sit back and listen, the pedigree of player better than Scott Sinclair Callum McGregor, Stuart Armstrong , Patrick Roberts, or whoever in the present Hoops, rarely becomes available mid- season.

I think we should rejoice in the fact he joins in with ‘here for 10 in a row’’ and wait and see whatever other

remarkable feat we achieve whilst he is here.

Enjoy your holiday.

  17. I’ve got to confess I’m getting ever so slightly twitchy as the transfer window moves towards the clunk sound.

I think we really need another quality centre half more than anything else right now. I’ll be extremely disappointed if nothing transpires. I’m saying this with next season’s CL qualifiers at the forefront of my mind.

  18. The Aberdeen fans’ forum gets choice perspective on their Sheeps’ woeful efforts against Sevco :)) –

“People say we lack fight against the Huns. I’d prefer that to what we actually do, which is to try & dry hump them.”

  19. Maybes someone should tell Pedro that we are currently nearing the end of the transfer window, where transfers for clubs to clubs happen, after all it was Pedro who said a while back that this window is very important for the forward planing process for the CL, ain’t that right Pedro, you weren’t trying to fool us were you, naw, he wouldn’t do that would our Pedro.

  20. HT-I don’t think we will bring anyone in that would be a first pick, was still getting replys today regarding the act today,Margaret Mitchell llb msp:-))

Entirely different sheep team fae this season’s either, two former huns players in the dugout, night and day.

    Thanks for your efforts mate.

BR has stated that they’re looking to bring in quality as opposed to quantity, I’m delighted to hear that but surely if we’re only identifying players for a couple of positions then several alternatives have been lined up?
