Questions for SFA as they inadvertently spotlight Nimmo Smith evidence

393

I know you don’t need to rehearse the Resolution 12 debate as you’ll know it instinctively now, but, as always, we are indebted to eyes outside of Scotland calling for insight and governance in the Scottish game on an issue only tangentially related.

Yesterday, The Offshore Game, ran a report that the SFA may have misled the Lord Nimmo Smith Commission inquiry into Rangers failure to register players on an industrial scale during their EBT years.

While the SFA were swatting away questions into how Rangers were cleared to participate in Uefa competitions in 2011, less than a year before disappearing into insolvency, chief operating officer, Andrew McKinlay inadvertently turned the spotlight on the reliability of evidence placed before Lord Nimmo Smith.

Questions around the awarding of Rangers Uefa licence in 2011 were asked in the dark as no one outside the club, SFA and Uefa knew what information had been submitted, and the SFA didn’t know what the club submitted to Uefa.

There was a belief that the club may have not disclosed a letter concerning the Wee Tax Case from HMRC to the SFA in 2011. Mr McKinlay wrote to the requisitioners saying that he “did not accept that” this information was not brought to the SFA’s attention in 2011 – two years before Nimmo Smith sat.

This assertion tidied up the Res 12 issue at Hampden, but as The Offshore Game makes clear, why on earth did the SFA’s evidence to Lord Nimmo Smith on the Wee Tax Case not reflect the correspondence they had on file? In short, it was accepted by all that schemes scrutinised by the Wee Tax Case were unlawful.

Nimmo Smith didn’t hear this, in fact, he heard was that Rangers tax schemes were legal, and concluded, therefore, as any other club could have used them, no sporting advantage was accrued.

The Offshore Game call for scrutiny of the SFA over this by the parliamentary Culture, Media and Sport select committee. This call will be magnified should the Supreme Court uphold HMRC’s position on the Big Tax Case.

Haven’t posted much recently. Lurked a lot. There are a lot of people who represent Celtic so well on here. HT especially demonstrated that today in his dealing with reactionary pish in a calm manner. No that he needs praise but he puts his money…

Enough of that niceness. I’m no good at it.

Not long in from Celtic Park.

Nae wages yet again despite begging though I did get a cup of tea and a Coca Cola from Harry Brady who normally is in his bed as soon as it gets dark.

All kidding aside, I saw first hand some of the work that is done by the foundation and heard some stories from people that they have helped.

Guys with Downs Syndrome, People with long term drug and drink problems, folk whose lives were so off the rails that they spent a fair wee while inside, and a mother who faced life with an autistic child who couldn’t deal with her condition and who tried to kill herself etc.

All of them helped by the foundation, all on the straight and narrow and clean, or now mother to a child who is much happier through the disability counts projects.

So many stories and so much good being done in the name of Celtic.

As many of you know and understand, I have no legal, contractual, official or unofficial connection with Celtic FC.

However, I grew up and was taught to love and wonder at what the club originally stood for and for what the supporters have done for many years.

Yes I love the football, I have always loved football, and over the course of a professional career I have had proper and contractual involvement with a number of junior clubs from time to time.

I have also enjoyed and followed other clubs like The Jags, or Clydebank or great sides like the 1970 Brazilian National Team or great individual players, but nothing touches the charitable side of the Celtic support.

That idea that this is beyond 90 minutes or a game of football, and that we will do what we do whether we win lose or draw, and that what we do best is make a difference and do something that is good for the benefit of others.

That is what is truly magic about Celtic for me.

Can I just thank everyone who contributed to the sleepout fund. I will be knackered all week but it was worth it. Thankyou.

Winning Captains caught me doing my doorman’s bit tonight and I was quickly pressganged into carrying books into the foyer.

Later, I got to meet Tom Campbell the Celtic author.

There are some great people who follow Celtic.

    What a lovely man.

This Kill Ultra controversy has me bamboozled awe day. What is the issue?

This is a blog. There is no onus for anyone to furnish anyone anything here.

The res12’r have used it as a publicity vehicle. That’s all ! Res 12 has nothing to do with CQN. What am I missing?

  20. Demanding run it to the winter break.

12 games in 6 weeks, so our squad will be severely tested.

Who is going to play left back tonight? Izzy probably hasn’t trained since his return.

We took 6 off Killie when they visited Celtic Park.

Their form is indifferent even at home where you’d think they’d have an advantage.

They beat Hearts 2-0 but dropped 4 to Aberdeen in October.

I hope we get any international break kinks out of our system and we return with the points and no injuries before we host Barcelona in a game we both need to win.

Barcelona to maintain their top place in the section, whereas we need to give ourselves a fighting chance of a Europa League spot when we visit Manchester.

Then we get a chance to secure our first silver of the season at Hampden against Aberdeen.

A win will put a cap on November and put us all in the Christmas spirit.

  21. Big Peat of Islay.

    Of course.

At my age and having attended so many team building and group meetings I have a ton of them.

However it fits with those standing on the sidelines sniping at the efforts of the Res12 team.

Carolina hold on to squeak a 23-20 win over New Orleans and allow me to go to bed.

God bless all CQNers including the whingers, the negative and the bomb throwers.

  22. NIMMO’s ” reasoning” ?

Perhaps it’s just me but I found part of Nimmo’s ” Ruling to be more than strange ?

I’ll put this in some of my own words , as I can’t copy and paste on this device.

Nimmo stated when only fining ” them”, ” no other sanctions ( title stripping etc ? ) were appropriate ,as the schemes employed by ” them” were also open and could have been used by other clubs” ?

I find that view/reasoning to be not only disgraceful, but PATENTLY PERVERSE !

So therefore to take that view/reasoning ( especially in the determination and Ruling) of an official inquiry, that would then leave the door open for any Judge/Court/Sheriff/Lord to share and apply the very same view/reasoning to all cases ?

If I was in the dock for robbing a bank, could my defence counsel now argue on my behalf that ” whilst it is proven that my client did indeed rob this bank, and that is not in dispute , the Court should not hand down a custodial sentence ( perhaps only a fine will suffice ?), as the OPTION to rib this particular bank, or indeed any other bank, is OPEN TO ALL, and OTHER PERSONS could have taken the same course ” ?????????

That is basically what Nimmo stated, so far I haven’t read anyone picking up on Nimmo’s ” Warped and Patently Perverse” views and determination ?

Apologises if this has already been highlighted and debated in the past ?

    HH

  23. When oldco and now Sevco fans sing their blood songs , the words ” Fenian bar stewards” can be heard in at least two of their community songs.

According to reports this morning Sporting Gijon have been punished by UEFA and part of their stadium closed for a period for , ” RACIST chants” by their fans.

Why has their midden ipox never been closed for the very same reason by UEFA ?

Whilst the term/ word/description ” FENIAN ” may not be viewed as racist on its own ( the bold Fenian Men for example ?), however when applied in a different context = their blood songs, surely it should be viewed as ” racist ” ?

They have the banned song ” Hello etc,” etc, and that song is banned because the content of the song does include the word/description ” Fenian” and up to our knees etc” .

IMO there is a clear contradiction here, as if you ban that ” song”, then it surely is for the reason that it is deemed to be ” racist” , or why else would you ban it ?

IMO their crumbling ipox should have been closed years ago ?
