Race-ism, Rogic logic, governance

When Roy Race’s scriptwriters sat down to decide on their weekly football fantasies they would never bring themselves to write what Jack Aitchison went through yesterday.

A scoring debut.
With his first touch.
As the youngest player ever to play for the club.

This is classic (Roy) Race-ism.  To get to the stage of making your Celtic debut as a 16-year-old striker Jack would have to have eclipsed many older players in the youth structure, so he clearly has something about him, but consider anything he achieves in the next five years as a bonus.

With Kieran Tierney (18) and Ryan Christie (21) also scoring their first goals for the club yesterday, there was an air of optimism that some of the development work we’ve invested in recently is bearing fruit. The most important lesson from yesterday in this respect was Tom Rogic (23).

Tom has been at Celtic for over 3 years, which indicated the time it takes to develop a player. He came through long-term injury during that period but he could easily have dropped off the scene a year ago without much fuss. He now looks every inch the modern creative midfield player. What he did to create the chance for Ryan Christie’s goal yesterday was sublime. If you didn’t see it, go look for it.

It takes time and patience to develop players, but the evidence is mounting that we’re good at it again.

Really pleased the sun shone on Ronny’s last day, in every sense of the word. It was a high to go out on after a lot of rainy days, in every sense of the word. I planned to appraise him, and our strategy, after the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat but decided to leave it to the end of the season after his quick announcement that he was leaving. Will pick up with this in due course.

As I walked away from Celtic Park yesterday and pondered the success or otherwise of Ronny Deila’s reign, the thought occurred to me, maybe it’s too early to tell?

Remarkably, over the weekend, more than 500 of you have contributed to a crowdsource project to publicise issues relating to Resolution 12 in The Guardian newspaper, and a business paper serving Uefa’s territory in Switzerland (all without a mention in the main blog).

We are not served particularly well in Scotland with oversight, accountability and governance. It’s important for our society, not just our game, that those who can articulate this situation do so. Read this article for more information, with a link at the bottom to participate.

I keep reading repeated references that David Moyes doesn’t ‘do youth’.

Here’s a couple of playes Moyes has brought through:

    Victor Anichebe

    James Vaughan

    Jack Rodwell

    Leon Osman

    Ross Barkley

    Wayne Rooney

    Adnan Januzaj

    Seamus Coleman

    John Stones

    Marouane Fellaini

Not a bad role call. All bar Coleman, Stones and Fellaini were youth academy players with Everton or Man Utd, and given their debut by Moyes. These 3 players were signed by him aged under 20 or younger at the time.

Essentially, that’s one EPL-standard player every season since he took the Everton job that Moyes has developed.

But he doesn’t ‘do youth’, eh.

I don’t think anyone said he ‘doesn’t do’ youth. I said I don’t think he wouldn’t be best suited compared to Rodgers.

He spent £15m on Fellaini btw.

  10. Every manager favoured comes with a caveat.

Roy Keane; long list of madness and mathem.

    Rodgers; Ballotelli £80 mill.

    Moyes; Fellaini £30 mill

    Neil: Naysmith £8 mill

I’d still like to see the King of Kings get a crack with a known sidekick to back him up. If we’re talking talented youngsters then surely he’d bring over young Jordan too? Striker problem solved in the most successive way.

  11. What a week of football! Best of all Celtic but also: Barca champs, Bayern champs, Newcastle relegated and M.U. miss out on Champs League – love it.

  12. Sandman – I’m completely perplexed why anybody suggests Larsson for the manager’s job.

Can you explain your thoughts on him for the job?

JB: “Sure. So long as I’m back in time on Monday to sign that contract with Burnley”.

    L5: “Of course”.

Cost to keep delusional huns delusional for a couple of days £2 – 3k. Money well spent.

  14. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

If I was trying to negotiate a better deal with my current club I don’t think I’d use a club with no money to play them against. Unless of course they didn’t know they had no money…

  15. Moyes would make us defensively sound, much required for Europe and obviously has an eye (or his scout has) for a player. Downside is style of play, defensive, safety first like Strachan and Lennon teams at their worse (last season with each of them). Of the three favourites he’d be my number two behind Rodgers but ahead of Keane

  16. Weeminger

My objection to full summer football is that it moves us out of alignment with the main European leagues.

Realistically we will always be bringing in other nationalities and we would end up fielding a weakened side every other June, and knowing the SFA we would have games scheduled against our closest challengers in that period.

The reduction from 38 to 32 games would mean our players are fresher and fitter and in better shape for mid week CL games, especially in the latter stages when we will be pushing to overcome quarter and semi final opponents. :-))

Sandman – I’m completely perplexed why anybody suggests Larsson for the manager’s job.

Can you explain your thoughts on him for the job?

    =============================================

    Why be perplexed?

He’s more qualified for the Celtic job than either Deila or Neil Lennon were before they got the gig.

He’s been learning the hard way – low budget jobs in the Swedish league.

He know Celtic inside out. He is a legend. He commands RESPECT from players. Something sorely missing in the past 24 months.

He’s the greatest player I’ve seen in a Celtic jersey and, I expect, will always remain so. He cannot tarnish that legendary playing career by management failure – I have no fear of seeing him fail, nor do I expect him too. Fear will only stop us appointing him and gamble on the currently mooted trio, which leads me to…

I see no risk in appointing Henrik over Moyes, Rodgers or Keane – all of those three have failed in their most recent managerial jobs. Failed badly, may I point out, and pretty expensively.

I find the ‘track record’ arguments against Henrik laughable – those of you bound to such reasoning would never have signed Henrik the player either!

We are at square one anyway. No recognised potent first eleven. Tactics and players that failed in every crunch game. Demotivated, anxious, lacking self-belief and the pride that comes with the jersey. CL qualifiers looming; THE most important period in any season now.

We need heroes again. Bring in the ultimate Celtic hero to take the reins.

  18. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

If Moyes was still at Everton, Barkley would probably still be sitting on the bench watching the ball sailing through the air to Fellaini.

  19. Not sure how much the betting simply reflects cash bets, and how much on information. Moyes out to 10/1 last week, currently 6/4 favourite. Huge swings in the betting suggests the process is certainly still on going.

No solid inside info but Owen Coyle won’t be at 40/1 for long from what I have heard.

Rodgers possibly my pick but my fear would be a Tommy Burns style era of beautiful, unrewarded football.

Lambert and Larsson with Ibrahimovic as their first signing, that’s the best rumour I’ve made up.

  20. Stuart Armstrong and Craig Gordon at the old golf challenge today with Bertie Auld, Tam Boyd and Gary Player. Won by…Erm Gary Player.

  28. Roy Keane would not be my choice but the man who matters is DD, who surely wants Keane. I suspect that Moyes and Rodgers want a job in England where they’ll have cash to splash. But how soon could we install Keane? Whoever it is we can probably expect failure in the CL qualifiers – that is par for the course for a Celtic manager in his first season.
