Radical change needed to UK football

756

It’s kicking off in all directions today but keep an eye on the English Football Association proposals to introduce a series of changes to lower league football.  One option on the table is for Premier and Championship sides’ “B teams” to compete in a new structure with League Two and Conference teams.

The FA are eyeing an opportunity to allow the best young English talent, often cosseted in the youth squads of top Premier League teams with little chance of first team action, to be exposed to competitive games.  The proposal includes a geographical split of northern and southern teams.

While the FA Premier League is bust by any known measure, the Football League is in an even worse financial state.  Average income in the lower leagues is remarkably high but the steep pyramid-model, which has clubs chasing huge increases in revenue in the Premier League, leads to excessive over-spend.

With these proposed changes on the table the Scottish FA could do worse than discuss their own game’s future with their English counterparts.  Well run Scottish clubs are hamstrung by their better-funded neighbours cherry-picking their best players for a relative pittance.  Scottish Premiership clubs regularly cannot compete financially for players in England’s fourth tier.

It’s surely time to federate the top Scottish league with the English league structure.

Information slipping out of Switzerland this morning that Manchester City and Paris St Germain are each facing a fine of circa £50m for breaching Financial Fair Play rules is encouraging – if Uefa are able to deliver on the deal.

When you consider financially punishing an entity which owns the oil wealth of a sovereign nation the figure needs to be a big one.  £50m just about hits the mark.

Apparently the Great Sevco Shakedown began this morning when the club’s first every goal scorer, Andy Little, was released.  The news is harsh on the player but the club needs to learn the lesson – income needs to match expenditure.

Imran Ahmed’s court hearing today against Rangers International comes exactly three years after liquidation expert, Craig Whyte, was triumphantly welcomed into Ibrox, an ominous anniversary, for some.

Rangers prepared to offer 43 million shares to current institutional investors, in the event of an insolvency looking likely due to poor season ticket sales / Diamond Dave King.

There are currently 65 million shares in issue.

If they do this, the price is yet to be decided, but at today’s value they will probably raise £10 million. It’s more likely they will discount these to a level where previously stung institutional investors from the previous IPO will feel comfortable buying.

In essence it’s checkmate for Dave King.

The board have shown that they are willing to hand over a higher than 50% controlling share in Rangers to Institutional investors rather than hand Dave King anything. They are willing to dilute their own holding / invest more also rather than hand Dave King anything.

I have no idea what this means but I’d guess is that they think they can withstand a one year season ticket bhoycott (weh hey!) with the new equity release, win the Championship, and the fans will flock back at inflated season ticket prices in the SPFL in 15 months time.

    Seems almost viable. Unfortunately.

What having London Hedge funds in control does for your club I have no idea.

Of course the Rangers board could be making it up and the investors aren’t interested at all – in fact wanting to recoup some of their investments by selling Ibrox etc in the inevitable insolvency that would follow without their support.

Had an absolute cracking night in the old Three Judges last night, i talked some amount of nonsense but had a ball. Ayrshire Tim, you’re a lovely man and one of life’s true gentlemen. Jimbo67, I didn’t manage to get much of a chance to talk to you but D did and said exactly the same thing about you.

As for you Sir, well you’re even better in real life and I count my blessings that I’m able to call you my friend. If last night was a wee taster for the Hootenanny on Saturday, we are in for a brilliant day. Right aff oot to coin a phrase for a much needed curer!

  10. Coolmore Mafia @11:58,

Thanks for the update, interesting post.

Think I read they were looking to get 8M from the share issue, if that’s the case it’s 20% discount.

Depending on how well Mr Wallace manages to reduce the overheads/operation costs, we could see them running at 2M per month, 24M per annum.

There is still a big shortfall, but if the Sevco Board convince the bears that Dave King has no workable plan and they buy their SBs and the share issue is successfull – some record match day turn outs and a good Ramsden Cup run and they could be there or there abouts to breaking even.

  13. Re attendances

    In the season that they played their last ever game in the SPL, the average attendances for the home games of the top 6 attended clubs were;

    Celtic 50,904

    Rangers 46324

    Hearts 13381

    Hibs 9909

    Aberdeen 9296

    Dundee United 7481

    This present season the averages comparison for those same teams (minus the dead team obviously) are;

    Celtic – down 4121

    Hearts – up 745

    Hibs – up 906

    Aberdeen – up 2926

    Dundee Utd – up 118

Of course the overall attendance figures will be down in SPL due to the death of what was the 2nd biggest club, but, the numbers suggest that outwith Celtic, fans of other teams have embraced the better competition.

Is the 8% decline at CP down to the vanishing of the only competition, or other factors? We can only offer opinion on that. (or find the missing 4121 fans and ask them)

  15. At least im honest enough to say on here what I think of neil lennon,as a coach I don’t rate , as a man I have no problems at all , and another thing a lot on here praise neil for him being irish ,sticking 2 fingers up at the establishment in this country.you people that support him ,have done more damage to him, that he feels he is obliged to say something,to keep all you bhoys happy.no wonder the man suffers from depression.

  16. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

If Neil was to leave in the next few years he should be brought back for the ten in a row season and with THG as part of his backroom staff however I would much prefer seeing Neil do the full ten.

  17. you celtic fans make us english laugh…hate the english..sing songs glorifying bombings..raise money for said bombs to be made..then fans of celtic (n.irish division)plant bombs in pubs on buses in shopping centers (manchester(celtic fans did more damage and killed 2 children with 1 car bomb than 200000 rangers fans)..and this is one of the many reasons we english will never have you provo lovers down here…got it..good…now back to stagnating..withering and dying…its funny to read and hear celtic fans drone on about how they should be n the premiership…funny but annoying…you should give up football and stick to the scottish national sport….TOSSING….
