Ralston and Johnston leaves development gap

119

We spoke about the prospect of two 27-year-old left backs next season: Kieran Tierney and Greg Taylor.  Both excellent players but without development potential.  Our right back options are similar; Alistair Johnston and Tony Ralston are both 26.

Alistair has been a revelation since he arrived in January 2023, replacing Josip Juranovic, who had just played in a World Cup semifinal.  The Canada international will hopefully stay through the peak of his career, which would leave limited opportunity for Ralston, during his own peak period.

Tony came in from the cold and featured heavily during  Ange Postecoglou’s first term in Scotland.  The player has established himself in the Scotland squad but will forever play a bit part at Celtic.

Tony needs to move on; he should play regularly during his prime years.  Celtic cannot abandon player development.  Backup roles should be for young players with potential to grow into great assets.  Player development should again be a crucial part of out strategic plan.

“Walter’s legacy is more of a danger to me than any football revolution and outsider manager”

Don’t worry bout it B78. Genuinely.

Wattanacio was a pathway to ‘quite effective’.

Which was simultaneously its Pro and its Con

Once in a while it could bore it’s way to success at domestic level but only reach ‘almost successful’ further up.

    It has had it’s day.

Aggression based on assumed Protestant supremacy hasn’t been totally eliminated …

… they still get away with some stuff …

… but it has been mitigated significantly both by VAR and the general trend towards sanitising team sports.

PS – Barry is one of those poor souls who lives in the past and doesn’t recognise the above reality.

As a rule, I never listen to the guy. He’s beyond dumb.

But I did come across him being snap interviewed either pre or post game (can’t recall) and was so taken by his utterances I rewound and played again.

    It was remarkable.

One first watch … it was abundantly clear he was parroting Walter Smith’s words but there was something else I couldn’t quite get – hence the rewind and playback.

On second viewing I watched his mouth movements and listened to his intonation .. and it came to me !!!

He actually SOUNDED like Walter Smith.

If you closed your eyes and had the reel played to you – you could be mistaken for thinking it was Walter speaking.

Barry – you’ve taken the hero worship too far.

Rodgers said: “I am so pleased that we have been able to bring Paul to the club in this important new role and I am really looking forward to working with him.

“He is a hugely talented man who I know will make a real positive difference to us and give us a new edge.

“Paul knows modern football inside out, he understands what we need as a club, what our team needs to operate at a high level, and how we can develop positively and successfully across a number of functions within the club.

“I have known Paul for some time and have been well aware of his work. I know he will be a huge asset to Celtic and that his knowledge, talent and tremendous work ethic will be crucial to us as we drive forward across a number of areas.”

Tisdale, speaking to the club website, continued: “It is a huge honour to accept this new role at Celtic and join a club of such pedigree and stature.

“I can’t wait to join the team, to begin my work and deliver positive results. Celtic demands and deserves excellence across all areas and I know that that is something the Board and Brendan seek at all times.

‘In my role I will be doing all I can to further develop our work across talent identification, development and analytics, always with the aim of ensuring high-level support of football performance.’
