Rangers and Newco both look marooned without clarification

872

So what do we know?

Need for clarification

Rangers’ potential new owner has asked for clarification on what he is buying, a franchise with a place in the SPL or the middle of a doughnut, with the ability to apply for membership to the Scottish Football League.

That clarification has not been delivered, which must undermine Rangers sale.

Rangers want an extension

Despite needing clarification, Rangers administrators, Duff and Phelps, failed to attend the meeting and asked for a further extension (it’s like the 2007-08 league season all over again).  Curious, to say the least. Clearly they were not in a position to offer the SPL information that would assist their case.

To be revealed before 30 May

The next meeting is on 30 May, by then the First Tier Tribunal on Rangers Employee Benefit Trust will have reported.  There will also be a considerable amount of information in the public domain on how Rangers operated under Sir David Murray.  With all this information available, it will be impossible for the SPL to further delay publishing the findings of their inquiry into Improper Registration of Players by Rangers.  In disciplinary terms, this is the big one.

What about Craig Whyte?

Bill Miller was appointed preferred bidder on Thursday but, as floating charge holder, Craig Whyte can ask the court to block stop Duff and Phelps disposing of Ibrox.  We don’t know Craig Whyte’s mind, or if he has a deal with Miller, but if they are not working in partnership, you can expect a late and effective legal block put in place to stop the disposal of Ibrox.

So what does it mean?

The chance of a Newco being in place, in the SPL or SFL, for the start of next season has never been more remote.  On 7 May they don’t have a buyer, after 10 weeks they don’t have the stadium and the moral outrage over what looked likely to be voted through today is beginning to gain traction.

Today was the best chance Rangers had to cut a quick deal with the SPL.  Further delay only means more time for the other clubs to work on contingency plans and to be lobbied by their own supporters.

We are six days away from the end of the season and Duff and Phelps have to put enough of a confirmed deal in place to convince someone to part with £11.2m.  They don’t have passage into the league and they don’t have a stadium to sell.

If Bill Miller stays in the game until the end of the week and submits a formal offer for the stadium and other assets, we can expect Craig Whyte to go to court to halt the process.  I cannot see how or why Miller, who doesn’t even have a passport and has made no moved to come over and negotiate in person, would put £11.2m on the table when he doesn’t know what he is buying, or what sporting and financial penalties are coming his way.

Rangers will have to overcome all these obstacles long before 30 May if they are to stay in the game long enough for Newco to inherit their place in the SPL but their chances of surviving that long is dependent on a positive outcome from the meeting that has now been postponed.

They look marooned; I don’t think they are going to make it.

  3. seems to me that Duff and Duffer ran the meeting, they called the shots and want to have the Miller deal done, in whatever shape by next Monday and then call an EGM, can they do it?

    I hope not.

  4. I’m away until things calm down around here.

    Seems we are in for a lot of people talking a lot more guff to cover their embarrassment at the guff they wrote on the last thread.

    Secretly I think some of hem just like to be outraged. Whisper it, but I think some of them want rangers back next season so they can be even more outraged………

    One question for them – what could Celtic say in public (as a club) that would help their case right now? A public statement from Celtic prior to any official decision on Newco would be a waste of time. in fact it would be worse than that. It would be the tipping point for some other SPL club chairmen to get in behind Newco and dismiss this as just ‘Old Firm’ (sic) emnity.

    Is it possible that Celtic FC have some ‘assurances’ of their own? Perhaps some from Nyon? I am speculating. But no more so than those who think the club should be shouting from the rooftops.

    Could there have been a conference call between the SPL Chairmen & Bill Miller today?

  7. 'crushed nuts?' 'Naw, Layringitis!' on

    How can oldco have a vote on newco? Conflict of interest. Simmit & Drawers are dragging out this process for a reason. how can Bill Miller get assurances about future action/sanctions against somrthing he doesn’t yet own? especially since the regulator has postponed the next postponement ’til May 30?

  10. what’s the thinking about how teams will vote (i know it’s the board who vote but they did say they’d consult all clubs.

    i think rangers (if they get a vote), killie, motherwell, ICT and probably saint johnstone will vote for.

    i think celtic, dunfermline, aberdeen and possibly dundee united will vote against.

    that would leave hearts, hibs and saint mirren. both the edinburgh clubs have relatively big crowds so rangers visits would have less impact overall, although i think hibs will vote them in when push comes to shove. mad vlad? strangely quiet on the subject, but he’s trying to flog his shares and i guess rangers being there will make them slightly more valuable. that said, one suspects he’d love to shaft rangers. then there’s saint mirren. will they be aggreived at the perception they were gary withey’s plaything and get some revenge?

    i don’t even think the vote is as clear cut as some folk think.

  11. Gordon_J, sixtaeseven, not definite but very likely.

    obonfanti1888, I expect it will.

    RobertTressell, I also thought this delay was good news. There was zero expectation from me they would be booted out today.

    ABZMike, we don’t know anything for sure but we do know those wanting to put a deal together don’t have a stadium or confirmation of a league place. This is good, unless I am misreading the mood of the blog.

    archdeaconsbench, certain is not the word I would use but I expect it by then.

    Bhodran Man, indeed.

    CirenBhoy, he needs the stadium and then needs to take a chance on the SPL outcome. Lots more dirty washing to come out soon – which he should know by now. The chance for clarification today has been missed.

    patbhoy, you’re welcome.

  13. some points to make.

    1. Ernie. Your points are mute IMHO. Your were given the opportunity to speak with those in power at Celtic and you refused. So close your MSM or PR laptop and give us peace.

    2. Have Dunfermline & Hibs both been given a guarantee that the Board will not ask whomever is required to transfer their share to Ross County until after the vote on the 30th or have both decided to bequest their vote onto Ross County therefore staving off a backlash from the vicious Huns who will threaten and more than likely harm those who control their club violently.

    3. Why have Celtic been party to this adjournment? Is it because, as Paul67 states (his opinion) that he Huns will now be dead and a gonner or is it because the clubs can now determine how many fans have not renewed season books by their respective deadlines (not really deadlines anyway)?

    MWD still watching closely.

    Gordybhoy –

    laterooms just now, all good choices, hitting the price mark –

    word of caution for edinburgh, if you can, leave the car at home, or park & ride from outside the city.

    * Apex Waterloo Place Hotel .

    – 2 mins from Waverly

    – close to Broughton street and great restraunts.

    * Hotel Du Vin,

    – great rooms, very plush, close to Greyfriars, a wee five minutes to get into town.

    * Malmaison

    – this is out at Leith harbour, but its an excellent hotel. again great rooms, and you can park the car up here.

    Service apartments –

    * Princes Street Apartments

    – actross from APEX, very comfortable, and space.

    * Fraser Suites-

    – round the corner from Saint Giles, excellent tourist location, couple of minutes to grassmarket. these are good value, and good layouts, depending on room great views.

    I would stay in any of these.

    ———–

    I saw someone talked up Ricks and Hudsons other day, allthough great bars attached to them, the rooms were tiny-ish. good location though.

    so either book today or postpone until a few days before.

    either way your faster than SPL board.

  15. Paul67

    surely the only way you could be sure that the FTT will have reported by 30th May is if you have heard the verdict has already been fed back to RFC(IA)? – this could also explain D&P not wanting to be present at the meeting today

    There is something strange going on here …… I think the SFA / SPL have realised (or been tipped a wink) that RIA are finished / sunk / beyond redemption and, like the rest of us, are now just waiting for the bubble to bust……. And that there will be no Newco coming in with any of the RIA assets……

    The 4 horses have just stopped at a trough for a wee drink …….

  21. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!..Truth and Justice will always prevail on

    Sorry, meant to say also ……… Celtic Board will have a lot more inside information / knowledge of all this, and continue to monitor / play this exactly right…

  22. Maybe our board are working on a revenue sharing deal regarding tv rights etc. that does not include the Huns, but the rest of the league will be receptive to. It is a possibility is it not. And if this is indeed the case then a delay such as today would only work against “Them” and favour CFC’s position.

    Just a thought

    All a statement from Celtic does is allow the guns to be trained on them.

    Compare and contrast the media frothing over Dougiegate – “How can we punish Celtic” (Kenny MacIntyre) one of the choice quotes of that period – with the way in which McCoist and Jardine, for example, are given free rein to vent their clumsy, unfocused fury over the airwaves without so much as a peep of condemnation in the nation’s press, and you get an idea as to the reaction awaiting Celtic the minute they comment publicly on the Newco issue.

    The sporting public’s attention right now is, rightly, on Rangers and their numerous misdemeanours. By keeping them in the spotlight, you force them to reveal their hand, as they have been doing and continue to do, weakening their position in the process.

    Which is nice.
