Rangers improper player registration evidence mounts

1152

More evidence emerged today on how Rangers recompensed players through their Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) scheme in The Sun newspaper, who have a draft contract Rangers offered an unnamed player.  The contract was a letter confirming a six figure payment as well as a £1200 per game appearance bonus.

An accountant told Sun reporters Paul Thornton and Ewing Grahame:

“I have been shown a contract of employment showing how much money players were going to get but also a back letter which I presume that individual has assumed is part of his salary. It seems like a contract.

“If the two documents are handed to someone together, is that seen as being his overall package? If the answer to that is yes then there is a problem because the money that goes into the trust really should be getting taxed because it is his salary.

“The fact it is there as a back letter at all suggests it is dodgy.”

Attention is obviously drawn to the potential criminal consequences of these tax arrangements but football fans throughout the country will be alarmed that Campbell Ogilvie, the man who was general secretary and director of Rangers when the EBT scheme started, is currently president of the SFA and would have been involved in scoping out the secret remit of the SFA inquiry into Rangers, which was asked to report within an incredibly quick two week period.  Ogilvie is also one of the few men the inquiry will report to.

If the allegations in today’s Sun are accurate, Rangers have improperly registered football players for a period of around a decade.  The penalty for playing an improperly registered footballer in any game is a 3-0 forfeit.

When the SFA president is in a position to confirm all of this, the association have all information they require to make a ruling on this, but despite these allegations being widely reported for many months, they have yet to even acknowledge there is anything to investigate.

Can you imagine the scrutiny the Football Association in England’s board and chief executive would be exposed to if this scandal was not being actioned?

‘I do not believe Catholic hyms have any place at CP circa 2012. We are an inclusive club albit it with strong links to Ireland and Catholicism but we now live in a secular multi-ethnic society, which happily is reflected in the make up of our support.’

Does the inclusivity extend to Catholics?

I was looking at the goal difference last night and thought to myself, “we’ve scored ten more than them – they won’t make that up in their two games in hand.” Not to sure now – are they playing Motherwell next?

So this season we WILL see the huns bottom of the SPL with a -ve 10 point haul and goal difference

Would you agree with me that as a lot of our fans are not Republican, or of Irish descent, or do not really care about Irish politics, we shouldn’t sing rebel songs at Celtic matches?

    ————–

Yes i do, no issue with that statement. I do however have issues with comparisons that were drawn between the bile the Hun support sing and our support singing TBOTOB as a reason for not singing Irish Nationalist songs.

  7. Really atrocious from ICT that a team with McCulloch and a complete unknown upfront score 4 against them. Butcher one of the managers in Scotland who needs to take a good long look in the mirror. McCall the other.

    I don’t think so!

Fare thee well my lovely Dinah,

    A thousand times adieu

For we’re going away from the Holy Ground,

And the girls we all love true

We will sail the salt seas over,

    And then return for shore

To see again the girls we love,

And the holy Ground once more

    FINE GIRL YOU ARE

You’re the girl that I adore,

But still I live in hope to see

    The holy Ground once more

    .

And now the storm is raging,

And we are far from shore

And the good old ship is tossing about,

And the rigging is all tore

And the secret ofmy life, my love,

You’re the girl that I adore

But still I live in hope to see,

    Holy Ground once more

    FINE GIRL YOU ARE

You’re the girl that I adore,

But still I live in hope to see

    The holy Ground once more

    .

And now the storm is over,

And we are safe and well

We will go down to a public house,

And sit and drink like hell

We will drink strong ale and porter,

And we’ll make the rafters roar

And when our money is all spent,

We will go to sea once more

    FINE GIRL YOU ARE

You’re the girl that I adore,

But still I live in hope to see

The holy Ground once more, FINE GIRL YOU ARE

I thought every Celtic fan knew that song…

I think this too, If the SFA are seen to be in cahoots in all this (which is looking as if they are in every passing day) I think it has the potential to have our teams banned from europe. Maybe Celtic should pre-empt this with UEFA ?

UEFA should investigate the SFA who should investigate RFC.

  11. Regarding this SFA investigation – surely if they are found to have cheated through improperly registered players, Celtic would deman damages from the SFA or RFC. That would make the big tax case look like chicken feed and surely guarantee that the club would have to be liquidated.

Wise up! Don’t want to become embroiled in a song deabate. I just mentioned that RC songs have no place in CP just as someone else argued that Republican songs have no place. Both statements are right.

Can’t see the harm in singing hymns myself though.

  15. Yesterday was an accomplished but not great performance.

The difference in motherwells commitment against one Glasgow team compared to the others is telling.

Think its a combination of knowing which team the ref will apply leniency to your robust approach and the players themselves with the Scottish mindset of helping their brothers to triumph.

While I thought Ki had some good moments yesterday I still think he reduces the potency of our team.

His first instinct of slowing the game down and his preference for a sideways and backwards pass allows opponents to set and defend in numbers and we seem to create less clear cut chances.

I think Wilson is improving and the partnership with Rogne is promising.

Our coaching was below recent standards yesterday and the substitions poor.We played a little deep and too cautious after the goal.

  16. I think we should recognise that Butcher probably reckons he has a damned good chance of being the next RFC manager. He won’t do anything to upset that.

  17. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

I certainly hope that we come to a deal with UEFA that we will drop all justifiable legal proceedings if they smooth over a move to another league it could be in their interest also.

Can you explain what you mean by ‘inclusive’.

You claim we are an inclusive club but you want to exclude aspects that are an essential part of the club’s heritage.

Being inclusive means allowing each part of the support to express itself as it sees fit.

  21. There is no need for religious hymns or rebel songs to be sung at CP.

Celtic fans are well known for their extensive repertoire of singing about football,

players etc and should no longer involve themselves in singing inappropriate songs.

In these days where we have such a diverse, multicultural support, let’s show that we

are supporting our team, not a specific faith or political element.

  22. sparkleghirl @ 14:36,

Great link – there’s a lot in that story.

It seems that Whyte used the stockbrokers that he was a Director of to sell the hun shares in Arsenal, and that the money never quite found its way back to a Rangers’ bank account. And also that several large payments were made to companies associated with friends of his – for legitimate purposes, I’m sure (allegedly).

Love the small print at the end of the article:

“Nick Harris is also the chief sports news correspondent at the Mail on Sunday and material from this story was used across several pieces in today’s Scottish Mail on Sunday. Not all the Scottish MoS’s content is online but an old-fashioned thing known as a ‘newspaper’ containing all those stories and much more can be purchased in a shop.”

Are you being polemic deliberately? It’s ok to sing Catholic hymns and not Reb songs why because you go to Mass each week or that a section of our support are staunch RC or because we simply used to sing them in the past?

Excuse me getting involved but that doesn’t stand up if it damages the club. By that token, we would have to accept that it’s quite possible to be a Celtic fan and anti-Catholic (indeed many of my Celtic-supporting friends are just that – ex-Catholics with a disdain or even hatred of the club). Perhaps they should be allowed to express that as well as any fascist elements within the support?

Also, I think the Green Brigade have shown that expressing themselves as they see fit can cause trouble for the club. My point is that you have to allow all expressions by your logic, not just the ones that might seem traditional.

But we have a collective. We all support the same cause and we all do it in our own unique way. Celebrate the triumphs and be good to each other :)
