Ranters regret, BDO and SPL £250k fine

201

Last week we shone a light on why newco may have withdrawn their ill-conceived rant against Dundee United over the SFA’s award of £204k to newco as Training Compensation for Charlie Telfer signed out of contract.

Where Training Compensation is disputed, the SFA are obliged to award the losing club the entire amount of money due according to the set scale, from when the player was still at school.  The club which receives the money is then obliged to pay any earlier clubs the according to period they developed the player.

This is where Rangers’ liquidators, BDO, come in.  Rangers membership of the SFA expired in August 2012, just a few weeks after newco began life with a cup-tie against Brechin City, but Rangers were the club who developed Telfer between 2006 and 2012, so they are entitled to make a claim on the money newco will collect on their behalf.

It’s unlikely Dundee United have already paid newco, so if newco dispute they owe oldco Rangers this money, BDO are likely to ask a court to freeze the transaction before it is fulfilled.  United would be unable to discharge their debt by paying newo until the court made a ruling in their favour.

United chairman, Steven Thompson, may or may not have said “You’re only two years old” when offering a lesser figure for Telfer, but whoever penned the withdrawn statement for newco, they missed the point.  Someone should have advised newco, “You’re only two years old, take the money on offer and don’t push for an explicit Training Compensation figure.”

Cognitive Dissonance alert, we now face the possibility of newco paying a football debt to oldco.

In the same article last week, we brought up the subject of Rangers’ as-yet unpaid £250k fine for the illegally avoiding tax and breaking player registration rules.  The fine, levied by an SPL inquiry, is almost two years old now.  As part of their SFA membership application, newco agreed to meet all football debts, but there was previously insufficient motivation from the SPFL, who assumed SPL assets and liabilities, to enforce the fine on newco.

I hear that attitudes changed the instant newco attempted to rub people’s noses in the dirty stuff with that rant on the Telfer decision.

  1. Joe Filippis Haircut (12:43), the question is… would Anya be any worse?! Get rid of those failed projects and try afresh. Anya has looked pretty decent on the few occasions I have seen him play (mainly for Scotland).

On a separate note, here’s a bit of lazy journalism from the Glasgow Evening Times:

“ON-LOAN Celtic striker John Guidetti has insisted that the Parkhead side can WIN the Europa League.

The Hoops have been paired against Italian giants AC Milan, with the first leg taking place on February 19 in Glasgow, before the return tie a week later in the San Siro.”

And Paul, at first glance I read the title as “Ratners regret…”. Mind you, Rangers, Ranters, Ratners, they’re all much of a muchness… fleecing the gullible of their cash for a third rate product.

No problem,my epicurean pal. I’m pretty sure he’ll be back there soon enough. He’s fairly running up the airmiles these days, poor sod.

Tell you what,if next year is like the last few, where my sister and niece barely see him,I’ll let you know where he is and if possible you can recommend a fine place to visit.

Might cheer him up,he hates being away from home. (My sister should nag him more often, his trips abroad would be like a blessed relief then. But no,she only nags her Dad and brother, haha!)

  4. Doing my daily catch up on the fabulously exciting world of accountancy – I spotted this from Accountingweb:

The former administrators of Rangers Football club have agreed to stop insolvency work during a police investigation into their alleged fraudulent activity.

In a statement the Insolvency Practitioners Association (IPA) said David Whitehouse and Paul Clark have “accepted formal undertakings that they will not take any new appointments with immediate effect, and they have voluntarily transferred all current appointments to other practitioners.”

The body said it has a duty to act in the public interest and ensure that those of its members who are authorised to take insolvency appointments are “fit and proper”.

“These are interim steps and not a sanction on their conduct as no decision has been taken in relation to their fitness and propriety,” the IPA said. “The measures are however necessary in the public interest, to protect the reputation of the insolvency profession and the association whilst the Scottish police carry out their investigations into the serious charges which have been brought.”

Whitehouse and Clark, of insolvency firm Duff & Phelps, appeared in court in November, charged with fraudulent activity after a probe into the sale of Rangers Football Club in 2011.

I’ll try to find something on it…..if the SFA took unilateral action without the majority of Club’s agreement, then that in itself is a breach of their remit…

I did wonder what prompted the SPFL to finally try and impose the only sanction placed on RFC for 10 years plus of ebt use (excluding of course the illegal ebts used in 1999, 2000 to 2003 that, like the war, gets no mention in German company, gets no mention by SPFL or SFA. The same ebts of which HMRC declared in this extract in bold

    http://kerrydalestreet.co.uk/single/?p=13318010&t=9208558

    were ” fraudulent”

The SPFL know by now that their Commission investigating ebts was misled and that they were lied to in 2012. They have been lied to by RIFC since, who have no intention of doing anything honourable.

The BIG issue here is not the money, the big issue is how can Scottish football continue to allow a club who have consistently lied to the rest of the game to be part of that game?

There is no possibility of restoring trust in Scottish football as long as RIFC are being pandered to or being seen to be pandered to.

It is high time RFC/ RIFC were called out.

The evidence so far on wtc ebts, BTC ebts and UEFA 2011 licence is that they operate through deception, but like a battered wife refusing to call a halt to her abuse, Scottish football still allows that abuse to continue.

I doubt there is a plan as such for a Third Rangers but don’t discount it could happen by circumstance. However whether it’s Third Rangers or Ashley Rangers they must be made to act honestly by the rest of Scottish football rejecting them until they provide signs that they will.

With more clubs in improved financial circumstances there is not a better time to force the issue. Tell RIFC or Third Rangers “If you want to play in Scottish football, play by the same rules other clubs do or sod off”

Do we belileve that the likes of Partick Thistle, Motherwell, Ross County or St Mirren will beat Rangers in the SPL/Championship play-off at the end of the season? We already know the outcome if Kilmarnock are involved.

And even if the SPL 2nd bottom club do prevail, there is still the prospect of an emergency league re-structure!

  12. 67Heaven:

It really is quite simple, all Celtic have to do is tell us all, on their official site, that they did not endorse the five-way-agreement…………………… or anything remotely like it.

    Simples.

Then we can all sleep better at night knowing our club did not sign us all up, by proxy, to a ‘cheats charter’.

  17. auldheid

Tell all the other clubs in the SPFL and the SFL and there supporters to tell that lot to get there house in order, because as usual it’s only one club doing the watch here us, Celtic, unless the rest get on board things will never change, so don’t blame us or the celtic board, we are a big club, but only one voice in Scotland.
