Rascal racism

710

Football’s impudent scamps have long caused more annoyance than actual harm to their clubs.  Many live by a different moral code to the rest of us which leads to all sorts of excesses, including the occasional violent bust-up.

Can you kick a team mate on the training field and punch him in the dressing room?  You bet, there are hundreds of precedents for you.  You can certainly kick lumps out of an opponent, but what about doling out racial references in the middle of a game?

The use of a racist term in my office, and I’m sure your workplace, would lead to summary disciplinary procedures, but football has a way of looking at miscreants through rose tinted lenses.  The hoary old defence on these occasions, be if for footballers or anyone else, is ‘He’s not a racist, some of his best friends are….’.

This doesn’t matter.  The guilty party may be more rascal than racist but he needs to be treated in the same way anyone else using racist language in the workplace would be.  English football has done enormous work to combat racism since the 1980s but it’s in danger of undermining these efforts by accommodating people who should know better.

Mate, I think you’ve got your own (slightly weird, fanatical and misplaced) issues here, but I have absolutely no interest in arguing with you.

I apologise for name-calling, though – it was perhaps uncalled for.

Thanks for the nearly apology……by your logic if you get some abuse the only way to stop it is to chuck it…….don’t think so…..nothing weird or fanatical there……you make no sense other than way and hide under your big pillow in case anybody calls you names….merry Christmas….

my uncle ran away from home when he was 7 ..to see roy rogers and trigger in glasgow – must have been in the late 40′s early 50′s?

    ————————————

I would say between 1951 and 1953. I remember Roy Rogers and Trigger on the steps of the Central Hotel and I think my dad took me down to see them.

I asked my dad why Trigger had such a long face but he said all horses had long faces and in fact he was sure we were seeing Trigger happy.

(I made up the last bit but the rest is true)

    Football: More Than A Game

I could never support one club over the rest because of a trivial reason.

To discriminate in favour of Rangers required a valid motivation, and I had one; Rangers were the club of my community: the Protestant people of the west of Scotland.

I could never have sworn an allegiance to a football club because of a particular player or because it had been successful. To follow just one club while neglecting the rest needed a fundamental reason rather than a flippant attachment, and having been raised as a Protestant in the Glasgow area, the attraction of Rangers was inevitable and irresistible.

It’s a community loyalty; a cultural attachment, a sense of shared history, an understanding of identity and patriotic calling: it is a powerful tribal draw and sound reason for having an allegiance that will last a lifetime.

In the same city, another community has a tribal allegiance to Celtic: from its first moment, a club for Catholics.

A love of football attracts people to the game, but a love of football can often become secondary to a love of football clubs.

I grew up in an era when Celtic played the best football, but the prospect of going to Parkhead every week was a non-starter. I’d have been an alien and mostly unwanted presence in a place that I did not belong.

I went to Ibrox instead, a home from home: a place that I could feel at ease amongst people who broadly shared a similar background. ‘We’ were Rangers and Scotland. ‘They’ were Celtic.

That’s the attraction of football. It is real. It is the sport of the people, by the people and for the people, but it’s more than that; it is a means to exhibit political, geographical, cultural and even religious identity. The very idea that we should sing songs which are exclusively about football and footballers is preposterous and blindingly naive.

Football fans adore their Scottish, British, Irish, Ulster, Protestant, Catholic, unionist, nationalist, republican, royalist, Glaswegian, working-class, middle-class, Orange and Fenian labels.

We are different from them, and they are different from us. We are different because we want to be, and because we are.

The moment we declare an allegiance to just one club, we are guilty of discrimination. If we only loved football for what it is, it wouldn’t matter who won the game – but it does matter. Defeat can ruin a weekend and victory can exhilirate us for days and even weeks.

Anyone who believes that football is important simply because it’s good to play and fun to watch hasn’t been paying attention.

We love football, not just because it’s a great sport, but because it publicly defines who we are, what we stand for and what we believe.

Football reflects the society from which it comes, and that, as well as the beauty of the game itself, is what makes football special – and quite unique.

The football match is roleplay for different elements in society to go head to head, but confrontation is on the playing field, not the battleground.

Only a very foolish government indeed would choose to interfere in such a process.

What’s with the capital letter randomly placed in every few words ?…….that blog obviously took you ages to write , I think you should go for a wee lie down

Although , at a time when guys were posting jokes , you definitely brought some balance to the blog

  13. I haven’t read the blog today, only Pauls’s leader as ususal so not sure if this is off topic. I also have not posted since the Udinese game, where I posted in support of the banner.

Let me clear something up – I was inebriated after coming home from the watching the game and at that point knew nothing about the banner. All I knew was that Lennie’s young Lions had given, once again, a right good account of themselves and it was a right good game of fitba. I read some posts about the banner, tracked back to see what it was and thought – YEAH, they are right F them, F them all.

In the cold light of day, I seen this was foolish. It was not necessary and brought focus onto the club at a time when it wasn’t needed.

In saying that though, I can fully understand the sentiments.

Celtic PLC need to grow a pair and their negligence in doing so promotes angst in our support, particularly those who travel – that in it’s own right – should entitle them to their opinion.

We live in a KArazy world right now. Reading the blog yesterday I came across the link to the idiot, thug from kilwinning who attacked an innocent man for no reason and jumped on his head while his(the attacker’s) son watched. Unbeknown to the assailant the victims son witnessed this and stood up for his Dad – SURELY the right of ANY person.

To think the bhoy who defended his Dad, when seeing him beaten, in an unprovoked attack could face more serious charges than the attacker who attacked his Dad is an absolute mockery of justice, it really does beggar belief!

Surely surely, as human beings, we should be doing something about this.

Surely we should be doing something about the rising fuel costs?

Surely we should be doing something about the bank situation?

Surely we should be doing something about the recent upsurge in the promotion of gambling?

AND SURELY SURELY we shoould be doing something about the blatant advertising of legalised loan sharks like wonga and quick quid…….? Don’t you find it ironic the there has been a massive campaign, by these so called companies at christmas. Probably the most expensive and distressful time of year for many families, in the middle of what we are told is a double dip recession??

WHY OH WHY IS THIS ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?

I really wish I alone had the power to action those points.

What has this to do with a football blog you may ask?

Well, Celtic Football and Athletic Coy, in the inital set up would have been against this. I still hold true to those traditions and values. Equally to the traditions of not judging people due to race, colour, religion or creed.

The Ghuys who held that banner, quite simply, had had enough – and I do not believe they could have been more succinct if they tried.

We should never have faced that charge in the first place.

There are many clubs throughout Europe whose fans have been far more racist, fascist and political than we are, who have not been treated so harshly. The custodians of CF&AFC should have defended our bhoys and used set precedents as evidence.

What was our crime when reported by herr smith??? Singing the words of a perfectly legal, widely available song?? Now let me clear something up before we go any further, I do not condone the singing of PRO IRA add ons at Celtic park, I wish they would cease, and after self policing for 10 years or more, they, but for a few minor incidents have.

This song that we were reported for is NOT a pro IRA song – it is THE CELTIC SYMPHONY. In that song there is a rendition of “ooh aah up the ra” I would challenge any judge or jury, in any land, to clarify EXACTLY what is meant by that? There is no reference to the IRA anywhere in that song and…. (thanks to a fine CQN’r)… How could they be sure it was not in reference to the ancient egyptian sun god? Furthermore, the original version of that song was actually filmed at Celtic Park. If memory serves me right, the Wolfe Tone’s were actually singing that phrase as they walked / jogged out the tunnel….

I truly wish my fingers could type all that I want to write, quite simply, they cannot keep up!
