Rascal racism

710

Football’s impudent scamps have long caused more annoyance than actual harm to their clubs.  Many live by a different moral code to the rest of us which leads to all sorts of excesses, including the occasional violent bust-up.

Can you kick a team mate on the training field and punch him in the dressing room?  You bet, there are hundreds of precedents for you.  You can certainly kick lumps out of an opponent, but what about doling out racial references in the middle of a game?

The use of a racist term in my office, and I’m sure your workplace, would lead to summary disciplinary procedures, but football has a way of looking at miscreants through rose tinted lenses.  The hoary old defence on these occasions, be if for footballers or anyone else, is ‘He’s not a racist, some of his best friends are….’.

This doesn’t matter.  The guilty party may be more rascal than racist but he needs to be treated in the same way anyone else using racist language in the workplace would be.  English football has done enormous work to combat racism since the 1980s but it’s in danger of undermining these efforts by accommodating people who should know better.

  4. Hearts players are clearly fed up with not being paid – and who can blame them?

Whyte has been careful not to reach the same position, it seems. Other bills appear not to be paid timeously but, in the absence of anything to the contrary, it seems the players are being paid.

It’s all speculation, but I can’t help wondering how much the players are discussing the financial position of their club. OK, footballers are not exactly known for their cerebral qualities, but surely they have picked up that something is going on? They have agents and advisers after all. So what might Jelavic, for example, be thinking?

He must be aware of interest from England. Better football in a better league and a higher wage must be attractive, even without questions over the future of his current employer. OK, he can only leave if the club allows him to. but we all know that unhappy players find a way out if they really want it.

So does he look for a quick move or hang on and wait to see if he might become a free agent in some future liquidation? That would put him in a very strong bargaining position with any new emplyer.

    Good Morning,

As usual the run up to the Christmas period has proven to be completely manic meaning an enforced absence from these pages. Therefore, I have not been able to comment on such things as flares, banners, Victor Wanyama, Georgios Samaras or even the quest for Boyd– although on this last matter I would rather search for Spock.

The most serious matter of flares vexes me. Personally I stopped wearing them oh so many years ago, and so quite why Eufa should be concerned about such poor fashion sense is somewhat beyond me. Perhaps this is yet more evidence of the collective madness that takes a hold at this time of year?

Ah but I hear a protest–” It is not that kind of flair you eedgit– it is a FLARE– the big bell bottomed trouser of many a year ago was a FLAIR!”

    Oh I see.

Well, I wouldn’t be too vexed about a Flare at an Italian football match– ever. So Eufa should just move on. Then again, a long time ago around this time of year, Three wise men and a shephard or two saw a flare in the sky that lasted some considerable amount of time, and they followed it so to speak. Look where that got us?

On this day, in 1888, two men had an argument in the south of France. They were great friends but they had the most awful row and fell out completely. Their argument was about nothing of any great importance to be honest, but words were exchanged, tables upturned and violence threatened. In the end there was much remorse and angst about this fall out, and before the end of the day, one of these combatative protagonists had become so depressed about this row, that he cut off the lobe of his ear!!!

Perhaps the argument between Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh was just another example of December madness? Yet, it has been said that it was between this episode and his eventual death at the age of 37 in July 1990, that the great Vincent was at his most creative– although that did not prevent him from shooting himself and so terminating his creativity for good!

Equally, following a meeting in a church hall in Glasgow a month previously, a group of men set about clearing a piece of ground in the east end of the city with a view to creating a football pitch, a pavillion and a spectator area. They will have worked on a Dcember day like this, and probably the weather was none to kind. Maybe there was snow, bitter cold, or rain and sleet and so on. Not the best conditions to be clearing a derelict site and building a sports ground!

Yet, clear away they did. There is the suggestion that the area had been used for sports before, but even so, their endeavors are none the less impressive when you consider that the park and the pavillion etc was all ready for the inaugural game against the Rangers Swifts on 28th May the following year. Imagine a group of volunteers working at this time of year on a football ground for a team that did not exist? This too could be seen as December madness– after all this was something like the third attempt at setting up a team called “Celtic”– and clearly the other two attempts did not prove successful.

But this time, someone somewhere thought that whoever and whatever this team was going to be, they were going to be successful. However, I wonder what the passer by thought? What did the guy or woman in the street think when they saw these men working on a football pitch? How many thought that they were bonkers and bound for the asylum like poor oul Vincent? how amny thought that they were wasting their time and that their labour could be more gainfully employed doing something else? How many thought they should just go and get a proper job?I genuinely believe that many people of the day must have thought that the ” Celtic people” were “aff their heid!” and had no cenception of reality and proper priorities. To be fair it is a reasonable argument.

Perhaps they were just not prepared to listen to someone’s idea about this new football team and what it would mean and what it would bring.

Yet all these years later, the football club provides jobs to some 5,000 or so folk ( yip that is the number so I am told ), provides entertainment to tens if not hundreds of thousands and is the direct cause of a group pf people- many of whom have never met- being invited to a Hotel in Glasgow for a festive drink and to wish one another well at this time of year and in the spirit of Christmas– and all because they read and write about the team that became Celtic?

Unfortunately, I cannot be in attendance at that gathering but from a distance I will raise a glass to all those involved in the writing, the production and the reading of CQN Magazine.

If you had stood in what was Dalmarnock Street on 23rd December 1887 and told someone what would unfold from the efforts of those men clearing that site in the snow, you would have perhaps been diagnosed as being as mad as poor Vincent.

No one would take you seriously, they just would not listen.

    Perhaps they’ll listen now?

  12. Ten Men Won The League on

    From the BBC

Celtic left-back Emilio Izaguirre is ready to return after recovering fully from a broken ankle sustained against Aberdeen in August.

“He had 90 minutes in a bounce game on Tuesday and came through it fine,” said manager Neil Lennon.

“Emilio is a naturally fit boy anyway. He has had a traumatic injury but we are not going to pressure him.

“He is desperate to play. He’s been frustrated and there’s no doubt at times it’s been hard for him.”

Celtic are at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday, with Rangers to follow next Wednesday.

Izaguirre signed a contract extension until 2015 shortly after suffering his injury.

And Lennon believes the Honduran will quickly recapture the form that saw him named Scotland’s player of the year last season.

“He’ll be back and he’ll be better than he was before,” added the manager. “I don’t like making predictions, but he’ll be physically stronger and mentally stronger, too.

“He’s bursting a gut to be involved and there’s no doubt we’ll have to temper the expectations and apply the brakes. We’re talking with the medical staff all the time and we’ll use precaution.

“He’s had his family here with him and I think that’s helped. He had a wee break back home, but he’s just desperate to get back playing.

“We want to get him back to the way he was last season. We will be careful with him.”

Lennon insisted that even if Izaguirre does not feature against Kilmarnock, he will still consider him for the Old Firm derby.

Celtic’s last meeting with Killie saw the Glasgow side hit back from 3-0 down at half-time to earn a draw at Rugby Park.

“It’s a game which brings its own dangers but we want to make it eight wins in a row and go into the Rangers game on the 28th with a good mentality for that game,” said Lennon.

“It’s very important, just to maintain the run and keep the pressure up at the top of the table. I think the players are in buoyant mood at the minute without being complacent.”

The case involving Tixway, owned by Mr Whyte, is due to continue on a date to be fixed. Mr Whyte was cross examined by the other party’s QC. Mr Whyte told the court he could not remember, without paperwork in front of him, why he had been disqualified as a director. He was asked if it was for trading whilst insolvent. He could not answer.

Victor Wanyama flattered by Newcastle United interest

The Celtic midfielder is encouraged to be on the radar of a “big club” and says it is testament to his hard work.

Newcastle are said to have watched the 20-year-old as a possible replacement for Cheick Tiote in January and Wanyama is pleased to be on the radar of a “big club”…

  21. If the MBB is late with his NIC and VAT returns, surely the revenue would be down on him like a tonne of bricks? Companies that deduct NIC from employees but don’t pass it onto the Revenue are in effect stealing money from their employees and the Government at the same time!

It’s absolutely outrageous and I cannot see how HMRC could be anything but furious at such a scam. If they were lax about this then every company in the land would try it and the government finances would be in an even bigger mess than they are…

  22. Newcastle = a big club?

In terms of what? Big stadium, maybe… Big support? Not really, there’s not much else to do in Newcastle apart from getting roaring drunk so they tend to monopolise the local population as supporters.

Players/agents can have a bit of dirt on other players/management/owners that can be used as leverage to get moves. I’d imagine that any agent worth his salt would find all three (kinds of dirt) at that club rather quickly.

I really fancy us to batter them provided Victory plays in the holding midfield role. I think he is now central to this game. I would be prepared to throw a makeshift centre-half pairing together provided he is in front protecting them. If he plays there I can see us winning 3/4 nil as it would allow the rest of the midfielders to get forward.
