Rate card for Kent violence suggests 4 game ban

232

Alfredo Morelos apologised to Newco fans for his red card on Sunday.  The incident, which marked the troubled striker as the player sent off more times in a single season than anyone in the history of European football, may yet do him good.  The Mea Culpa moment and the weeks suspended from action will provide an opportunity to the player to get some help.

You and me have previously discussed how clever you need to be to be a footballer these days.  Now, it is not all about having brains in your feet, as it was in Charlie Nicholas’ days.  Footballers need to make hundreds of decisions in line with tactical plans each game.  They also need emotional intelligence to make the most of their talent.  Managers will only invest time in players who cannot learn for so long.  Gordon Strachan’s limit was telling a player something three times, after that, he moved on.

Of immediate concern is what the SFA Review Panel will do to Ryan Kent, Newco’s best player on Sunday, who delivered an upper cut to Scott Brown in the aftermath of James Forrest’s winning goal.  Punching off the ball is rare in the game.  Bilel Mohsni’s punch on Motherwell’s Lee Erwin in 2015 resulted in an additional three-match ban for “excessive misconduct” on top of a one game ban for the red card, and another three for totting up.  Kent is 22-years-old, a guiding ban at this stage of a fruitless season would not be the worst thing for the player.  The rate card indicates he should spend four games contemplating his violence.

  1. Fool Time Whistle on

There have been no media reports that accurately give the full account of the Brown/Morelos clash.

More importantly, no media source mentions the repeated & coordinated campaign by multiple opposition players to intimidate, provoke & antagonize Scott Brown.

From the very start, Scott had Arfield, Morelos, Jack & Kent trying to work him over so that he was either neutralized in footballing terms or he was provoked into reacting violently & so dismissed by the referee.

Gerrard’s odious post match tunnel interview makes it very clear to me that that campaign was part of their game plan to gain control of the midfield & the entire field.

In that interview, he disapproves of Morelos’s behaviour – but ONLY because in doing so he let his team & the fans down.

He does NOT say that what Morelos did was unacceptable on any level regardless of the provocation that he allegedly had to endure.

He was big on “I’ll deal with that internally” then promptly tells the world & the blue knuckledraggers precisely what he’s going to do. Another sop to these knuckledraggers in their support.

When asked if Ryan Kent was lucky not to be carded he says “Not really, like the Alfredo Morelos incident it came from being provoked by a player who likes to antagonize.”

He then tells us that Andy Halliday is “perfectly entitled to protect his people”. He means the fans being protected from that nasty Scott Brown who spent the whole game being targetted by his team & by those same fans themselves – Scott was 30 yards from the nearest fan.

Asked if Halliday’s red was deserved he says “Maybe, but only if the other guy is punished as well.” He means that Halliday acting like he’s a cop, a chief steward & Scott Brown’s own coach – all rolled into one then verbally & physically accosting Scott – is acceptable AND justifiable.

Provided that Gerrard can point to provocation in any way possible.

He then states that he’s been too lenient on players over indiscipline but that’s going to change “moving forward”.

You cannot fire players up & ask them to neutralize opponents by any means available, then complain that their own unlawful reactions were provoked by those same targets. Gerrard wants it both ways. What his players do & say is acceptable – until it’s not and then it’s not their fault anyway.

A bit like his own interview answers really.

Scott Brown refused to be provoked by Gerrard’s team in the way that they wanted.

Scott’s contained & re-directed response provoked Gerrard’s team to unlawful excess.

Gerrard then and since, has not yet stated that punches. elbows, kicks etc are unacceptable no matter the provocation. BUT, by implication, he’s saying that if you are caught & it damages the team then, and only then are you in the wrong & liable to internal discipline.

“We’ve hurt ourselves badly this season with a lack of discipline.”

He sees indiscipline only as something that impacts his team’s league position, but he has been the coach from the start of this season.

As bad as Newco have been in previous seasons were the ever so thuggish & indisciplined across the entire team? I know, I know, cue a litany of thuggish past players wearing blue…but seriously players who were previously just committed are now nutters – Halliday is a prime example.

Morelos has been a loose cannon all season & his red card count is no accident.

Ryan Jack should have had at least two yellow cards on Sunday but got none.

    Arfield was booked.

    Halliday got 2 yellows/one red.

Kent should have been sent off but got no cards – so far.

McCrorie should have seen yellow but didn’t.

McGregor’s street assaults on opponents seem to have stopped – under instruction from the coach?

Gerrard has been fed a load of nonsense by old schoolers within that club about how the mighty G*** initimidated all before them in the past. When you don’t have the skill you neutralize your opponents strengths in that area.

He & his staff have wound their players up for games against Celtic, but the irony is that they have lost games or dropped more points against weaker opponents.

Celtic have had a pretty tumultuous season and yet we’re 13 points ahead. We lost two of our three main strikers, our manager & coaches, missed out on CL qualification, scraped into the Europe last 16 and at times have had enough injuries to fill a complete team sheet.

Deflection is Gerrard’s response of choice – in tunnel interviews and in dealing with criticism of his performance as their manager.

Loved Scott Brown battering the ball into the net after Odsonne scores.

Loved Johnny Hayes pulling Ajer & others away from the linesman, referee & their players.

Loved seeing James Forrest run faster than Roadrunner to get into the box for both goals.

Loved seeing clearly in the second close-up footage that Morelos DID initiate the clash with Scott Brown.

Loved seeing Kris Ajer’s double fist pump cellie after stopping Worral from tapping into an empty net.

    McKellar and Watt……..Hmmmmmmm!

*The Link Men as midfielders were referred tae back then McKellar and Watt were well known link makers and referred tae wee ten thirty and Chopper who were our scorers that day.

I will ask you a wee poser, a game I took in August 1968.Wallace scored both goals at Ibrox. Why was the game a 3.30 kick off? No late April fools Day carry on.

*the ko was delayed due tae the black walk which was trolling along Paisley Road that day tae Bellahouston Park for their celebrations, I kid you not.

There was a cartoonist at the time called McCormick and had one in the paper that morning, in it a caricature of the Big Mhan was asked if he would be going tae the “walk”, his response was “aye the cake walk”.

And that’s what it was as we were 2 up early doors again, Jock made a major surprise selection with the Fife Becknebauer on the right wing with Jinky at inside right and the wee mhan made the first goal by running at the hun defence through the middle, their former Morton goalie saved at his feet but the ball broke too Wispy fired the ball home.

The second was a disaster for their greatest ever player who miscued a pass back to his keeper (seems tae have a habit of this when big George was on the right wing lol), the ball rolled towards goal past the stranded piece of Lurpack and Wispy again was allowed an easy tap in for 2-0. There were actually Celtic supporters that used tae say Willie never really tried against them lol.

If memory serves me well deidco unveiled a new strip that day, gone was the stuck in the past royal blue with a white v neck top and red and black socks and in came a lighter blue top with a round collar, red and white socks and for the first time an rfc badge on the top.

  8. Even before he joined Sevco, I never liked Gerrard.

He would completely lose it in big games like the Merseyside Derby or against Man U and get sent off for ridiculous studs up challenges.

He never had the grace or class in flukey victories either like in the 2005 CL final against AC Milan or the 2006 Cup Final against West Ham.

  9. Marco Rose is set to become the coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach or as we know them “A German Team”

NL has one foot in the door already.

Rose was an unlikely but popular choice. Unlikely we will see Benitez or Martinez either. Michael O’Neill and Steve Clarke have distanced themselves from the job.
