Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

  1. In terms of planning , am I right in saying that of the current 4 players who feature and CB, our pairing for the ECL (subject to any june activiity) is likely to be Erik Sviatchenko & Efe, as Boyo and Simu are likely to be at the Euros’ (either playing or in the squad) and will therefore be on hols when they start?

    “On a good pitch I think we’ll score a minimum of 5.”

IMO the only thing that will prevent Celtic from getting double figures will be professional compassion from the Celtic players.

I don’t believe that a modern pro-team would ever be pushing for a record-breaking 37-0 win, even if they were good enough (and the opposition far enough behind in terms of quality) to make that a realistic possibility. Most teams will get to 6 or 7 goals up and then take the foot right off the gas out of professional respect for their opponents. The Hamilton game was different because they are an SPL team, but even then Celtic eased off in the second half.

I’ll go for EK 0 Celtic 6 on this basis.

  3. Just my tuppence worth;

I don’t doubt that we have defensive frailties but I think the common denominator of the last 2 losses was the state of the pitches at Hampden and Pittodrie. It seems our style of play relies too heavily on an even playing surface. We need to find a different type of approach, be that personnel or tactics, when playing on cut up pitches. We try to play our expansive style when we should really be more robust and compact. Ronny needs to shake it up a little.

    1. Print off today’s article and put it on your wall.

    2. Read it every day.

I would not go expecting to see a cricket score against East Kilbride I remember when we played Whitehill Welfare at Easter road a few years ago and we won 0-3.I am sure we will beat East Kilbride but not by a huge margin. H.H.

Actions speak louder than words in my view, we need the players showing real heart and passion every week, this team goes a goal down to half decent opposition, it’s often game over.

I like Scott Brown as a player, I am not convinced on his ability to be a captain.

I am beginning to think we are putting to much emphasis on qualifying for the CL.We in my opinion should be trying to ensure we are the top team in Scotland and winning the treble that is difficult enough without worrying about the CL.H.H.

My support for the team hasn’t changed. My support for the manager as you can tell is faltering. I personally don’t think he has it in him. MY opinion doesn’t mean to say it’s correct. Time will tell. Hope he can sort it as he comes across a nice guy but sadly I think he can’t.

  22. Joe Fillipi

I don’t agree, they are in my view not mutually exclusive. A Celtic side should be capable of putting up a strong fight against teams like Maribor and Malmo to make the CL. If we can’t then winning the league is also likely to be difficult from next season onward.

Rest assured SevCo are watching us closely and are sensing the opportunity,

In a nutshell. Not that it really matters but I go every second week and while I’m there Celtic get my full vocal backing. Doesn’t mean I’m not going to go to the boozer or go on to a blog and discuss the merits of my team/manager with like minded Celtic folk. Everything in our garden is not rosy and it’s fine for us to talk about this. Our mental fragility worries me and this applies to the fans as well. At hampden, no one in my vicinity had any confidence in our ability to come back from 2-1 down.

You might well like Broonie’s post match reaction, but he was at fault for their first goal due to having no reaction to what was happening around him, again! Over a number of years Scott has been given the benefit of the doubt way too many times. Between injuries (quite a few self inflicted) and daft suspensions, he’s been posted missing for a lot of vital games. Add that to his lack of passing/goalscoring ability and I think he’s been found wanting. I don’t dislike Brown, but then I don’t dislike Lustig, Effe or Ronny either, just don’t think any of them are particularly doing the trick.

Andy Walker drew on all of his knowledge and experience of the Game and told David Tanner in the post-match analysis following the Aberdeen game that he (Tanner) would do as good a job as Ronny Deila.
