Commenting on following on from his predecessor Dr John Reid, chairman Ian Bankier, told a Celtic AGM he was not a man to deliver an insightful one-liner but Celtic’s Preliminary Results, released yesterday, are best summarised by the chairman delivering exactly, that, “This year demonstrated above all, the impact that football success brings to Celtic plc in its current shape”.

In short, there is no success, debt reduction, profit increasing, stadium improvement, squad development, retail or PR, without football success, those who suggest otherwise are overlooking the obvious.

These are wonderful financial results, delivered against an uncertain landscape when some, who should have known better, were delivering all kinds of alternative predictions for Celtic’s future, but there are cautionary tales within.

Any single event (in this case Champions League qualification) which can increase turnover by 47.7% is to be welcomed, but this is sport, where qualification cannot be guaranteed, no matter how many resources you commit to getting there.  We don’t have to look far to find the unedifying consequences of clubs who bet the tax money on getting to the Promised Land.  The challenge for Celtic is to fortify football operations every season without gambling recklessly.

In the year to 30 June 2012, when more season tickets were sold and we reached the Europa League group stage, turnover was £51.34m.  This is by no means a worst-case-scenario going forward, but it is a good budget starting point.  With operating expenses, including significant bonus and Champions League costs, coming in at £62.71m last season, our potential loss from failure to reach the Champions League is of the same order as our actual profit last year.  Any individual bad season would not wreck plans.

Like-for-like merchandising sales were up 29% on the previous year.  Celtic put this down to three elements: Champions League participation, improved retail performance, in particular at Glasgow Airport, and 125th Anniversary products.

It is likely that recent changes in the UK sports retail market has had a greater impact in Glasgow than any other UK city.  Sports Direct consumed JJB during the period and are now the overwhelmingly dominant sports retailer in the UK.  The firm’s owner is also one of the largest shareholders in a new Glasgow football team, who’s merchandising Sports Direct now operate.  I’m delighted Sports Direct own other local football brands but Mr Ashley will have discovered that you can’t ride two horses in this town.

In 2011 and 2012, with significant changes in Scottish football up for grabs, we debated the potential impact on our club.  Looking back on subsequent events it is clear to see that the arms race we were embroiled in for around a century was not good for Celtic, not good for any other Scottish club and not good for Scotland as a whole.  Football today is like a breath of fresh air compared to the way things used to be.

  4. Re summer football.

As our team mainly consists of internationals isnt there the possibility that half our squad could disappear for a month every 2 years.

Or should we only recruit from countries that will never make it to a World Cup or European championship.

This might not affect other teams in Scotland too much but it will definitely put us at a disadvantage.

I was at that game in 1967 at Hampden.

Back in the day when Morton had a team and a player called Preben Arentoft who went on to help Newcastle win the ole Inter Cities Fairs Cup.

    Fine midfielder.

    ——————————————–

Preben got married to a fine looking girl who’s family lived across the back from my Granny in Auchendores up the Port.

Back in early 80’s , Preben would bring the family every summer, and could be seen training every morning in the back garden with a regime that would have most people collapsing.

Very impressive man, very nice person.

His Kid, Preben junior, was years younger than most of us on the street, but what a player, great skills, dare I say it, and a few years before we knew it, a typical Laudrup type style of a player.

Prebens uncle , one T.Campbell esq, goes to Denmark most years, and told me the boy fondly remembers his holidays at his Maltese Grannies and Scottish Grandas home in the Port.

When international tournaments are on every 2nd summer the league would take a break during the competitions, like they do in Scandanavian countries. In addition we wouldn’t lose African players every 2nd year in January in the middle of the season

Could it be that Mr. Lawwell has been adhering to the exact same advice my dearest mammie drummed into me from an early age:

1- Work harder than your completion.

    2- Save your money.

3- Igone the opinions of others. Only you know what’s best for you.

4- Protect and care for those less fortunate than you.

    It’s quite simple really.

And yes, she was educated in a convent.

    Onwards and upwards.

  14. Di Canio was a class football player but I wouldn’t want him as manager. It’s nothing to do with his politics but, imo, he isn’t the full shilling (as we used to say in gentler times).

While the accounts are good news, and Im sure PL and the rest of the board are happy with the results, I cannot get my head round their collective attitude to what has gone on with oldco/newco, the whole scenario of their scheming which was exposed at a first tier tax tribunal the Nimmo Smith enqury with Celtic FC being the victim of their cheating leaves me feeling sick , this does not ease with us playing in the CL and being in a very good place at present.I support canamalar’s attempts to get answers here but Im sure the board of Celtic plc as a collective unit want this to go away, at the present time I cant feel part of the club and not sure I ever will in the future due to this inaction from the board.

  17. Just when I thought about going to the game tonight the missus informs me she’s meeting her pal for dinner so im having to stay in with baby hendrix.

Who said married life is bliss?

  18. I always thought DiCanio was a completely frustrating player because he often dribbled into dead ends , rarely passed the ball and never looked up.

    Not a team player.

‘Ball greedy’ we would have called him in the playground

Fabio Capello often used him as a sub and threw him on as a last resort calling him a ‘secret weapon’

” I don’t know what he will do so what chance have the opposition have”

When we showed interest in signing him from AC Milan Berlusconi sent his private jet to bring him back from their pre season tour in China

( that’s how desperate they were to get rid)

So although he had a lot of talent I do not think he was a talent.

However I know from many arguments with fellow Tims that I am in a very small minority

  19. Regarding new signings I have been very impressed with V V D, quality player who I believe will fill the void left by Paul Elliot all those years ago!! Derk (so far) looks no better than Steve Guppy, on Saturday he didn’t beat his man once ( and shat it with the header he should have buried!!) jury certainly out!! Pukki decent enough finisher by the looks off him however looks to prefer to play a bit deeper, looking promising enough though!! Fingers crossed lads!!

  24. Not long till off to the game, any thoughts on the team , with Morton struggling in their division should we go for 11 changes and give the fringe guys who have not played much plus the best u20s a run out resting the 1st team for Killie then Barca. Could risk loosing but i would be happy to see the young-ins get a chance in a competitive game.

  25. Bada Bing, You beat me to the punch. Tonight is one of the very few occasions when I will be almost totally out of the loop whilst a Celtic game is on. Hope Celtic First is online he is brilliant at keeping things going particularly when the blog isn’t busy.
