Commenting on following on from his predecessor Dr John Reid, chairman Ian Bankier, told a Celtic AGM he was not a man to deliver an insightful one-liner but Celtic’s Preliminary Results, released yesterday, are best summarised by the chairman delivering exactly, that, “This year demonstrated above all, the impact that football success brings to Celtic plc in its current shape”.

In short, there is no success, debt reduction, profit increasing, stadium improvement, squad development, retail or PR, without football success, those who suggest otherwise are overlooking the obvious.

These are wonderful financial results, delivered against an uncertain landscape when some, who should have known better, were delivering all kinds of alternative predictions for Celtic’s future, but there are cautionary tales within.

Any single event (in this case Champions League qualification) which can increase turnover by 47.7% is to be welcomed, but this is sport, where qualification cannot be guaranteed, no matter how many resources you commit to getting there.  We don’t have to look far to find the unedifying consequences of clubs who bet the tax money on getting to the Promised Land.  The challenge for Celtic is to fortify football operations every season without gambling recklessly.

In the year to 30 June 2012, when more season tickets were sold and we reached the Europa League group stage, turnover was £51.34m.  This is by no means a worst-case-scenario going forward, but it is a good budget starting point.  With operating expenses, including significant bonus and Champions League costs, coming in at £62.71m last season, our potential loss from failure to reach the Champions League is of the same order as our actual profit last year.  Any individual bad season would not wreck plans.

Like-for-like merchandising sales were up 29% on the previous year.  Celtic put this down to three elements: Champions League participation, improved retail performance, in particular at Glasgow Airport, and 125th Anniversary products.

It is likely that recent changes in the UK sports retail market has had a greater impact in Glasgow than any other UK city.  Sports Direct consumed JJB during the period and are now the overwhelmingly dominant sports retailer in the UK.  The firm’s owner is also one of the largest shareholders in a new Glasgow football team, who’s merchandising Sports Direct now operate.  I’m delighted Sports Direct own other local football brands but Mr Ashley will have discovered that you can’t ride two horses in this town.

In 2011 and 2012, with significant changes in Scottish football up for grabs, we debated the potential impact on our club.  Looking back on subsequent events it is clear to see that the arms race we were embroiled in for around a century was not good for Celtic, not good for any other Scottish club and not good for Scotland as a whole.  Football today is like a breath of fresh air compared to the way things used to be.

I do not know where you get your arguements from.I have never heard any poster on here say we should spend all our money.Never.Your “Lottery argument does not hold up.To win you must buy a ticket. We tried to win the “Lottery”without buying one.For anyone to say that we did not gamble this years CL qualification, after losing 3 top players, and not replacing them,is ridiculous.

Listen,I could argue till I was blue(God forbid)in the face.Waste of time.Your argument is”Do we want to end up like the hun”.How many times do we have to say”No”.But FFS do not gamble with CL qualification. We have bought Balde, and Pukki. Not cheap, about £4 million.None of them are proven strikers. What happens if the gamble on them fails?.We are back to square one.I would rather we had spent the money on ONE proven striker, maybe £1-2 million more, than hope Pukki does what he really has not done before. When the other transfer money is added next time,I dont think the extra spent on a proven striker would be noticed. And we most certainly would not be going down the hun route.

I can agree to an extent with what you have said but Puki could be a steal if he continues scoring the way he has already. He looks a good striker to me!

You could argue until you were blue in the nose but the argument would already be over.

Buying one more expensive striker would also be a gamble. And if the player got injured?

Don’t know why there are so many arguments about risk management when hindsight shows the risk management was spot on. You were wrong and that won’t change.

I have been a customer at Celtic Park and have paid for tradesmen to entertain me at that venue for near on half a century and never once has it crossed my mind as to what that mans political religious or sexual persuasion was. As long as he he tried his best for my team it didn’t matter to me. There are folk on here who could tell you the individual religions of each of the Lisbon Lions and are proud of it. As for away from the park I am unlikely to be inviting them round for dinner so as long as their views and actions don’t impinge on the good name of the club vote and have the beliefs that you want.

You may imagine that there is a special relationship between supporters and players but that is long consigned to the past Me and you now are just punters who pays their wages. Most of them would rather have a night in with their playstation rather than associating with supporters at some function or other. On the flip side it’s heartening how most of them don’t forget their socialist roots and love to redistribute their massive weath with those working class icons Armani Prada Rolex and Ferrari

A man’s personal beliefs are his own. I have no reason to suggest that he must have certain beliefs to play for Celtic.

They are very much his own personal opinion

When he flaunts them publicly,then-and only then-is it right that anyone should comment on them.

  15. from the BBC….

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell says the club are keen to explore safe-standing areas at their Parkhead ground.

The Scottish Premier League relaxed its rules on all-seater stadia in December 2011 to allow clubs to experiment with the modern standing areas which have been introduced in the Bundesliga among other places.

No club has followed through on trying out the likes of rail seats, which can be converted from standing to sitting areas for European games, but Celtic are now close to becoming the first.

I wonder what persuaded Zenit to state in, September, that they would bid £8m in January for a player they could have bought for £5m in August?

Sounds like the player’s agent or Heerenveen have planted this story. Their gamble to hold out for a bid of £5m may have backfired and they are setting the jungle drums going for January.

Still, it fooled TSD, though, but, as he thinks Tony Watt’s failures are Neil Lennon’s fault, he may not be the most reliable judge with which to share an opinion.

I always thought DiCanio was a completely frustrating player because he often dribbled into dead ends , rarely passed the ball and never looked up.

    Not a team player.

‘Ball greedy’ we would have called him in the playground

Fabio Capello often used him as a sub and threw him on as a last resort calling him a ‘secret weapon’

” I don’t know what he will do so what chance have the opposition have”

*sounds a bit like Mario Balotteli or dare I say it wee Jinky. I thought PDC was brilliant when he played for us and as TB said “he was born to play for Celtic”.

As for his politics wasn’t the captain of the 7-1 team allegedly an orangeman and how many of the Lions were goatshaggers, I know that one became an honorary member of his local ludge after Lisbon as it was mentioned in the Daily Express at the time.

  24. The union jack flag which represents England, Scotland, northern Ireland and wales now, may not be the appropriate flag to be displayed following 2014.

the union jack appears to have been adopted in large numbers by a sports group who have the same colours as the flag.

In order to encourage the disappearance of the union jack in Scotland, the flags that should be flown more frequently and in greater abundance would be those associated with a Scottish independence win.

So it appears that to see the union jack less we would have to vote for those flags usually displayed by the tartan army. Could it be that we could/should see saltyres at one end and BAs at the other?

  25. Heading up to Paradise. Would like to see Tom Rogic and Nir Biton in CM, with Anthony Stokes and Teemu Pukki up front. Adam and Derk supplying the ammo from either wing, and lots of goals.
