A BEAMING Brendan Rodgers welcomed £11million record buy Andre Engels to Celtic tonight.

The Belgian midfielder sealed his four-year contract as he quit Bundesliga outfit Augsburg for the champions.

Engels attracted the attention of the Hoops scouts with his impressive performances last season and he has also just been called up to the latest Belgian squad for the forthcoming Nations League games.

Rodgers, speaking to the club website, said: “We are delighted to bring Arne to Celtic. He is an exciting young player of real quality who has already made his mark at a really high level in the Bundesliga.

“He has a wide range of attributes which will allow him to play a number of positions in midfield, so we feel he is an excellent acquisition for the club.

“I think Arne’s style of play, his energy and his technical ability really will suit our game model.

“While Celtic will always be our priority, it is fantastic, too, that Arne is now receiving full international recognition within a top Belgian squad, something he is very deserving of.”

Engels arrives in the week that saw fans’ favourite Matt O’Riley head to Brighton in a record near-£30million switch.

Rodgers, who had already paid £3.5million for Paulo Bernardo from Benfica after the Portuguese playmaker’s convincing season-long loan, prioritised Engels to take the Denmark international’s place in his squad.

Now it remains to be seen if the stylish middle-of-the-park performer will be included in the manager’s pool for Sunday’s derby against Philippe Clement’s Ibrox side at Parkhead.

Earlier in the day, Rodgers welcomed centre-back Auston Trusty from Sheffield United after the American completed his £6million move.
